Written on New city council seated, city manager receives three 'no confidence' votes :

What's with the City's preoccupation of replacing perfectly good streetlights with something we have to buy, maintain, and get billed power usage for? I don't see any problem with the utility installed luminaires we currently have on most of our streets. I recently noticed the new fixtures on Park Ave. near Winn-Dixie and a bunch more in a pile behind a building over there. Utility installed lights are supplied with power and maintained for a fixed monthly fee per unit. This looks like just another Public Works boondoggle to me. Get rid of Tim Pinter, he's every bit as bad as Rony Joel ever was.

Written on Election 2012: Mack struggles to emerge from shadows of presidential race, famous father :

Emerge from the shadow of his famous father? Cashing in on his family's good name is the only reason this worthless slug has gotten as far as he has. It looks like he finally over-reached. I have little doubt Bill Nelson is going to send his sorry butt packing back to California tomorrow. It'll be interesting to see who is s----- enough to hire him as a lobbyist.

Written on Letter to the Editor: Just asking:

Has anyone actually looked at the cost of producing re-use water? It certainly isn't free. Looking at my Marco Island Utilities bill, I pay $4.96/1000 gallons for sewer usage. This is the cost of the resource, just like pumping water out of Henderson Creek (North Treatment Plant) or the Floridan Auquifer (South Treatment Plant) The rates for wastewater service need to be adjusted to provide relief to sewer customers who provide this resource.

Written on Marco officer involved in crash to retire, receive $10,000 :

MIPD has hired 5 new cops since they canned Ed. I guess they were really hurting at Dunkin' Donuts. The City should've denied the grievance and went to arbitration if necessary, it would've been a slam-dunk. Doing 80 in a 35 zone without the emergency equipment activated is just plain s-----, particularly with his years of experience. So are the police chief and City manager for even considering this settlement.

Written on Marco Island City Council – Budget discussion brings on heated exchange :

So, the village idiots are hiking the millage rate once again. Get ready for your property value to slide (for the sixth year in a row) as more disgusted homeowners throw in the towel. As for the incumbent council candidates running for re-election,see ya, too much financial baggage to be trusted with my money. Maybe, once the farmer's market reopens you can score some cheap produce in Immokalee and become a huckster out of the trunk of your car.

Written on Guest Commentary: The making of a good candidate :

Here we go with the Gulf Breeze/Milton boogey man again. I personally doubt these two little podunk towns could've mustered the resources to seal the deal. The utility would've become a ward of the Florida Governmental Utilities Authority as Golden Gate City's water and sewer operations are today. Not to change the subject but, how's your boy Rony doing these days, did he find work yet? One last thing, a belated "too bad" on your and Rony's failed attempt to sieze LCEC's Marco Island assets. Our committee was not about to stand by and watch a rerun of the water and sewer fiasco. By the way John, don't you have something to study out at Ave Maria?

Written on The big picture – Marco Island Budget Sub-Committee prepares report, proposes millage rate :

News Flash! Bonita Springs just announced they'll be holding the line on taxes this year. I guess their property values will rise next year. Are you listening Marco City Council? Probably not.

Written on Marco city leader: Tax for 24/7 walk-in clinic could be in place by Jan. 1 :

This is a non-emergency facility we're talking about. Why are we even having this discussion? Sounds like a non-necessary tax and spend boondoggle to me. Take two aspirin and call me in the morning.

Written on The big picture – Marco Island Budget Sub-Committee prepares report, proposes millage rate :

Here we go again. Property values decline, so Council raises tax rates to make up the revenue. More people get fed-up and leave, and property values fall futher. In their infinite wisdom, Council raises taxes again, and so it goes. We've been playing this game for the last five years. Last year, Collier County and the City of Naples held the line on taxes and guess what? Their property values increased this year. Think the numbskulls in City Hall will learn? I doubt it. This November, I think we need some fresh faces on Council, vote the incumbents OUT. Show the whole lot of them who really calls the shots around here. I sincerely hope you agree.

Written on Collier's assessed property values show increase, first time in 5 years :

Collier County and the City of Naples held the line on property taxes last year. Marco Island (as usual) went up. Watch for further declining values, and some piece of crap Realtor to come out of the woodwork and tout that buying opportunities have never been better.

Written on Marco ex-cop still hopes to get job back despite careless driving conviction:

Just careless driving for someone who sent their victim to intensive care by helicopter? You'd get that ticket for any fender-bender. He needs to move on, he apparently wasn't fit to continue in NYC and now proven he's no "keeper" here. As for the "Shermanator", unless he's learned his lesson about harassing patrons of "the bird" he'll be back on the streets (sans job) in no time.

Written on Marco Island homeowners could face new swale landscaping requirements:

I hardly know where to begin. "The change comes as the City moves toward improving water quality in the waterways around the island." (wan't that the line they used to sell the STRP?) "...the City will be looking to standardize all sidewalks to a minimum of 6 feet wide". 5 paragraphs above, the article states "Using organic materials improves water quality by allowing collected water to percolate through nature's filters." (Despite its chemical composition, concrete is not an organic material, and adding 50% more of it to our sidewalks is not going to improve water quality.) If you've had the displeasure of driving the 1100 block of Collier Blvd. in the last couple days, one side is shut down by QE, IN SEASON! Note to the City: Rony Joel is gone, we don't need QE's endless projects driving anyone else away. If Tim Pinter can't get rid of QE, get rid of Tim Pinter!

They WERE reasonable until the GOP (whom the oil industry has nothing to fear from) got control of the House in November 2010. Bush let Bin Laden get away in Tora Bora, Obama tracked him down and found him comfortably retired in Pakistan, then delivered what we've been waiting 10 years for. Oh, I almost forgot dispatching the Somali pirates who siezed the Maersk Alabama and held the captain hostage. Bachmann, Perry, Cain, Gingrich, and now Santorum. The GOP is throwing everything against the wall hoping something will stick. The GOP has had the majority in the House just short of a year now and passed nothing significant, other than a symbolic repeal of ObamaCare that went nowhere in the Senate. Written on Arbiter's report reinstates Marco police officer fired last year for misconduct :

I WAS here when the police referendum was held. As far as residents voting at the polls, the cops lost. The vote was carried by absentees, snowbirds who were promised extra security at no additional cost. The annual police budget then was 1/3 of what it is today. Many of the former absentees are now permanent residents or moved on before things soured in recent years. I seriously doubt if a vote of confidence today would yield the same results. Same goes for City incorporation. I believe the REAL purpose of running-up nearly $300 million in public debt was so the local government could never be dismantled without settling-up with the creditors first, and that ain't never, ever gonna happen.

Written on Arbiter's report reinstates Marco police officer fired last year for misconduct :

So I guess the likelihood of returning to slavery and suffrage are ...... crazy talk, which you alluded to in your first post, by suggesting the Teaparty types are endorsing such a reversal? Let's be real!

Which begs the question, what is so remote about the likelihood that an anti-abortion amendment crosses a presidential desk? Remember, there was a time when slaves were considered chattel. You know, where the Teaparty wants America to return. LOL

I could easily see an amendment that defines the start of human life, at least, it will define if and when we are protected and rights granted or not, in or out of the womb. No religious talk, just like to know when the government will protect me, in some cases from a pregnant child that wishes to not give me the opportunity to life and the pursuit of happiness. Is life not precious enough to protect it?

And as to the darned best government can buy, may I recommend a smaller, more efficient government that perhaps is more affordable and not as costly to the average American. Then perhaps we can all have ownership, instead of the current high prices paid by lobbyist or special interest groups to gain influence.

Going back to your initial point, I take it GOOOH is also duped into believing they can make a difference. I believe they have a very simple solution to eliminate lobbying .. unless you are willing to continue paying the high prices for this burdensome government. In my view, influence peddling is as common as breathing. We may just need to redefine who influences whom. In fact, most conversations are in essence influence peddling, typically in the form of free advice. But I can hear the rebuttal, free advice is worthless, that is why its free. So I guess I will pay to sway, except on election day.

VOTE 2012!

You're apparently not a Constitutional scholar as you seem to have missed the point of my reply entirely. Presidential approval has NOTHING to do with the enactment of an amendment, it totally hinges upon state legislature ratification (ERA's failure for example). I am not pro-abortion, but when faced with "the choice" 23 years ago, my wife and I chose life. Our son was born disabled, but that's the decision we made and we live with it every day. Lobbyists? You'll never be rid of them. The 1st amendment gives you a right to a redress of grievances by "petitioning" the government (money talks...etc). And finally, Election days, one of the fundamental freedoms decorated vets such as myself put our butts on the line for. I encourage EVERYONE to go to the polls on Election Day, no matter what you believe.

Written on Letter to the Editor: Educating the voters:

in response to ajm3s:

"Maybe you just like the part where rich, old, white men had it good while life pretty much sucked for everyone else."

No, I like it when a rich old black man can run for president! A man who actually understands that poverty and wealth are actually a condition one can face in their lifetime.

As many Americans can testify, as a student applying for her first job with accumulated debt to eventually moving on to accumulate wealth through her labors and/or intellectual properties.

"but you have to tell women they don't have the right to vote or negroes that they can be bought and sold as slaves, because that's the way it was."

And your examples were addressed by Constitutional amendments. Because that's the way it is! Read your history, so you do not repeat it, especially the ugly parts, progressive revisionist love to rewrite.

Speaking of your going back in history, the Democratic Party was sympathetic to those that supported slavery with Lincoln's Republican Party speaking out against dissolution of the union and abolishing slavery.

http://www.ushistory.org/gop/origins.htm

And today, the established political parties continue to enslave Americans with government support programs that go BEYOND support for the weak and disenfranchised. To bring the Federal monies home for our "well-being", but re-allocated based on political strength.

So if I understand it, the rich are getting richer but smaller in % of population, while the poor are getting poorer but gaining in % of population. And the middle class is, by default, going to the poor?

So is this an incentive problem? Or cultural? Brought about by government writing the rules to divide them more? Or behave in a socially acceptable manner? And Obama is complaining, when in fact, he is supporting the disparity through regulations and extension of support programs that discourages folks to go looking for work or starting small companies, including companies with a single employer.

Soros vs. Koch is a nice fight, but they may be seeking the same goals? O one would rather design a system of central government control (bureaucratic) where the other may be using the power of the central government to support its interests.

Solution: Dilute the power of central government.

And to us Teaparty folks who are duped in this dreamworld of self-reliance coupled with freedom of pursuit; some fulfilled their dream by starting and operating a business. Now I wish that others can fulfill theirs.

Hint: the government will not fulfill your dreams! Only you can!

Sure, slavery and womens' suffrage were abolished by constitutional amendments, the 13th & 19th respectively. Do you think they come out of thin air? They must move through Congress and be approved by 3/4 of the state legislatures before becoming law. A few weeks ago, the rich, old, black man running for President actually said he would sign an anti-abortion amendment into law if it came across his desk (LMAO). I thought the GOP was scraping the bottom of the barrel until Newt became the front runner. Soros vs. the Koch brothers? Hey, it's the best darned government money can buy!

Written on Letter to the Editor: Educating the voters:

So, Soros is a left-wing version of the Koch brothers? Sounds fair and balanced to me. As to the Tea Party, they just want to take America back to the way it was in the revolutionary days. OK fine, but you have to tell women they don't have the right to vote or negroes that they can be bought and sold as slaves, because that's the way it was. Maybe you just like the part where rich, old, white men had it good while life pretty much sucked for everyone else.

Gee, what projects were those? The electric municipalization/undergrounding scheme(which would have given us obscene electric rates), the Town Center CRA(could have easily put us well over $300 million in bonded debt), the Smokehouse Bay "designer" bridge, or perhaps the North Water Treatment Plant capacity expansion (MIU can't sell all the water they can produce right now). Include those people and the figure drops to about 18%. Ir's a shame the working class has lost their earning power and ability to prop-up our bloated government.
