SUNNYCITY: The people who are seeking change are not minorities in the neighborhoods they live in. Laws and regulations are written to control the members of our society that never learned how to behave. Fortunately for civilization they are the minority.
SRELCARAJO: Sometimes the truth is hard to take, but to say that an accurate portrayal of a period of time is stating the negative, is ludicrous. Newspapers have a responsiblity to be complete and accurate in their reporting. After all, the printed published word of a good journal does serve to document forever what actually happened. Rarely do I see balance or any attempt to verify statments of government or political officials. Nor do I see any attempt to seek or pursue clarification from sources as to the quotes the reporter uses to hang her story on. A serious reporter writing in a small home town journal should use the opportunity to sharpen their journalistic, interview and investigative skills. It should not be a period in which one is lazy and simply parrots the words and thoughts of her subjects. Perhaps the days of real investigative journalism gone forever.
Yes, it actually happened. The individual is a supporter of Mr. Popoff and I'm sure he will be happy to give you his name.
RACHAEL: A minority must be vocal or they will never be represented. Successful democracies are successful because they give their minorities equal consideration. If they do not they suffer controversy and turmoil. Even though our country protects our minorities with it's Constitution and our Bill of Rights, our country has had to learn this lesson over and over again. The majority will always try and take advantage of the minority simply because it is a minority. Mr. Tucker is an attorney and knows this to be true. I am so sorry that you are so tired of hearing my "negative bantor". I won't stop. Mr. Tucker served as an elected official in our City and I will not stand by and allow this newspaper to whitewash his record of service. Many of our citizen's believe he still has many things to answer for. My entry above simply outlines those that I'm concerned with. The truth is that this man's legacy is not all good and without controversy. Our very nation was founded by a minority that believed they were being abused by a majority. It's my right and privilege as an American citizen to let my elected officials know when I believe I am being taken advantage of. 3,000 single family home owners on Marco Island voted in the last election as a minority and lost. Although we will ALL support those who gained office, each of us have the right to complain or "banter". That's the difference between a democracy and an autocracy, despotism, a dictatorship, a monarchy, totalitarianism or tyranny. Get used to it, you live in the United States of America not Cuba.
If Mr. Popoff is fearful of unbalanced people in our community, then I would first look at a fellow who came to the podium and announced he was licensed to "carry" and not afraid to use his weapon. As I recall, this event occured during a meeting when the Chief of Police was present and the fellow wasn't apprehended. Sent a chill up my spine.
Joey, why not have meetings at 10:00 am on Sunday morning? That would ensure adequate shade from public oversight. Think of all the personal agenda items that could be passed with little or no debate.
People of superior intelligence are frequently assaulted by those who are less bright. This article brings to mind the bully in the fourth grade that used to flick spit-balls at the nerds that always had the "right" answers. The only people who whould find enjoyment in such a piece are those who share Mr. Farmer's obvious intellectual inadeqacies and propensity to act out like a bully would. If this article is referring to Mr. Foster, then I think it likely is personal and should never have been approved to be printed as a column in this newspaper. It is common knowledge on Marco Island that Mr. Foster has been a frequent critic of Mr. Farmer's use of this paper, to champion his support, for the current political power base in Marco Island. Mr. Farmer should write to something he has some understanding of and leave the measure of intelligence to others.
He takes pride in falsly accusing citizens of dumping tons of asbestos on Collier Blvd? He takes pride that he did nothing to effect it's clean-up? He takes pride in admitting he deleted written communications from citizens thus ignoring the sprit of our Sunshine laws? He takes pride in frequently and disrespectfully barking at the only woman on our Council? He takes pride in not sharing and allowing our citizens to benefit from the "new information" that convinced him sewering the island was the "right" thing to do? Which directly led to another two years of turmoil in our community. He takes pride in being one of the first Councilmembers of this City to suffer a recall effort (by 2,000 citizens)? HOGWASH! Tucker's initial instinct was correct, he should have resigned. Unfortunately, he fell asleep again as he was prone to do and forgot why he had that thought.
SRELCARAJO, after reading your comment, I finally understood that you had mistakenly referred to the wrong writers. I wonder, do you think your "weed' comment more accurately reflects your comprehensive thought processes? Better get some help before you do something serious to harm yourself.
Popoff sounds scared to me. What a putz. By the way, several mailboxes were destroyed on my street by the contractors building a sewer. I wonder if I should be concerned about that?
dbouff, Beowulf is correct. This fellow Minozzi is about to start another firestorm on Marco Island and it will not be limited to home owners. Just because Minozzi wants something does not give him the right, to obligate thousands of people to pay for it. If you believe the bridge is necessary, then tell us why. The government obviously isn't being very transparent here.
cashmere, it matters not who owns property where. Time has now passed, the City Council has received the presentation and they have decided on this issue. It seems that your assertion that the dock plans are far more extensive than what exists are untrue. I and more than one hundred other attendees at the meeting examined the drawings and the overlays clearly showed that fewer slips were going to be built. This will be a very good project and will enhance property values for the entire shoreline of Clam Bay. You should thank the residents of South Seas for being such good neighbors. They did this right and crossed all their t's.
lauralbi1, how do you know what Mr. Tucker and Ms. DiSciullo deleted? Unless you have access to their hard drives and have used the the same recovery software that Keister's hard drive was subjected to, you know nothing. At least Ed Foster has eividence that he wrote and sent emails to these elected officials. Since those emails are no longer available in public records, he asks only: what happened to them? Everything you say is without foundation. What's the matter with you?
It is noteworthy that this crowd was NOT anti-sewer. They, however acted exactly like the anti-sewer crowd in that they booed when displeased and applauded when pleased. Will we not hear some highminded comments about maintaing civilty and decorum in Council Chambers? Or is that only reserved for those who live in individual family homes?
Patton1, you are clearly part of the problem.
Hate is a festering wound that seeps puss until it consumes the hater. Instead of responding to Mr. Columbo, the three writers above should be meeting with their new Council members to discuss ways to bring our city together again. Mr. Kiester is the only Council member to pay for a crime committed by several other members who remain unpunished. Marco politics has suffered from sunshine violations for the past 8 years. As Mr. Kiester stated previously, his actions and resulting ordeal, should be used as a lesson for all current and future council members. Let's move forward and deal with the now.
The Jolley bridge has a rating of 81. That means that it has an expected useful life span of 20 to 40 years. At least that is what the facilitator told the participants at a focus group that was sponsored by Collier County. If you don't believe me, ask Counciman elect Waldack, I understand he was a participant. Who are we to believe? Someone named "lovemarco" with an agenda or an engineer paid for by the County?
What the hell kind of Democracy ignores it's minority members? Lauralbi1, you need some civic lessons.
Another hateful comment from one of those who profess love for our community. Stop the crap and and offer positive solutions to our problems or leave.
More hate from the hate monger.
Is this $2,700, a reference to the road resurfacing charge? If so, why wasn't the resurfacing of our roads in the budget like it is in every other city's budget? As for the commercial interests and condo owners assisting those being forced to join them without any justification in the sewer, why are the new users being charged a disproportionate sum to completly replace the sewer plant? At one point the city actually claimed this was not so. Not anymore they don't. The plant is all brand new technology and guess who is making it all possible for the commercial interests and condo owners? That's right, the 3,000 single family homeonwners that you had to include in the system or the condo owners and commercial folks would have revolted at the cost. That said, I agree with happyonmarco. The majority have voted and for whatever their reasons, they agreed that the minority should pay. So we will. Elected offcials must become statesman like and stop arguing with their citizens. It's time to move forward. I just hope you have the wisdom to avoid controversy by seeking concensus before you impose such a high cost on a minority group again.
Ed, it's like when they "anoint" someone. First a lawyer is selected by the elite to run for a judicial vacancy, then they "anoint" the lawyer, so that they somehow become wise and forever beholding to those who made it possible. CC elects it's judges making them political animals. This is why a jury trial needs to be requested if you want a chance at justice. A jury trial however, won't help you if you are filing a suit against a governing body like a City or a wealthy commercial interest that contributes to the election process. This is because they can always appeal a jury verdict up thru the elected appellate Court Justices and again to the the "elected" members of the Florida Supreme Court (who have received a double dose of "wisdom"). That court is where citizens cannot prevail unless it the issue is clearly unconstitutional or one that the populace has a strong interest in.
More hate by haters. The election was not about the POPs Petition. This letter is not about the POPs organization. What was it about POPS that was NOT peaceful? This is about Mr. Waldack agreeing to do something (in front of witnesses at a political forum), to bring Marco Island back together again. This is about Mr. Waldack refusing to follow up with a committment, by apologizing for the spreading of a lie. A lie that he acknowledged. This is about someone's character, but certainly not Mr. Columbo's. It is reminiscent of Councilman Popoff's behavior during the last election. Where do you find these people?
I see that some in our city still enjoy being their old hateful selves.
Hate is all consuming isn't it? For the good of your family and for your well being, seek out some help before you do something you may regret.
Neutral, MarcoFacts never reads an entire entry. He reads the first few words, anticipates what is being communicated and then writes an unrelated bullet. He and many of these other posts are really the same fellow writing under different monikers. The audience you are speaking to numbers maybe 3 different writers. You are wasting your time responding to this guy.
Neutral, don't waste your time. You are arguing with one fellow here. He uses several names but it's the same guy.
Looks like Gibson has his work cut out for him. The majority of his supporters do not appear to be "positive" about winning. Seems being hateful is too much fun. Leroy, 27year, trotw, patton and avenger I guess you didn't hear Totter when he said we must work to bring this island back together again. Which group is being the most hateful in the posts above? Winning is the easy part, now you must live what you promoted and that looks like it will take a real change of personality.
Tell me lauralbi1, what is it Recter is going to do for us? I know he is going to bring some kids to the meetings and that he will finish the sewer, but what is he going to do for us, the residents of the neighborhoods, the taxpayers and the property owners?
Marcogirl, you sound so full of hate and spite. Why don't you try promoting your candidates by telling us what it is they will do for us. What are their plans and vision for Marco Island? You get a lot more with sugar and honey then vinigar.
OldMarcoMan, how come you can take utility money and pay for road resurfacing? Or how about taking a utility fee collected for the purpose of putting neighborhood power lines underground may be used to buy light polls for Collier Blvd? Seems like our city makes rules as to suit what they want. As for your other comments, referring to the park, I don't know what you are referring to. Perhaps that Veteran's park should have been developled prior to Collier Blvd, or maybe our bridges should have been repaired and replaced prior to Collier Blvd?
Just wait a few weeks. The trucks and equipment and traffic jams are coming back! Seems they have a six month or so job on a bridge that will tear up some of the work. Enjoy it while you can.
One more example of how much influence Celebrate Marco Members have. Let's turn this special interest group out of our government and return our city to the people. Give us back a government that represents the people, an open government. Vote for Batte, Neylon, Hall and Guidry.
Hopefully, Mr. Elliot will do his communicating with our City Council during open chambers and not behind closed doors. Our citizens are also interested in what interests the members of the Chamber of Commerce.
So all the water that used to filter thru our swales back to the aquafier is now going into a catch basin? It then filters out all the nasty grass cuttings and coconuts and things as small as cigerette butts? All of which are organic and pose no danger to any living thing on the planet (unless you dry out the butts and smoke em). Does it filter out the motor oil and road grease too? You know, those nasty petroleum productes that all those contractors trucks leak on our roadways. Does it filter out the nitrates that are put on our lawns to make them green? You know, that stuff that causes red tide blooms and dumps dead fish on our beaches. Oh! How will our aquafiers be replenished if the water can no longer filter thru our swales? We don't need it, the city has more water then it can use says Rony Joel. But Mr. Tears put us on water restrictions and won't recomemnd a waiver. Why not collect this filtered water and return it for reuse water? Because it isn't clean enough without further processing thats why. So how come this fresh water that isn't clean enough for our lawns isn't harmful to our saltwater eco system? Because Rony Joel and Administrator Tears says so, that's why. This story is lacking in so many different areas that I simply could not let it go by. Why cannot the reporters of this paper cover a story and do so in a professional manner?
Vote to bring Marco Island back to the people. Vote for Councilmen who will listen and seek consent from the people. Vote for Representative government. Vote for Batte, Hall, Neylon and Guidry.
Vote to bring Marco Island back to the people. Vote for a Council that will listen and seek consent from it's citizens. Vote for Representative government. Vote Batte, Hall, Guidry and Neylon.
You should have been here when they were dumping ground water filled with hydrogen sulfide directly into the waterways. I understand they still can do that when digging a well for a lift station that will not be used for years. The oysters were dropping off my sea wall and pilings. I never saw that before either. I used to see a lot more fish action in the waterways before they started that pounding machine in the street that almost shook my house apart too. I'm surprised there is anything living in our waterways.
lauralbi1, still telling lies. That is so typical of your side. It is the one thing you and the supporters of the sewer are consistant about. You all lie. FDEP does not have the power to do as you say. Only the people of Marco Island have that power unless the water can be proven to be polutted. Our waterways are clean or pristine as the Conservancy claims.
ejburger, you just told three lies, 1. the state will not force us to be sewered. 2. Halting the STRP will not cost us more money but less. 100 million dollars will not have to be spent and our utility fees will be reduced. 3. I have not spinned anything you wrote above. If the 4 fellows you want in office get elected then we all know what to expect, more of the same. Bad unresponsive secretive backroom government that only wants to spend money on bigger and bigger capital projects. Other than that, we really don't know do we because your candidates have not proposed any solutions have they? Vote for Bate, Hall, Neylon and Guidry if you want new ideas and solutions to our problems.
Eagleeye, if the pipe is outside your house, hook up or don't hook up. That is your decision to make if you vote for Batte, Hall, Neylon and Guidry. If you decide to hook up you need only pay around 6,000 dollars impact fee plus a 1,200 dollar installation fee for a total of around 7,200 to do so,only if you vote for Batte, Hall, Neylon and Guidry. If however, you want to give your government 21,000 dollars to hook up, vote for Recter, Gibson, Waldack and Trotter. Before you vote, please check the work experence of all four candidates before you vote. I think you will find that Gibson and Waldack are really lacking and will find themselves way over their head as Coucilmembers. This is your City and your tax dollars you are asking these people to run. Your vote is important and you cannot take it back once you vote. Remember how Popoff fooled you, don't let that happen again.
patton1: If you really believe what you say, then you will encourage whomever wins the election to perform a forensic audit of all expenditures and contracting activities surrounding the STRP and Collier Blvd. expansion, during the last eight years.
A vote for Butch is a vote against those who want to keep stealing tax money for the benefit of the Chamber of Commerce. A vote for Butch is a vote against the likes of Don Farmer and his wife. A vote for Butch is a vote against ignorance and total disregard for our residential community. A vote for Butch is a vote against people like Ed Issler who will kiss the you know what just so he can mingle with the in crowd on Marco Island. A vote for Butch is the City Contracting Officer's worst nightmare. I think I'll go vote for Butch because Gibson is only a bartender waiting to do John Arceri's bidding. I'll vote for Butch because financially bankrupt Waldack is also waiting to do John Arceri's bidding. I'll vote for Butch beause Bill Trotter was such a lousy Councilman and never saw an ordinance or resolution he didn't like, especially if it helped get him and his wife a meal at the Marriott. I'll vote for Butch because Rector is a nice guy, but has not revealed any ideas like Butch has. Butch will bring us reuse water to our homes, he will reduce our utility rates, he will stop the individual asessments and will never invent new fees to make up for state imposed revenue reductions. He also will never vote to put a toll on the Jolley Bridge. A vote for Butch is a vote for the future of Marco Island.
Anybody going to vote for the bartender and the failed property speculator? Or how about the Councilman that can't remember how many times he voted to screw the residents? I can't imagine how anyone in their right mind could vote for a bunch of losers to run their city. The rich, powerful and elitists will spend their money to keep their control of our City come hell or highwater. Vote to give our city back to the residents and the taxpayers, vote for Batte, Hall, Neylon and Guidry.
Farmer you really are gaining a lot of friends on this island. I noticed one of those expensive political ads you contributed to in the Eagle. Imagine the surprise on the Realtors and Mortgage lenders and other merchants that allowed their names to be printed as supporting the hotels, time shares and law firms over the residents who live here when we put that list next to our phones. I know I will check the list not once but twice prior to calling any of those folks for business. Thing is there were only 260 or so of them, mostly couples. Not much of a political base but certainly representitive of the elite and the ads prove you have money. Never saw so many adds for a small town City Council election. What's even more significant is that the ads were promoting a bartender, a failed incumbent and a fellow that had to file for bankruptsy because he speculated in property sales. Not the kind of people most would vote to take care of the tax revenue we give the city, is it?
The meeting was civil because the agenda wasn't full of items to screw the Residents. You could have a meeing like this every month if the City would stop picking the pockets of the taxpayers. As for the Collier Blvd comment, this was done during the Council discussion period. A period in the meeting in which the public may not speak. It was the only time the Council could pat themselves on the back for ripping off the taxpayers. This money should have been used in the neighborhoods not to showcase the hotels and time share buildings.
veridicus are you trying to divert attention away from the activities that Celebrate Marco has been involved in? Everyone including you must have seen the contrived letters that John Arceri wrote and the resent article in the paper by the three state employees. An article written by John Arceri and Mone Lazerus. Nothing in that article even relates to Marco Island. It is so full of generalities and political speak that it makes little sense as to why the paper even printed it. Celebrate Marco is a political organization developed to sell snow to eskimos or sewers to an island that is doing fine without them. Hopefully the State Attorney General will close these folks down so that we no longer have to read and hear lies.
Never forget he is an attorney. His training is to lead you by the nose OldMarcoMan. I don't think he is a hothead either, but I can't trust him if he can't trust me enough to let me know what his plans are.
Why? We gave Popoff a chance and where did that leave us. I want Recker to propose something not just talk the talk. He needs to commit and advance plans and proposals to improve the position of our Residential community. Otherwise I have nothing to compare him to.
Issler, now your talking. Let's get some promises out of Recker and his 3 little buddies to do what you propose. If you want me to vote for them however, they'll have to do it for less. Why? Because we will recieve less in revenue next year - unless of course these four little piglets want to increase our utility fees or impose more assessments upon us. Just be honest and up front is all we expect. Let us know what you have planed for us. If Batte, Hall, Neylon and Guidry can make promises then surely the four little piglets can.
