Thank you for posting a very interesting story. However, you have made a couple of factual errors. 2500 B-17s did not head for Merseburg. In fact, the whole 8th AF coomitment for that day (including fighters) was approxiamately 2200 on missions across Europe. Of these, there were two sets of raids on Merseburg, totalling approx 400 B-17s.

You also state that 69 B-17s were lost. Again incorrect, as it was 28 lost across Europe, with 10 damaged beyond repair.
