in response to LEHonig: Hascle asked why we can't build the Smokehouse Bay bridges for an amount per foot closer to the cost per foot of the Jolley Bridge. There are many reasons, and probably some I don't know. Here's a partial list: 1. The Jolley Bridge was "design-build," a construction approach in which one entity takes the project from design to completion. It's often cheaper than the way Smokehouse is being done ("design-bid-build"), a construction approach in which the payer (that's us on Marco, for Smokehouse) wants to control the design and all its elements. So we did all the design (and paid for it), and now a contractor will have to bid on building to that spec. (Recall that Smokehouse's design was put to the citizens to vote, and the citizens did not choose a bare-bones design.) 2. The Jolley Bridge didn't have to be done in a big hurry. We already had a bridge, and the traffic disruption was minimal. Smokehouse will be a whole different animal. Essentially it will be the construction of one bridge at a time, with traffic diverted to one lane on each bridge as the other bridge is constructed. 3. For the Jolley Bridge, we didn't have to rebuild seawalls and construct elaborate pedestrian pathways and so forth. 4. Big projects and little projects alike have to be prepped and staged and the contractor has to amass the equipment and materials and labor and plan each day and each step. If those costs can be spread out over a lot of work (in this case, a long span for the Jolley Bridge), then the per-foot cost can be reduced. 5. The economy probably played a role. Maybe when Jolley was put to bid, builders were hungry.

Thank you.

I am hoping Larry Honig will answer.
in response to 26yearsonmarco: Thank you Commissioner Honig and Marcofriend for the information. Based on what I see, the T.Y. Lin design provides the highest bridge at the lowest cost, and should be used as a basis for the bidding process. I also wonder how much the elimination of the Arch would do to reduce the cost, unless it’s a structural component. I assume the Contractor for the Jolly Bridge will bid on Smokehouse.

Why cant we build for $16,000 a foot similar to the Jolly Bridge as apposed to $41,000 per foot?
in response to LEHonig: Hello marcofriend, I wasn't comparing the bridges. I was responding to a request from a similarly anonymous writer asking for some figures. I provided them. Comparisons are up to you.

Was the contracter who built the Jolly Bridge consultated about the Smokehouse Bay bridge? They were around the Island long enough to take a good look at the project and maybe even a bid with similar pricing.
in response to mhs513: Mr. Honecker, that doesn't solve the parking problem, not even close. Some planner you are.

Our beach is like a great movie or concert. There are only so many seats, then it's full. It is important on a beautiful beach day to forget the chores list. Wake up and get to the beach in the early morning to get a good parking spot and take in some healthy sun.
It is positive to see the council thinking about and debating very important issues. The rating systems used to judge this bridge seem to come in different forms. It is very difficult for me to understand just how bad the bridge is and who said so. Can somebody please try to simplify it for me and the citizens of Marco Island.
in response to ajm3s: From my expectations regardless of interpretation, I thought this meeting was advertized as a discussion of the likelihood of moving forward under a host of options which I thought included NO expansion, which would be placed on a referendum as Mr. Honecker, Mr. Patricca, Mr. Sacher and Mr. Batte all expressed in campaign or public forums. I was hoping for a robust discussion not a commitment or motion to get into the details of a contract for an expansion, when 4 sitting council members voiced their support of a referendum that I thought was a basic yes/no for spending x amount of dollars of any expansion. What is really interesting, I believe the call for a referendum was citizen initiated, yet the discussion at that meeting was "to move the ball forward". Well lets move the ball forward and simply ask if the folks want to expand the community center. Period... and let them cast a vote for or against capital expansion. But as Hascle has stated, "it is a done deal" and that is NOT what 4 council members agreed to unless they have changed their position. So lets ask them to comment publicly because I did not hear a single word regard8hg a referendum! Or maybe I do not understand this council procedure and we must have a detailed contract to vote on rather than a basic yes/no for expansion, or other options that were discussed.

I can't wait to use the new and upgraded facility.
in response to soundman: the elevated blood pressure for those who completely misunderstood coucilor honig is very revealing. he and magel and keister clearly stated the entire future of the Mackle Center had to pass 2 critical votes first the wording of the contract and the approval of money to pay for it. I believe they only wanted to have the city attorney review the proposed construction contract which would be brought back at a council meeting fully advertised for public input.the Public Referendum issue is interesting considering council is about to spend much more than the Mackle center on the Smokehouse Bridge without a referendum.

That is the way I interpreted the meeting.
It's a done deal. The objections were mainly because it was not advertised for a vote only discussion as well as the finance terms need to be put foward. I was 100 percent against the center at first. The project will move foward soon. I will support it all the way.
The picture in the paper depicts one of our residents rambling on as usual at the meetings.
We could have Stan and Stef from Rotary as vice mayor!

Yes for the CRA king Steve Thompson.
Get rid of the city manger position.
Bring back Moss and Rienke ASAP.
Rookie drinker, keep him out of here. We party hard here in Marco, however we keep our hands to ourselves.
There are many good kids out there. The newspapers always seem to report the bad ones.
They should put in the water.
Either Stef or Dana will do. The damage is already done.
They are fukking all off us.
Freedom, freedom for Richie at last. I was lucky enough to see him perform a few times in small settings.
Revoke his firearm privalage ASAP.
Nobody is happy with the way the medians are being maintained except the contracter. The committee realizes something is not right, however the manger is tying their hands.
The fees paid by the vendors make the city enough money to pay for whatever police might be needed to create a safe farmers market. Any use of the park by others comes with a fee to ay for police and fire and plenty of them.
It is time for a Bar Rescue at Porky'.

The question is the motor voter rule. It allows persons applying for a drivers licience to register to vote without proper documentation. If they answer the question yes, they are registered to vote. You,as I suspected are a dumb sh-t
This is a frikin joke.Anybody seeking voters rights should provide documentation without question. This country and its ridiculous leaders are turning our country into a sh-t hole.
It's a sonic boom. We are near the path of the training run from the south up to Avon Park bombing range.
They will be gone soon. Some of our northern guests feel sense of intiltlement. If they would only just send their money and stay home
I want Jane on my team anytime.
Even the dumbest crook knows the sound of a shotgun being racked and loaded to fire. If you enter my home unlawfully it could be a one way ticket from paradise.
Take out Klaus and we can get rid of all the guns along with the town idiot.
MICA is supreme leader here in Marco. Just try your luck and see what happens. I have been there and lost.
MICA is loaded with cash from members. They keep it on hand just for this reason. The builder/owners should expect a minimum of a 250,000 dollar battle just for starters. It is much easier even at this point to review the documents. MICA would loose precidense in the future if they do not fight and win.

Buy A pass you cheap a--.
Big mistake playing with MICA. They will fight to the end to protect the deed restrictions.Their membership has a history of sending in extra funds if needed to protect the restrictions.
If Hitler,I ment Hiller has a plan,it can not be any good. She is a nasty and malious person.
We put Rob. It won't work. They government will never be able to take away cigarettes, alcohol or guns. I do hope they would take away a couple of women. First would be Hilary Clinton next would be Georgia Hiller.
It's time to take the Strummers and Marco big band out of the mix and give some new talent a chance. No electronic machines should be allowed to reproduce or add to the music. Let's remember there are younger people that do live here. The middle school and high school have outstanding musicians as well.
It's about time a change was made. Some term limits might have helped keep the board fresh and on course.
I think we need to relax and see what really happens. Our community is very resilient and loaded with great folks from many different community service organizations. They will step in if and when the need arises. Please stop spending your money with organizations with large overhead, especially with the management. It is easy to find something local that really needs help.
Eat shrimp, less waste, not so much shell.
I would hope that individuals that legally possess firearms make every attempt to keep the firearms in a secure location. It seems to me that this terrible incident could have been prevented,if the weapons were out of reach of the assailant. It appears that the young man was not able to go to school on a normal basis, and act correctly around other people. He was diagnosed with an illness and better care needed to be taken to make every attempt to keep a good watch on him. The real thing I am trying to say without being too harsh is a big mistake was made not keeping the guns locked up.
This is a constant problem and needs to be looked into by the new council members.
You have go to be kidding.
You can't even breath the air here in Marco Island with less than 100,000 dollars per year in income and that is without a mortgage. The taxes and insurance and water remain a constant and large fixed expense
Had a really good lunch the other day. It still has a nice Tiki Bar feel to it. It was getting a little shabby at best. The bar now offers a great view of the water. The idea before that the servers were allowed to besmoking constantly during their shift was not good for me. We leave that for Goodland.
They should have hired the stone crabbers to use him as bait a long time ago
