The academy has found a temporary location. Let's see if there is any interest in the school.

This reminds me of the settlers taking over native American lands in the west.

The eagle is a federally protected bird. The eagles currently use every tree on tract K.

Was it right to murder the American Indians in the west in the name of progress?

The same goes for the eagles!

The Conservancy spoke out last night at the council meeting.

They feel they can only support the eagle Sanctuary.

Remember one needs to get a permit from the conserversy before any building can take place.

If you remember they would not issue a permit for "The Solar Panel project"

The Academy needs to find another location, They have been offered the land at the "Y"? What's wrong with the Y?

Don't you feel we have killed to many humans and wildlife in the name of progress?

People like you make me sick!

Written on Committee pushing latest idea for Marco Island Tract K, an eagle sanctuary POLL:

in response to blondie:

Those of you who want to put up a concrete building namely a school are only selfish, self absorbed and very very self centered. It is a wonder of nature to have these eagles return year after year. Yes, I know that they are only birds to some of you because you have no understanding of nature and life in the wild. These eagles are intellegent enough to come to this tiny island and this particular tree year after year. They have chosen this spot to be their breeding grounds and all you care about putting up a brick or cement school. Find another spot. This spot is already taken

Selfish? Self absorbed?Self Centered?
To want a better school for our children?
C'mon

Any one who owns a house on this Island is guilty of taking green space from nature.
There is a new house on Jamaica that was built in the past few years right under a tree with a nest of eagles. The eagles come back year after year and are there today.

Written on Letter to the Editor: Wrong place for high school:

I think the traffic concerns are a reach. It's a straight shot down Tigertail from Collier Blvd.. There's far more traffic to Tommie Barfield & the Charter Middle School with the buses and parents bringing their children to school. And, those schools are not as close to a main road.

Written on Guest column: Tract K, a Marco eagle sanctuary:

I didn't see anyone standing up for the eagles that nests off Jamaica on the golf course when they built a house "right" under their nest last year. And at present they are doing sewer work well within 300 yards of this nest which is very noisy.

Written on Guest column: Tract K, a Marco eagle sanctuary:

Yeah, the heck with the future of the younger generations of Marco. Let's make a park so the eagle and the elderly citizens that chose to move next to a "possible" school site will not be disturbed.
By the way, Brillo you may want to check your spelling before you attempt to insult someone.

Written on Letter to the Editor: What’s happening with Tract K?:

in response to Brillo:

Ned,
Living near a Middle School can quite different than living near a High School. I have seen it, too. The ages of the students bring with them a different set of problems. Cars, personal interaction between individuals from this school and other schools, drugs, cutting out between classes. etc.

Yeah, you're right. We can't have kids from "another" school coming down here and attacking a student because he didn't like the flag hanging in his car.

Written on Letter to the Editor: What’s happening with Tract K?:

in response to Brillo:

Ned,
It works both ways. In order to build the School on Tract K about 300 or so kids have to be bused, hear, from Naples. Think what that will do to a residential area.

I live by the Charter Middle School. I've seen it.

Written on Guest column: Tract K, a Marco eagle sanctuary:

How many parks does this little Island need?
I'm for preserving the eagles, nature and the like But, I think there is a underlying motive from the people behind this endeavour to keep an empty lot around them.
I don't know about the deed for tract K but EVERY real estate map (new and old) I have seen has Tract K listed as "a future school site".I can't speak for anyone else but, I would have taken that into consideration before I thought about purchasing a house in that area.

Written on Letter to the Editor: What’s happening with Tract K?:

Yeah! close ANOTHER road on Marco and put in a park! And tell all the kids that go to school in Montana,Iowa,The Dakotas or the like that they also need "diversity" and need to be bused to a different school.

Written on Letter to the Editor: Merge like a zipper:

It's the CEO's that think they can just Boss Hog their way up to the front instead of waiting in line.
Merge like a zipper works very well if the traffic is light. And in "rural" areas.
If you drive around the country, this is not the only place this occurs.

Written on Letter to the Editor: Merge like a zipper:

It just amazes me how you just don't get it. Just because there's a lane with no cars in it and a merge sign you feel you have the privilege to go up that lane and cut everyone off and slow traffic. Which is the PROBLEM ! If you would just move into the lane that doesn't end there would not be a traffic jam or people cutting you off. Traffic would move if you had the "consideration" to move over when you are able to, not go to the front because you beleive you have some special right.. You people are probably the same ones that ignore the big orange signs that say "Construction Ahead" THIS LANE ENDS and do not move over because you would have to get behind someone. You want to go to the front of the line and complain that it's the other people that have no consideration because they won't let you in a line people like you are holding up.. Just Amazing.

Written on Letter to the Editor: Merging of traffic at the Jolley Bridge:

You morons just don't get it do you? If the traffic is light and not backed up fine , merge together at the appropriate time. But if the traffic is backed up and cars are waiting in the lane that is not ending and you go past all the cars to "merge" up front YOU are causing the back up because cars have to slow or stop to let you in. If you just "merged" where you are able, most likely in the rear of the line of traffic, the traffic would move smoothly and everyone would be able to get where they need to go,whether it be a bathroom or a golf game. But, you feel it is your right to Boss Hog your way up to the front and slow the whole line of traffic down. And have the audacity to talk about courtesy
The Disney parks have a long standing rule that if you cut in line you will be ejected from the park. And,I find it humorous that some people have found a way around this by renting those little hove-a-round scooters. They scooter up to the front of the line and jump off their scooters and on the ride.

Just did it last week . got a smile and wave from the officer.

Written on Letter to the Editor: Merging of traffic at the Jolley Bridge:

The reason the so called "passing lane" did not have any cars in it is that they already "merged" because they can read the big yellow SIGNs (plural) that say this lane ends. And the reason they are patiently waiting in line is they are waiting for some yo-yo that doesn't head the signs or thinks they are more important than everyone else and are going to cut in line and slow everyone else down. I have seen the Marco police and Sheriff's dept. give out tickets for this. so,if you are in the "passing lane" and cutting everyone off and cutting in the line go ahead and call the law.You ARE the reason the line is slow and obstructed. You KNOW the lane ends and you could have MERGED into the PROPER lane.
A so called "passing lane" doesn't have big yellow signs that say THIS LANE ENDS.

Let's take a survey of citizens to identify their dislikes and likes in our community. I'll bet you that we can find enough people to justify rounding up a few city employees just because they don't like them. Written on Marco YMCA, high school venture to share land:

in response to SunBum:

Certainly, youth and adult activities at the Y are nothing new to the immediate Y neighborhood. Countless families, viewing proximity to a school and/or recreational facility as a real plus, have made it a priority to live close to the already zoned 'kid friendly' TBE, MICMS, and Y complexes. The addition of sporting events and other high school related programs such as music concerts, theatre programs, chorus performances, art shows, and mentoring programs along with the inclusion of a Renaissance Academy will expand the recreational, educational and entertainment opportunities exponentially for those who have already deemed proximity to the Y facility as a real plus.

Additionally, the MI Academy is scheduled to be in session from 9:00 AM to 3:45 PM out of consideration. (Imagine the improved quality of a student's life over those currently having to be at a bus stop at 6:30 AM to spend two hours of their day going to and from school.) Since only Seniors and students from off the island will have parking privileges, most students will walk, ride bicycles or take public transportation. Given the timing and managed volume of cars, local traffic should not be adversely affected.

As for sports . . . The many athletes from the island who have gone on to win state contests, athletic scholarships, etc. are testament to our island’s potential to do well in sports. Undeniably, a school of 2,000 has the same number of players on a team as a school of 400. Academy students will not only have a greater chance of playing on a team, they will have an added benefit in some sports of team members having participated together on Eagle teams sponsored by the Optimist Club. Add to this, the professional sports champions/coaches/trainers/managers (not to mention retired high school coachers) on the island from the NFL, the NBA, baseball, hockey and it becomes easy to envision a successful sports program which includes the greatest number of island students possible with a desire to play.

Ultimately, the bottom line is individuals, upon comparing their zoned school and the public charter high school, will be able to determine their own ’best fit’ as to both their high school and their sports program. (They may actually attend the Academy and play for their zoned school team.) School choice is just one of the countless benefits of the Marco Island Academy.

Very well said

Ned, why do we NEED a Charter High School? NEED and WANT are two different things. We don't NEED a charter high school, a few people WANT a charter high school because they are afraid of the diversity at Lely. All a charter high will do is shelter some kids that have parents that have sheltered them their whole lives. High school is a life experience, not a shelter.

I really don't know where all of you get this opinion that that those of us that state we need, or want, or whatever a Charter High School are afraid of diversity, and I never mentioned Lely at all. Those of you that oppose the need for a Charter High School always think we are attacking Lely.
I don't see any of the kids at Marco Island Charter Middle School being sheltered and there seems to be children of all races there if that's what you're referring to as diversity.
Also, there are children that go to the Charter Middle School from all over Collier County. Why do you think parents are bringing their children all the way to Marco? Because they're afraid of diversity? Come On ! Lose that poor excuse.
We want and need good education for our children and beleive this school can give it to our children.
Also, the excuse of a Charter not having extra curricular activity, another B.S. excuse. drop it already.
Marco Charter has a good sports program, what makes you think a Charter High School would not?
