Does someone really leave a job and move across country for a $3000 increase? Thats $57 a week pay increase. after taxes about $40....I don't get it.

Excellent post ! The cost of taxes alone in that state will by far exceed the $3k figure not to mention the general cost of living.

Written on Marco Island Police and Fire Pension Trustees hold joint session:

in response to RayNetherwood:

No!! Marco Island needs to get out of the defined benefit pension Ponzi scheme ASAP.

The city needs to move to defined contribution plans, where each employee "owns" his or her retirement account, and where he/she and the city can make monthly/annual contributions. Existing pension funds should be distributed to employees/retirees in a proportional or "earned" manner.

States and municipalities need to get their fiscal houses in order, and open ended, pension plans with virtually unlimited liabilities is insanity.

This should be the city's stand, and the next round of contract talks (public service unions -- another abomination) this change should be negotiated.

If you take a look at the State Pension system you will find a very sound and well funded system the best in the Country. This can be done with proper management and oversight to keep politicians from tampering and borrowing from it.

One must believe that change will be forth comming.Like one of the poster's wrote these comments are 'not' your ordinary silly beefs they are serious.
Some people aquire power by hoarding the knowledge thus rendering themselves indespensable at least in their minds. The mistake is that is a very false sense of security as we see these people rotated out just like anyone else. The Chief does have a difficult job I just don't know how he has allowed this under current of anger to exist and create the large number of turn overs to go on.
Something needs to happen to reverse this condition asap.

So another exit and now another search? Something needs to happen in City Government that is good.To many commisioners to many opinions and interferance and we always end up back at the same place. Why not stop this Island silliness elect a strong Mayor and let a lot of these commisioners stay home and take care of their grass.
It really is embarrising now and citizen resistance and complaints are resinating.

Unfortunately a few of the past few posts are very direct and do point fingers and to say the least hang out some very soiled laundry. There is not to much doubt in my mind that the Manager has and will read these posts. This is a bad situation for so many good employee's and it should be shocking to those named and acted on by those in charge in a very expeditious manner.
No putting lipstick on this pig they need to move prior to the next sunset.

Written on Marco Island city manager hears from former police, fire and utilities employees:

in response to captnjimbo:

Basically this dialog has been informative. In the end I will bet that when Hunter came to town he did a major assessment of his department and set about an upgrading and it is not and has not gone down well with the rank and file...many of whom may have been too comfortable or had attitudes. Think back on some of the posts of the past few years. Hunter came with high marks, has been clean and outspoken on issues raised by the community. Personnel files may be guarded. New city manager wants to verify why the turnover...what's the problem? I don't have much contact with the police although I have asked for help from time to time and they have been accommodating. I do have eyes however and they seem to be doing a good job.

Capt I would say your right also. The Chief and the manager just need shake the place out a bit so the good officers are not troubled by the turn over which in that world is very 'Demoralizing'.If this manager is serious and not like the other that did the same thing they will get their answers as the problem is right there under their nose i am afraid. The other manager only did his interviews and played management games with the knowledge.
Many good cops there for sure and residents should stand with them.

August8 I agree. There are many people like myself who beat on the keyboards in anger. We do not live there full time yet. We want to be involved at least I do. I look forward to the day when I can represent the Citizens of Marco Island. Like myself, I know by reading these blogs that there are many like myself who have purchased our home in advance of retirement and are in a flux at the moment.

That is why myself and others are concerened for the future of Marco Island.

I would agree with you about giving preference to other Florida Officers, I do not agree with the two pention gig. I believe in working your way up from the bottom in a good work enviorment, and staying for a long stretch.

Lets face it, we all bought there due to nice living, clean neighborhoods and low crime. We want, need and deserve to protect that quality of life for all Marco Island residents.

You know MRBreeze, something good comes out of these posts for sure. You and I used to bust each other's chops and that was fun but seeing you as a caring and hard working citizen that is doing all he can do is much better.
There will always be problems in a little government like this and when you get here full time you can roll up your sleeves and make a differance. We don't have to agree and all things but I would say to you that Marco is an expensive life style no doubt but when it comes to public safty I do know that the police are excellent.Look at how tranparent the problems are for all to see, that should tell you something based on what we get from our great Federal Government these days.
Now, don't let yourself get to angry as that may reduce the number of years you will have to enjoy this place on a full time basis.Good luck and very good speaking to you like this !

When will Marco Island finally have enough? This is embarrassing for the island.

The best the great city of Marco Island can provide is this dysfunctional, at best, police department?

What were the disciplinary problems? Why was the public not notified? Were the officers arrested and/ or will they face charges?

What is the status of police related litigation? Just more $$$ wasted.

This craziness needs to end. Hold your elected officials accountable. Hopefully the new city manager wakes up and smells the coffee- soon.

Most of the officers at Marco Island are competent valued City Employees. What is being discussed for all citizens to read and observe is dealing with a portion of the Department that has continually represented a managerial issue.
Disciplinary issues and investigations are not public information until complete. No reason for anyone to know why a person chooses to resign unless that person chooses to speak about it.
The majority of your post reads like non=sense, sorry?

Written on Marco Island city manager hears from former police, fire and utilities employees:

in response to MrBreeze:

August8 I agree, I want a Police Department that I can be proud of not ashamed of. I want to see real police work not doughnut eaters that are so out of shape they could not catch there breath norless the bad guy. I want a Police presence on the beach 24/7 which I do not see now. I want to see bike and foot patrols in the neighborhoods to show Police presense. I want to see full time career dedicated professionals not lazy retired bums from other locations. I have not seen this for the 25 years I have visited Marco Island nor the 14 years I have been a property owner.

I want to be proud, but when will it happen? How can it happen? How long is too long?

MrBreeze every idea you stated I also agree with and if that is what residents want that's what they should get.My question to you is are you an active participant in City Government and if not, why not? Citizens like yourself by taking the time and behaving in a reasonable manner can greatly influence how things are done especially at a moment like this so I say c'mon, let's push those ideas.
As for who they hire and how out of shape they are I can't speak to at this time.I am a strong proponet of an officer's appearance and phisical condition without exception a hireing quality. A man that takes pride in himself will more often than not take pride in his duties, so I agree.
I do not agree with those you refer to as old retiree's, if hired and screened properly they are the biggest value the City can possible get.Sound prior Law Enforcement Experience and a good record saves the City tons on training and orientation that is a State Requirement.I do think they should favor retired Florida Officers first for reasons that are to numorous to list.In any case these can be the most experience the City can put on the street in the shortest amount of time. In most cases they are the more mature and ready to listen when good citizens like yourseff need their ear. But, they should be in sharpe in every regard.
Get involved MrBreeze I can see where you can contribute and the Chief and New Manager will listen I am sure.

Written on Marco Island city manager hears from former police, fire and utilities employees:

I believe Marco Island has absolutly the best Chief they could ever have hoped for.If the Chief were to seek advice having served so long in a much larger agency I would let him know that management rules are quite differant in a small Department like Marco Island. Those prior to him have attempted practices that inspite of their best efforts failed to provide them with the desired results. You must be a very hands on administrator and be especially cautious how much is delegated to all subordinates. The Chief of Police must be like many of the officers and be there on all shifts and activly participate in the daily and nightly activities of those he wishes to motivate and inspire an exhausting proposition at best.Throwing names around is not the best thing but focus on long standing and traditional supervisory techniques and attitudes is an excellent place to begin.Obviously there is good in everyone but there comes a time that change and some reorganization is needed and could serve as a first step in moving in a new direction.
There is absolutely 'no' reason for a Department of this size to have that many disciplinary exits in that short of a time frame. This problem screams of either poor selection or worse yet lousy supervision which unfortunately extends right to the top.
This is a difficult and challenging postion for any Police Chief but the only way to get a grasp is be there, participate watch and listen and make corrections as warranted and hopefully prior to disciplinary issues developeing.
Finally, most good citizens of Marco Island do want a Police Department they can come to and be proud of and this can be done by working closely with those that are brought on board to execute that outcome.Marco Island is normally a quite and crime free community which is the objective and desired result of this good Department but everyone should always be keenly aware that in this world that can change with just one click of the police radio.
Good luck to everone .

Get rid of the retired "mooches" who for six years in the sun get another pention. Hire people who want to be there long term not just calender day counting.

MIPD needs to go. Sheriff needs to take over Marco Island. Time for community Police including beach patrol, not just driving up and down the beach either. That means getting out on foot like real cops used to.

Local patrol in the neighborhoods, and surrounding areas. The island is small, easy to cover bring back simple ways and save the taxpayer money produce better services. Cut out the fat.

Things have changed MrBreeze and the days of looking back are over. These are problems that can and will be fixed if management is serious and all citizens will be proud of their Police Department.I think it's great that all the citizen's are aware of their existance.

Written on Marco Island city manager hears from former police, fire and utilities employees:

I would doubt seriously if this has anything at all to do with the current Chief or his policy and personal style but no doubt he will have to accept responsibility if the information that may be revealed has a negative management concern any place in the Department. This has been happening long before the current Chief arrived and long before a retirement plan was ever concieved of.It will be interesting to see what the manager learns as prior manager's have done the same thing and not acted or failed to accept the information they were provided. As a suggestion just confide in those current employee's that have worked there the longest that is where he can get his best feed back if he protects them if they speak up.
There is a long standing culture of this issue that every Chief has delt with during their tenure.Likely, many problems and answers are simple and right under their nose and the Chief must be very involved in all aspests of the department to see potential problems that may be present ?You have good hiring pracices and the right people are brought on board then you must treat them in a manner consistant with that understanding.Enforcement is fine and should have a place but citizen and police relations that mature officer's and sensible enforcement policy bring are far more important than volume and demands.By no means is this an excuse for the plain lazy.'All' of management must be seen as fair and politics and favoritism must not exist in a police department if turn over is to be avoided.
This manager's honesty and credability with these important issues are at stake now that he has opened this door.
Let's see.

Since then the market has recovered, the economy is growing slowly, gas prices have come down, and as PARADISELOST said; people have reinvented themselves to adjust to the "new normal" of internet opportunities.

Other then that: Under every administration; CHIT HAPPENS (ie. benghazi, irs)

With that aside; the only thing left is Obamacare; which is really nothing more than an experiment to help the poor.

Americans will adjust to it no matter how it turns out; just as we adjusted to everything else.

All-in-all; considering N. Korea, the Russians, dealing with the Chinese, Iran, Syria, Egypt, Alkida, the Economy, Israel, and American social issues;

Written on U.S. unemployment rate falls to five-year low of 7 percent:

in response to panola60:

The Labor Force Participation Rate dropped by 0.2 percentage points in this two-month period, meaning 666,400 fewer people were in the labor force in November than in September, roughly the equivalent of an entire congressional district.

10 million fewer working age people are working today than when Obama took office and if they were added back into the unemployment equation then unemployment would easily top 12%. Under Obama 3 out of 4 jobs created have been part-time jobs because of Obamacare. Normally 3 out of 4 jobs created are full-time jobs.

To make matters worse Obama is attempting to add another 30 million new immigrant workers to the labor force to take even more of our jobs and further depress wages.

Obama proved he discourages people from being employed, self-sufficient and successful when his Administration opposed food stamp recipients from seeking employment so that millions of families on welfare will no longer be engaged in job preparation activities to help them re-enter the workforce and become self-sufficient. This has resulted in the number of able-bodied adults without children on food stamps to double in just 1 year, increasing from 1.7 million people in 2009 to 3.9 million in 2010.

You are far to smart to share your views here, lol

Written on Obama: Income inequality a defining challenge :

Boy! You guys have been drinking the kool-aid way too long. It's affected your brain cells. By raising the minimum wage, prices will increase, which means that we (you, me, and all the working public) will be paying more so that those minimum wage people can earn more. But, they will also have to pay out more to maintain the same economic position. Minimum wage jobs like Micky-D's are not intended to support families; they are only meant to supplement families, and for people just starting out. Most of them are part time or second jobs for high school and college kids, who don't have families. Or for people already drawing social security (that they paid for out of their wages, over the course of their lifetimes), who want or need to supplement their income. The other large pool of minimum wage employees are those just starting out in the work force. The normal transition is that you start out with minimum wage jobs, and as your experience and education increases, you move up to other, better paying jobs. Raising the minimum wage is like negotiating higher salaries and benefits for union contracts - they both serve to drive up the prices of all consumer goods, which means that we all must pay higher prices to maintain the same level of living that we currently have.

Do you really expect this guy to understand what you pointed out if he does not already?

That is the right political way. This President is for the Americans not for some lobbyists. Any smart thinking American has to support him. His spot in history is fixed. No doubt about that. And the facts are on his side.

It is has become more difficult for Americans to rise socially. This is in countries such as Canada, Germany or France easier. Great President Barack Obama quoted Pope Francis (not my leader), who in the past week with his Apostolic Letter "the joy of the Gospel" had criticized the global capitalism!!!!! Specially addressed Marco Island and the Marriott project. Francis had written that it was "incredibly that there is no sensation when an old man, forced to live on the streets, freezes, while a decline to two points on the stock exchange makes headlines".

Great President Barack Obama said, in view of the political stalemates in the Congress was not to be expected that the problems of inequality in this or next year will be able to be solved. However, great President Barack Obama would continue to fight his economic policy ideas.
Good so! Great ideas for the American people. I am happy with this President.
