Written on Letter to the Editor: Scale matters in a small tropical town:

Whenever I find myself in agreement with Konfuzius, I do a double take. Let the Marriott do whatever it wishes within its walls ... but hold it to the contract it signed.

Ed .... if you have any sense of objectivity, is there nothing that you would find objectionable while the Marriott lined its coffers (and you lined yours)? Why not a three - story parking garage? A pedestrian bridge over Collier, why not let the Marriott build to 20 stories ... rival Cape Marco ??? After all, wouldn't that be good for business? Isn't that what it's all about?

Residents don't matter, quality of life doesn't matter, safety doesn't matter, it's clearly all about what winds up in your wallet. I didn't move here for YOUR wallet.

Written on Letter to the Editor: Against Marriott expansion:

Matter should go to a referendum. The City should simply hold the Marriott to the contract it signed. Marco Island does not need the nightmare of Collier Blvd becoming a freeway, a whack-a-valet hazard with elimination of self parking, and even more trucks blocking traffic. The Marriott should be free to remodel / refurbish within its walls, but should otherwise live by the contract it signed.

I will vote NO.

Written on Letter to the Editor: Marriott – on the proposal and the trucks:

Sigh. We bike up and down Collier almost daily. The Marriott is doing just fine, thank you. It is nothing short of a spectacular resort. Is it losing money? Hardly. Should it modernize rooms and infrastructure? Absolutely.

I don't relish the idea of increased truck traffic, and there will be access problems. Likewise, the notion of going to all valet parking is equally foolhardy ... especially if the goal is to add another 80 rooms in the "new tower" over the "new convention facilities."

Were the Marriott designing something on 20 acres in the middle of no where, I'd encourage any scheme they could come up with. However, Collier is what it is. The drive up to the front door can barely accommodate vehicles two-wide, and there are days that get dicey under the current scheme where there isn't 100 percent valet service.

Then there are the homes backing up to the parking area ... there will be an impact ... we can claim "minimal" all day long, but the impact will still be there.

Libertarians normally say "mitts off" on government interference. But, we're also big on contracts. If the Marriott entered into an agreement, then the City of Marco is entitled to hold the Marriott to it. It could also amend the agreement, but that issue would hopefully be put before the voters. I think our island is great the way it is. I would vote "no."

Written on Obama: Income inequality a defining challenge :

How about an honest day's pay for an honest day's work?

Where Libertarians abhor the thought of wage dictation to employers, what hasn't been mentioned thus far is the corporate welfare that many employers receive when they pay "minimum wage" -- it's called Earned Income Tax credit. Those not receiving a living wage are subsidized by the tax payers (effectively raising their wages -- but employers are off the hook), so McDonalds, Home Depot, or Target (any stock traded company) gets a boosted bottom line because a portion of their employee wages is tax payer subsidized.

I also have a problem with those who come up with the "entry level job" line. Go to rural towns where a good employer is Dairy Queen or K-Mart, and people work there for 10 or 20 years. Not everyone is destined to be a brain surgeon, what's wrong with being the best shelf stocker or burger flipper? And, if that's the only game in town, at what point should longevity in the job approach someone receiving a living wage?

The only truth at the end of the day is that Federal govt intervention, whether it's dictating wages or secretly redistributing the wealth, is something to be avoided.

Written on The case for space: Marco Marriott details expansion proposal to public:

:-) ooooh, wit and sarcasm .... so much better than name calling. And, so I don't have to do it later, live and vote on Marco, live at the end of S. Collier, my wife and I ride bicycles up and down Collier almost daily when there. It's tough/dangerous enough. Constant users of Marriott facilities, and we think it's one of the nicest resorts we've seen around the globe. But, that's still not enough to pretend this expansion is somehow a good idea.

Written on Letter to the Editor: Who should yield? :

Yikes ... RayN asks to please use RayPray or RayP to set us apart. I thought the original topic was sidewalks and bicycles. Dog haters keep the faith, this just in from DC: "If you like your doggie, you can keep your doggie."

We all know what that means ........

Written on Letter to the Editor: Who should yield? :

Mr. Breeze ... you want to ride down Collier or San Marco in the street go for it. My wife and I will stick to the "Shared Use Paths."

I feel for the letter writer, we have bells on bikes that get overused, and one of us loudly announces "Passing on your left/right" -- I'm surprised by the number of bicycles lacking that little piece of equipment, or bikers who make no announcements but somehow expect a pedestrian to know that they are approaching. Kind of silly.

Now, in all fairness, let's pick on the walkers a little too. There are those wearing their iPods/phones, with headsets on, who are oblivious to bells, announcements, and perhaps even cars turning in behind them and about to mow them down.

Little common courtesy can go a long way. :o)

Written on Marco Island Police and Fire Pension Trustees hold joint session:

No!! Marco Island needs to get out of the defined benefit pension Ponzi scheme ASAP.

The city needs to move to defined contribution plans, where each employee "owns" his or her retirement account, and where he/she and the city can make monthly/annual contributions. Existing pension funds should be distributed to employees/retirees in a proportional or "earned" manner.

States and municipalities need to get their fiscal houses in order, and open ended, pension plans with virtually unlimited liabilities is insanity.

This should be the city's stand, and the next round of contract talks (public service unions -- another abomination) this change should be negotiated.

Written on Two-vehicle accident slows traffic in front of Marco Island Marriott:

Bondie .... please publicly announce when you'll be out on the road. Pedestrians, beware, even in a crosswalk -- you may be in someone's crosshairs. :o)

Written on Two-vehicle accident slows traffic in front of Marco Island Marriott:

In our great land of freedom and liberty, where we're told what light bulbs to buy, who we can marry, and that we have to have healthcare plans that don't apply to us (Klaus needs maternity care?) ... Libertarians, capitalists, and a whole bevy of folks who believe that government should free people and businesses to do what they want probably feel that Marriott should be able to do whatever it wishes.

Well, MICA and putt putt golf as an example, I believe in contracts, rule of law, and (shock) common sense. Marriott made an agreement, and there seems to be many more reasons to hold them to it, rather than allowing them the expansion they are seeking. That area is a fatal accident waiting to happen. Adding 80 more rooms, with their added traffic, and convention trucks, adds to the hazard -- doesn't decrease it. The notion that parking is going to go to all valet, is equally silly when one considers the traffic the entry ramp can handle. Big check-in days will have traffic backed up on Collier, and big check-out days will prove to be a headache for guests and the Marriott.

But, it isn't government's role to protect the Marriott from bad decision making. It is government's role to improve citizen safety ... and this accident offers some chances to perhaps slow the traffic down and address the visibility concerns.

Marco Island is paradise for those who LIVE here. The Marriott, as it stands today, is also a paradise for those who visit it. Renovate rooms, restaurants, spa, and meeting areas all you like ... but it is my hope that the City will stand by the agreement and not modify it for Marriott's benefit at the expense of residents and increase the hazards of driving or walking on Collier Blvd.

Written on City Council considers studies on Marco Island's post-employment compensation and Fire Station 50's renovations:

Marco Island MUST move from a defined benefits plan for any and all employees, to a defined contribution plan.

We can not become a "Detroit" or wind up like municipalities in CA. The time to make the change is NOW!!!!

Written on Cracking down: Marco Island Code Enforcement Board signals new 'get tough' attitude:

It's kind of ironic, two of the island's worst and dangerous side walks, on terms of upkeep and usability are where? 1. On Winterberry in front of the Collier County tax collector's building, and 2. On the corner of San Marco and Bald Eagle where the cross walk button is located on a pole, in a swale, far from the sidewalk. Enforcement on others is great, sidewalks should be passable without having to duck branches or being forced into the grass by overgrown shrubs ..... but, it would be nice if the "Enforcers" could set a good example.

Written on Congressman talks, and listens – Rep. Trey Radel appears before Marco Island's Caxambas Republican Club:

For the Marco Eagle and Naples News folks ... we're in District 19 not 14. Hope it wasn't Radel being quoted -- THAT would be a bad sign. :-)

Written on Putting out a contract: Marco Island police union, management work to negotiate new labor agreement:

Wow .... this chain of droning is going to get back on point?? Let's try again:

Actually, the whole thing is an abomination. Public service employees should be barred from "unionizing" period. In fact, unions in the US are literally dinosaurs. In the 1900's, especially early years, unions served many purposes for pay, benefits, safety, and pensions. But, the nanny state, locally, at state and Federal levels, now duplicates ... or has become the primary source for what unions once did. OSHA, Labor Departments, et cetera, provide workers and citizens with "protections."

Closer to home, pensions for the fire department and police departments, in fact all public pensions, should become "defined contribution" and move away from "defined benefit" -- we just can't afford bloated pensions with people retiring at 45 and living to 85. The city could do a generous match program on a 401K-like plan.

Written on Putting out a contract: Marco Island police union, management work to negotiate new labor agreement:

A8 ... don't understand your response. Marco Island should become a right to work city. It should deny any union recognition for its employees. It should change all pensions from defined benefit to defined contribution. How does this not apply??

RP ... hit the nail on the head. ODUMDUM's "dumbing down" of DC has been a phenominal success, whether one looks at the Supreme Court or his Cabinet. Quite shocking and scary. Just as scary are the idiots in Congress.

We need Tom Clancy's fiction to become a reality ... of course Joe Joe Shoot the Shotgun Biden ain't Jack Ryan. Sigh.

Written on Letter to the Editor: Remove MICA:

MICA may be a dinosaur, but even dinosaurs served a purpose, were part of the earth's circle of life. Right now MICA serves a purpose, there are no visible "extinction" events looming.

If anything, shouldn't we want growth on Marco Island to be slow and controlled?

I personally think the putt putt golf course would be a plus for residents, their families and guests, and yes even the "tourists". But, snubbing or trying an end run on MICA isn't appropriate. Hopefully the issue can be sorted out and that both sides don't "dig in" and waste time and $$ needlessly.

Sorry Jim, the tar pits for MICA are premature.

Written on Resolution supporting Second Amendment narrowly approved by Marco Council:

Well ...... David and Goliath comes to mind. It is a sad reflection on the real State of the Union that the incompetents in D.C. are nothing more than knee jerk panders.

We really need some changes to our criminal justice system ... armed robbery -- death penalty, violent crimes involving guns -- death penalty .... one appeal, sentence carried out within one year.

The kooks can only be stopped before hand largely by chance. But, armed citizenry doesn't only help prevent a Stalanistic or Hitlerian takeover by an out of control govt, it also provides a chance to stop a kook or criminal .... neither of which give a rat's hiney about whatever "gun control" laws get passed.

Written on Marco Island police and fire pensions exceed earnings expectations, assumptions remain on target :

Will we become CA or IL ... What controls are in place to keep Marco Island out of the proverbial fire? Are we defined benefit or defined contribution? Need to move to the latter if not already there. Employees and their pensions need to be like tax payers and benefit programs .... everyone needs to have some skin in the game ... healthcare benefits too.

Written on New Planning Board decides to reconsider parking ban near Marco Island's south beach :

Contact the city of Palm Beach .... not West Palm Beach.

They have residential parking decals, and it seems to work well for residents.

As for "parties" .... most condos have "guest" parking spots. For parties at homes, the decaled owner's cars get moved to the street and guests park in driveways. There probably needs to be the ability to get exemption permits on an individual basis.

We LOVE the decision that was made, don't kill it .... tweak it just a tad.

Written on Marco civic group sues to block miniature golf course approved by city officials :

To answer the blaring music question I can cite two places easily, Daytona Beach and Destin. And, the comment of noise traveling at night also has merit. Just because YOU have no experience with something doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

We don't want Marco to be a Daytona Beach, BUT some controlled growth is a good thing. For all of the tourists staying at the Hilton, Marriott, the timeshare places, and for residents (and their visiting family and friends) wouldn't it be nice to have lunch or dinner at Sasso's or across the street, and then walk a 100 yards and play a round of minature golf??

Horse poop, NO. Loud blaring noise, NO. But, quality of life improvements ... YES, if they make sense. Kramer and MICA need to get together and approve this project instead of acting like idiots, and I can also see where Kramer should be sanctioned (read that pay some bucks) for having tried to do an end run on MICA.

Written on Connecticut man dies after being pulled from Marco Island lake:

"Clinging to our guns and bibles" ... gee, the first part makes sense, but not the second. Apparently "the big guy" didn't deem someone worthy of being able to walk on water ... no grace, no blessings. It remains a sad thing for the family, but invoking "the Great Pumpkin" to somehow make things okay is mysticism. Which, helps explain why the world is such a freaking mess. It will remain interesting to see what Marco Island's "response" to this attractive nuisance is going to be.

Written on Connecticut man dies after being pulled from Marco Island lake:

Sad. Well, let's see .... summon the trial attorneys, fence off the lake, demolish the little boat dock, put up at least 100 warning signs five feet apart, and hire a couple of guards to yell at people who get within 10 feet of the fence or walk on the grass instead of the path. That should fix the problem.

Written on Marco civic group sues to block miniature golf course approved by city officials :

"Ignoring" the other side isn't a good idea. But, a stop work injunction should have been filed months and months ago. Construction has been ongoing a long time. I can see the future noise complaints .... mini golf courses for some unknown reason play background annoying music at a billion decibels .... that CAN NOT be tolerated at this location.
