Written on Auf Wiedersehen – Islanders gather to remember Marion Blomeier:

It was ridiculous that it cost $10 to get into Marion's memorial service. Truly pathetic. I stayed home, thank you.

Written on Arbiter's report reinstates Marco police officer fired last year for misconduct :

One wonders who paid off the arbiter? Don't worry, this nasty, mean-spirited guy who enjoys harassing people will screw up again. It's in his nature, and when it happens Don Hunter will be able to rid the department of him AGAIN.

Written on Marco Island Planning Board: Keep the community on its feet:

When the thought of exercise beckons, I lie down and take a nap. It's a matter of physics: a body in motion tends to stay in motion, a body at rest tends to stay at rest. THIS body prefers to stay at rest.

"PRO sewer"...Marco's gut-wrenching issue that won't die. Well let me say this: I know for a fact, as sure as God made little green apples, that had we been allowed to vote on the sewer issue, I would have definitely voted "NO." Without a doubt.
There was the financial question of course, always a major issue, but also the thought of having my street and all streets in the area as well as my lawn torn up put me decidedly against getting rid of my septic system and going on city sewer.
Well, as of last summer, I am now on city sewer and I think it's great. My street and lawn were torn up but all has been put back nicely, I don't worry about using my garbage disposal or dishwasher, and I have no more concerns about what might be going on under my lawn, buying Rid-X every month to keep the thing as clean as possible until it needed to be pumped out every few years. So, I was wrong and I admit it.
This would never have been an issue had the idiot Mackle brothers not run out of money (among other things); their original intentions were to sewerize the entire island when it was being developed but who was going to pay for it in 1970? So forty years later, we finally did and are better off for it.

Written on Marco police officer accused of abusing authority after felony traffic stop:

in response to marcofriend:

The lawsuit between Island Drugs and the City of Marco is still ongoing. It isn't over yet and will certainly be interesting to hear the outcome.

Of course it is still ongoing. It may be ongoing for years. The judicial system in Collier County moves at a snail's pace, due to judges who love to hear themselves talk, the constant turn-over of prosecutors and lawyers who enjoy raising issues that only extend the proceedings. MIPD over-reacted as only they can and now, I suspect everybody concerned just wants this to go away. If they fool around long enough, it probably will.

Written on Marco Island announces comprehensive financial analysis:

in response to 1adam12:

Right again. You must have been a copper at Marco PD.

No way. I'd be truly embarrassed to say that I worked for the MIPD. That's not to say that there aren't 'some' hardworking, caring officers on the force but far too many of Chief Carr's hires have adopted a mean-spirited, adversarial "them-against-us" attitude, prefer to meet arrest quotas rather than serve the citizens honestly and fairly, and can stretch legality to serve their own ends. How many times have officers or the chief of the CCSO been in the paper for improper activities? Very few to my knowledge.

Written on Marco police officer accused of abusing authority after felony traffic stop:

Two points are bothering me:
1. "After hours of surveillance (of the car in the parking lot) Sgt Thompson advised units.....to conduct a felony traffic stop."
All based on an annoymous tip? Those run rampant on that island but the MIPD act on them as if they are gospel. Why didn't Sgt. Thompson go into the restaurant during those hours of surveillance and ASK Joey what was going on? He knows him of course. Was that too much to ask? Apparently, if indeed he was 'out of get him.' An arrest probably got him near his quota for the month, and he did have to justify all those hours of surveillance.
2. Mr. Oliverio told officers to contact Glenn Zirgibel who could explain what was going on, but they refused apparently, perhaps at Sgt. Thompson's bidding, and instead arrested Mr. Oliverio. Seems to me that all Sgt. Thompson was interested in doing was making the arrest.
We're not talking about some unknown tourist from Idaho, but about a respected restauranteur , known to almost everybody (who may have had personal problems in his past but nobody is perfect), and Sgt. Thompson could have given him the benefit of the doubt. Was he worried about Joey fleeing to Venezuela? Hardly. One would think Thompson was stalking Osama bin Laden.

Written on Marco Island announces comprehensive financial analysis:

The city can save $4 million plus by jettisoning the MIPD and all concerned with it. The city is paying the CCSO as well, anyway, so the MIPD is redundant.

Written on Marco police officer accused of abusing authority after felony traffic stop:

in response to MIslander:

Tige Thompson was fired from the Collier County Sheriff's Office in 2005 for destroying evidence and lying about video taping topless women during Canoe Races (http://www.naplesnews.com/news/2005/m...).

He was then hired by the MIPD. Last year, he routinely crashed his patrol cruiser into a lamppost. No sobriety test was conducted. (http://www.naplesnews.com/news/2010/f...)

Tige Thompson is the man involved in many of the past few high profile arrests, including the practicing medicine without a license kids. This man has no credibility when it comes to judicial proceedings.

He was fired by the county for lying and covering up evidence, and the Marco Island Police Department makes him a sergeant.

How does such a small police force with relatively no crime, and a budget of over $4 million annually and growing, bring this much attention against themselves? Time to go away, MIPD.

Very few MIPD officers have much credibility in judicial proceedings, which illicts a great deal of tongue-in-cheek amusement throughout the CCSO.
Get rid of the MIPD and spend the $4 million on something the island needs; it doesn't need the constant embarrassment generated by their staggeringly poor performance, beginning with Chief Carr's drinking problem.

Written on PHOTOS: Dive Into Oceans event brings scuba to first-time divers at Rookery Bay:

I am surprised the SPCA allows "touch tanks". They should be outlawed.
And to teach young, first-time divers to touch wildlife is criminal. One of the important rules of scuba diving is "leave it alone and it will leave you alone." The advice they are being given to man-handle wildlife is unbelievably bad.

in response to u2cane:

I agree with dissolving the force, saves money in our budget!!!!!!

The MIPD began servicing the city in 2000, after a vote by islanders that supposedly supported its formation. Yet, dozens of islanders claimed they voted "no" on the referedum (myself included) yet it passed. One wonders what strings were pulled by laywers like Glenn Tucker to influence the outcome. Mr. Tucker had a reputation for behind-the-scenes manuvering. Even so, why does the MIPD have so many problems? It's an island of 15,000 people and it would be interesting to find out just how many lawsuits the city has had to fend off involving the MIPD. Remember when they harassed and targeted a local Pharmacy for filling pain medication perscriptions? I wonder how that was brushed under the rug. It appears their oath to serve and protect goes out the window the minute they get a badge. Everybody knows Joey Oliviero; he wasn't going anywhere. There was no reason to arrest him, but of course that looks mighty good on Thompson's record of arrests.

Written on Marco police officer accused of abusing authority after felony traffic stop:

I don't know, yet, if Thompson did indeed overstep his authority but quite obviously he knows who Joe Oliviero is and to adopt MIPD's usual 'hang-em-and-hang-em-high' attitude does raise a question or two. It does indeed appear that there is a vendetta at work here. It's a well-known fact that certain officers in the MIPD target islanders they feel need attention, and they use the flimsiest of reasons to harass them. One, now fired, was notorious for it (read the January 2010 article) and it was surprising that he was fired.

Written on PHOTOS: Scrambling for eggs – Thousands throng Mackle Park for annual Spring Jubilee:

"Thousands" at Mackle Park, thousands at the Sunrise Service, thousands at Taste of Marco, thousands at everything now. It's really hideous. One longs for earlier times when hundreds, not thousands, showed up for events and all this current crud was up North shoveling show, where they belong. Finally, they're heading out faster than rats fleeing a sinking ship so we'll soon get our island back.

Written on Letter to the Editor: Traffic chaos:

in response to Ian_Curtis:

So, I was coming down Heathwood a few minute ago and 2 police cars with Emergency lights on were on the side of the road. One was actually in the road blocking it that I had to go in the other lane to get by. What were they doing?
One was leaning against his car talking to the one blocking the road. There was no other car in sight. All I could do was laugh.

Did the officers have on bullet proof vests? Our intrepid MIPD officers wear them when handing out tickets. By the way, crossing the double yellow line will get you a ticket. You are lucky they didn't see you do it.

Written on Marco Island police officer fired for inaccurate report about fight with suspect:

I read that this creep was going to hire a lawyer and do a tap dance around the facts that got him fired in hopes of getting his job back. Does anyone know whatever happened to the unlamented John Derrig?

Written on Fla. Senate committee OK's immigration bill :

No more illegal immigrants in Florida? Don't hold your breath.
But 'it could happen' (to quote Judy Tenuta).
Just think about it: Miami, not to mention Collier County, will lose half its population and they might be nice places again.
But, I will need to start to cut my lawn. That's a bummer.

Written on Going back to the drawing board nets Marco Island $18,596:

The enormous lighting display on the East Winterberry Bridge can probably be seen from the International Space Station. Who in their right mind approved all those stupid, ridiculous lights? For the thousands who cross that bridge on foot every night?Somebody in the lighting business made out like a bandit. Business as usual in Collier County.

Written on SHOP TALK: Some ‘dreamers’ are taxing our patience:

All I hear is that we should be SPENDING money, on an Academy that we don't need. Need. On a new community center at Mackle Park. The one there is fine; we don't NEED a new one. City Council should but the yacht club? I don't think so; why for heaven's sake? It's a useless building for well-heeled drunks to stand around and drink. One of these days it will fold. We didn't NEED that redundant, practically empty historical museum; the one in Naples is great. The millions they got could have been better spent, on something we NEED (like 24-hour health care at the Health Center, what Gene Sarazen thought he was paying for). We don't NEED the MIPD. All that group does is spend money and harass us. We didn't NEED to spend millions on that water company. Have our water bills gone down? Mine hasn't.
Why don't we try SAVING money for a change. Pay our bills, get the island in the black and STOP spending money we don't have.
Just a thought.

Written on Teens charged with practicing medicine without a license on Marco Island :

So, if my wife gives me a couple aspirin for a headache, or Prilosec for heartburn, is she guilty of practicing medicine without a license?

Written on MUG SHOTS: Three Marco Island roommates beat man with dress belts, police say:

in response to liberator100:

Marco Maven: You would not know the difference between a flack jacket and dress jacket. Next time, why don't you just stop by and laugh your head off.

I know what a dress is (my wife has some) and what a jacket is (have some of those too) but what is a dress-jacket? Sounds like a new fashion statement.
I'll buy Thom Carr a drink on Thursday at Esplanade; maybe he will know and perhaps can explain why we are wasting money on bullet-proof vests.
Betcha they sent SWAT out to arrest those teens practicing medicine without a license.

Written on Collier leaders may sign off on camping, leashed pets on Keewaydin Island:

The only pit bulls I've ever seen on Keewaydin are two-legged, have a badge and a gun, and should be leashed but are allowed to roam free, pestering and irritating people.

Written on MUG SHOTS: Three Marco Island roommates beat man with dress belts, police say:

I wonder if the valiant Marco Police showed up in flack jackets and bullet proof vests? I saw one of our finest giving a speeding ticket to a miscreant, wearing a bullet proof vest. Really? On Marco? Are things that bad? Roving bands of assasins? I almost stopped and laughed my head off but I am afraid the officer in question would not have been amused.

Written on Marco police officer charged with battery:

The officer acted with enormous restraint in my opinion. I personally would have shot the punks, in the knee...and they would forever remember their visit to Marco Island.

Written on Guidry seventh to announce Marco City Council candidacy:

Dr. Guidry would make a terrific city councilor. He has had his finger up my butt on several occasions and might want to do the same to most of our city councilors because it beats what's up there now, their heads.

Written on Tax or toll? Both options under consideration to pay for new Jolley bridge:

Put on a toll...on both bridges. The business people will whine and complain but they will do that in any case and who cares what they think? If they don't like it, they can move to Naples. And if a toll keeps people off this island, so much the better.

Written on DiSciullo opts out of re-election bid:

Frankly, good riddance. Perhaps well-intentioned, she sided with the gang of sewer rats on far too many instances when she knew it was the wrong decision and her flip-flopping on issues proved this.

Written on Water notice lifted on Marco following main break:

We have to boil the water, we can't breathe the bad air, we can't drive on most streets due to the horrid construction, the real estate market soared to unrealistic levels in 2003-2004 only to see it crash this year ....wow....what a paradise this is. And people wonder why people are fleeing this place like rats on a sinking ship?

Written on None:

So Moss is going up to Naples. Well, he spent all of marco's money and ruined the air and infrastructure of the island (not to mention the health of the citizens) so I guess his work here is finished and he will wreck Naples next. I guess he knows we will boot his butt out of office next March so leaving before that happens will look better on his resume instead of being fired from the job. And that idiot city council gave him a raise. Incredible that these people are so stupid.

Written on City Council: Stop dewatering until city knows more:

People told this idiot city council they were playing with fire with the sewer program and NONE of them would listen. Now the air is bad. This city council (and the two loons who left already) should be hanged.

Written on Marco's 10-year anniversary: Give us your two cents:

Today's Eagle informed us that it took 17 years of voting for an incorporation referendum for it to finally pass, in 1997, carefully timed for August when snowbirds are gone. It was thought being a city was more advantageous than depending on Collier County for services. How wrong they were. The island is a bankrupt disaster today, thanks in no small measure to our illustrious city councilors. I suggest we jettison the city and go back to Collier County. It can't possibly be any worse.
