In other bigger cities in US they have no money or just low money. The police department has the halve or a quarter budget like Marco Island. But they are crime resorts or destinations.
The formula is very simple:

Rich city - no crime - big police department.
Poor city - big crime - small police department.

Just a powerful city council can change go rid of MIPD and bring the Sheriff back.

As far as what you have said here, I actually disagree with very little. I voted against the city police and would do it again.

Comparing Smokehouse Bay bridge with Jolley Bridges is apples and oranges. Smokehouse Bay is actually 2 bridges that need to be built and not one. The new bridge will be higher than the original (the original bridge has a clearance on the Southbound side of 9.05 ft and 9.72 ft on the Northbound side). The new bridge will be 13 ft based on the meeting held 3 years ago. Much larger boats will be able to clear, especially without the obstruction in the middle of the waterway.

A very good decision better are 16 to feet clearance.

I am as condo dweller like everything improves and supports Marco Island as boating community.
