I would assume the same fools that will be asked to pay for two new bridges they don't need.
Want to find alternative money fast? Do what every other community and government entitity does during times of cutbacks, reduce personnel, expenditures and fire all the planners! Give Rony Joel the same cut that the city received from the State. Lets see if Rony is as good at managing money as he is at convincing the Politicos that he always needs more of it. Another good way is to ban spending promoters Minozzi and Arceri from City Hall.
"The future of mainland access to Marco Island could come down to a vote by its residents." Good idea, why did it have to come from someone living off the island? Mr. Cann states "total replacement would be more prudent than large-scale repairs". What does he mean by "more prudent". Does he mean that we can get a new two span bridge that will last 100 years for less than the cost of repairing the existing structure to last only 40 addtional years? Or does he mean it would be a bargain to replace it with two new spans today? Does anybody care if this is even necessary? “If the bridge is in good shape, but you want to add capacity to the other end, why would you want to replace something that’s working?” asked Collier County Commission Chairman Tom Henning, a member of the MPO board. Good question. All Planner Brandy Otero could come up with was a response based on projections. Then he makes a declatory statement that utilizing the Goodland Bridge during temporary shutdown of the Jolly Bridge is “not a viable option”. Because it is only rated at a 45. Why is temporary use not viable? Is the Goodland Bridge in danger of falling down? Trucks use it every day. Why do elected officials allow staff to make declartory statements without challenge or explanation?
Beowulf, that be me. I believe MarcoFacts has just extended both of us a compliment. MarcoFacts, why is it your rarely have any "facts"?
Marcoite, you have made a very good positive suggestion. The Eagle should investigate this and write an article so that ALL may fully understand what the actual costs may be. This type of reporting would be a great service to our community. I suggest that the reporter be permitted to consult with an accountant to verify the accuracy and methods of calculating deferred costs. We do not want the reporter and the paper to be accused of accepting what the City says without consulting a professional number cruncher, do we? After all, verification of news stories is part of what a newspaper should do. This information would be a tremendous value to all citizens of our city.
Verodicus, I'm still here and I still care about this community. dc5799 I would also like to know who the conduit is. Someone initiated this idea and facilitated the conversation. We now know that at least three Councilmembers have given lip service to it, so they must have been approached by someone. Who is driving the bus? Let's be accountable, we have an attorney serving on the Council, we have a City attorney, surely one of them remains ethical enough to let us know how close we are to again violating sunshine laws. C'mon, lets be grown up and fess up.
"LCEC officials, who hadn’t heard anything from Marco Island leaders about taking over the utility...." Feel blindsided? These back room deals are obviously still going on. Who is acting as the conduit? This idea did not evolve, without prior discussion. Problem is - that discussion did not occur in an open public meeting. Is this what the new Council meant when they said they would be more open with the public? Unlike the majority of our electorate, I voted for change. Don't blame me for what they are about to do to YOU.
Joel's goal is the property on Elkam Circle. He will push for the South Plant and Veteran's Park site until the Council comes to believe that his initial request was the right one. The Council has to see that the 1 million dollar price tag is the only way out of this mess.. Rony is an exceptional manipulator. The one million dollars that was left on the table when the last Council departed is about to be given to Rony.
This bridge is owned by the State of Florida not Collier County. Has the State of Florida made known it's interest in replacing this birdge? If so, when and why? Why is Collier County interested in it's replacment or expansion? The Cambridge Systematics study does not recommend replacement or expansion at this time. Marco Island is near build-out and unless beach access and beach parking has been improved, little or no increase in traffic should occur. The Jolley Bridge principally serves the municipality of Marco Island, why are ALL county residents being surveyed? Has Marco Island decided to open it's beaches to all county residents? When did the county ask it's residents permission to utilize county funds to pay for this survey? If a new larger four lane bridge is built, how will the increased speed and increased traffic impact flow on the Marco Island side of Collier Blvd.? Is the City planning on removing all the new signal lights it just installed at each intersection? If a larger bridge is built, how many of our homes will have to be torn down to accomodate this project? At what cost? This newspaper has a responsibility to our community to answer these questions.
A property owner says: "the “new” bridge (which is currently slated to not even start until somewhere between 2026 and 2030) isn’t going to be running through the middle of the house. The eventual bridge will occupy the Marco Island Yacht Club side of the street." Sounds like decisions have been made. Why is the MPO going through all this survey crap? To document public input for already approved plans? Sounds to me like this rich guy already knows whats coming down the pike. Get your wallets our Marco Islanders, we are about to get robbed again.

Marcofacts; will this never end? It seems that we who lost the election have tried to be gracious in defeat for the most part. Why do you feel a need to bring up these old posts? To continue the battle? Why not try and be consilitory and rise above all this. We can work together to make Marco Island a peaceful place again. Just stop the confrontational posturing and join with your neighbors. If you keep this up, I'm afraid this discussion will be neverending and result in only further harming people.
Loauralbi1, Mr. Columbo was not comparing the people of Marco Island to the citizens of Nazi Germany. That said, your submission was written like a true propagandist. You have just provided us with an excellent example of the point Mr. Columbo made. “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it." Guess which historical figure made those observations?
Mr. Moss states "In retrospect, a referendum on this issue may have resolved the matter and then allowed other equally important matters to surface in the political forum." This is the message the opponents were trying to convey to our elected officials for two years! Unfortunately, the majority of those officials had made up their minds, were resolved to impose their will and refused to even respond to those who questioned them. The residents of this community being impacted by this behavior believed they had been blind-sided, that their elected representitives were being unfair and nonresponsive. What in the world were these people thinking? An email written by former Councilman John Arceri revealed that he personally believed that the assessment process for the STRP was "too complicated" for our citizens to understand and any attempt at explaining it to them should be avoided. Councilman Minozzi once stated that "the train had already left the station", as if to imply further debate would serve no purpose. Councilman Tucker reversed his opposition to the STRP without any justification immediately following an election in which two anit-sewer candidates threatened it's continuence. The STRP NEVER had consensus on the Council. Residents of single family homes being impacted by the STRP, represented a minority that were NEVER GIVEN A JUSTIFICATION and many of whom believed they were being asked to pay for a new sewer plant that those on the old sewer and the condos and hotels had wore out. If only consent had been sought two years ago, we could have had an open debate, found a way to make this work and avoided all the acrimony and additional expense. I sincerly hope that the new council learns from Mr. Moss's very accurate observation, good government is a transparent government that seeks consent from all it's citizens. Being aloof and holding minority consitituents at arms length leads only to turmoil in a Democracy.
Then you haven't been listening. If you vote for Batte, Hall, Neylon and Guidry and live on a street with a pipe in it - you may elect to stay with your on site system if it is in good shape. Or you may hook up for the same cost that everybody else on the island did, approximately 7,000 dollars. Further they will reduce your utility fees. If you vote for the other guys you will be forced to destroy perfectly good safe systems, hook up to the sewer, pay 20,000 dollars in assessments and monthly service fees. If Recter, Gibson, Waldack and Trotter are elected they will spend an additional 100 million dollars and pay for it on the backs of residents and property owners via increased utility fees. Your choice, your money, your last chance to take control and stop the spending. Vote for Batte, Hall, Neylon and Guidry or pay!
Don Farmer, who made you the decider of what our future should be? Why didn't you have the courage to run for office yourself? You would do better to interview the candidates you support and ask them what ideas and plans they have for Marco Island. What will they do for the taxpayers and property owners? Batte, Hall, Guidry and Neylon have put forward several solutions to our problems and also advanced some new ideas to improve our governance. What will the bartender or failed real estate investor do for us? For that matter, ask your attorney friend what it is he plans for moving our city into the future. We already know what Trotter wants, we watched him spend our tax money irresponsibly for four years now and we also saw that he favors ruling in the manner of Fidel Castro. We don't need you to interview him. Please try and get your other three frineds to stop their negative attacks and give us some idea of just what it is they have planned for us.
This is simple. Elect Rector, Gibson, Waldack and Troter if you want to pay an assessment of 20,000 dollars and increased utility fees. Vote for Batte, Neylon, Hall and Guidry if you would rather pay an impact fee of 7,000 dollars and decreased utlity fees. It's your money. Give it to a government that believes in spending or keep it to yourself and maybe go on a cruise. As for Neylon's new plans taking years to get approved. So what? Is something happening on Marco Island in the short term John Arceri and his fear mongers have not told us? Probably that if the sewers are not completed he and his big invester friends will loose out on a lot of money building those mixed use condos. It's your money people. Do with it as you like. Time to decide.
Issler, still telling your fibs I see. I will hold you to your promise to support the Council "whoever is on it". You should consider voting for a new type of government. One that represents the "people" and doesn't deliberately shut them out. A government that is transparent and does not hold meetings in back rooms without the press present. A government that respects the will of the "people" and seeks out their consent. If you want that sort of government vote for Batte, Hall, Guidry and Neylon. If you want the kind of government that Mr. Trotter represents, one that rules and decides what is good for the "people" without accepting their input then move to Cuba.
jc, how do you know they are not working well or leaking? Because Mr. Tears says so? I need more proof then that. Real science is based on proof positive not comparisons of similar but not exact models or personal opinions based on experience and certianly not on conventional wisdom. We have been lied to by officials in our city and some of these agencies many times in the past. Why should I believe anything they say without actual testing of our waterways or inspections of our septic tanks?
Soloman, I suppose you would also say that Clinton was never impeached? Trotter was recalled by all who signed the petition. The effort failed. Failure of an impeachment or recall process does not imply a lack of justification, just the contrary. Otherwise, it would never have happened. Live with it, 2,000 plus citizens did not think Trotter deserved to sit on our City Council and sought to have him removed.
It is really amazing that Monte Lazerus would write such an article. He is the pot calling the kettle black. The only false accusations I have ever read in these blogs come from those who wish to defend the expansion of our utilities, the Celebrate Marco crowd of realtors, investors, cooperate managers and business community. I wonder how much money Monete Lazarus, John Arceri and Craig Woodward have invested in these last remaining commercial sites along the sewer expansion route? Too bad they will have to wait a few more years before they can reap their profits. Vote for Batte, Hall, Guidry and Neylon if you want to halt growth and inhibit these people from making large profits off the backs of our residents.
Soloman, propaganda based on false premises or projecting doom and gloom as you are doing is still propaganda. Items 3 through 11 will never happen. What will happen is our citizens will not be burdned with another 130 million dollars in unnessary expenditures. We will not have to tear up another 42 more miles of our neighborhood's streets. Our citizens who have a sewer pipe outside their home may hook up if they want to and those that have safe onsite systems will have the choice to not hook up. Our residents will be able to participate in their government and halt the unnessary spending spree. Our utility rates will not be increased but rolled back! The increase in reuse water production will permit more reuse water to be brought to our neighborhoods allowing our drinking water to be conserved. The City will have a proactive on site monitoring system that will protect our waterways (something we do not have now)and we will have effectively halted growth. Think about it. Only necessary construction, little dust, peace and quite for a change. No more condos threatening to be built in our neighborhoods. A community that can support itself with existing infrastructure. You need to seriously reconsider your priorities and vote for change, vote for Batte, Hall, Neylon and Guidry if you want to give our people the quality of life they deserve. I like my positive view better then your negative view. I think Jerry Gibson had it right, be positive Soloman, think only good thoughts.
This editorial arrives at conclusions based on non-existing premises. The good doctor guarded her considered opinion with the thought that septic systems required good maintenance. True enough. As Marco Island officials have only reported two septic failures in two years time, one can easily assume good maintenance is being practiced by those on septic systems. She also states that systems may not have the two-foot separation from the water table. "May not", that is not a scientific statement but one full of guess work. Drainage fields better have more than two feet of clearance because if they don't the homes affected were built at one foot elevations which we know to not be the case because we can purchase flood insurance. Also, that is a requirement of the permitting process. She also states that sewers are managed by professionals. I don't doubt that. But explain to us why sewers are the second largest cause of beach closures in coastal regions? It is further stated that septics do not treat nutrients. True enough, but then again the number one cause of red tide is the nutrients from agriculture, not septic tanks. Now here is the one I like the best: “The impact of the current septic systems being used on an island in close proximity with surface and groundwater sources has caused water quality degradation in and around the island.” What statistical data shows this to be true? When a scientist states a fact, they had better be prepared to back it up. The proof must relate specifically to Marco Island, because the writer refers to the "island". Here is another one: "There is little or no current peer-reviewed, scientific data to support septic systems as viable alternatives within the environmental confines of Southwest Florida’s coastal regions." It can also be said that there is little or no current peerreviewed , scientific data to support the statement that septic systems are causing ANY cantamination of MARCO ISLAND waterways. If there is show it to us. It is clear that the pro-growth supporters like the writer are spreading what amounts to propaganda to advance thier money driven desire to expand infrastructure. They want our island to be full of hotels, timeshares and condos. They have invested a lot of their capital in this island, and they are fighting hard to maintain control so that they may protect those investments. Give our island back to the residents and those who wish to only live here in peace. Vote for change, vote for Batte, Hall, Guidry and Neylon.
The candidates that voted NO for questions 2, 7 and 8 are the only candidates that thought about the questions prior to responding. Or, they responded as their sponsors directed them to. Question 2, the only logical response is NO when one considers that this utility expansion was built with no proven justification. Why should residents be required to hook up to something they do not need? The only known purpose of forcing residents to hook up is to ensure that growth on Marco Island may continue. Who in their right mind other then those investors who own commercial property without access to a sewer line wants to see or vote for mixed use condos on Bald Eagle, North Barfield and San Marco? Question 7, you have to be blind and deaf to not believe our city has been on a spending spree for the last two years. Time to control and reduce spending so that our middle class can remain here. A NO vote will inhibit unbridled growth designed only to pay off investors and slow down construction. Question 8, This is just another scheme to subvert the CAP. It will result in increased taxes during it's second year. No tax break here, just more revenue to spend. It also will reduce the amount of money one can deduct from their federal taxes. Federal tax deductions of state taxes are really an indirect subsidy of our city's expenditures. Who in their right mind would vote other than NO and volunteer to pay more taxes?
Anyone that wants to run for public office should have the common curtesy to respond to the electorate's questions. All of the candidates were invited and all except Recker accepted more then a month before the event. The event was advertised in the newspaper and the format was given to each of them. The newspaper even outlined the format. I think that Trotter, who has missed three of these events has a lot to hide and cannot defend his first term as Councilman. The other two appear to be as arrogant as their sponsors. The people representing those who failed to attend want only to protect their investments on our island. They want growth as Jerry Gibson admitted twice. They need to expand our infrastructure to support more hotels, timeshares and condos. Vote for Batte, Hall, Guidry and Neylon if you want to stop all this spending and building on the island.
Soloman, Tarik does sell retreads. You should try and be more honest or at least more knowledgable about those you defend. He ships them overseas to third world countries. Go to his website at http://www.taray.com/management.html and click on the first item on the column on the left hand side of the page. My point was that his interests lie clearly with Marco Island's commercial community. His membership and participation in the organizations you site prove where his special interests lie. As for having lived in Marco Island for any length of time, we have had that kind of representation. Just look at the mess the last two Council's made. It's time for some fresh blood. My comments were not vile *you should look at your garbage referral. That said, I do agree with you, if the candidates I support are successful, we will get the government I and everyone else on Marco Island deserves. A government that is transparent, honest, up front and one that values the input of it's citizens. A government that asks questions and listens to the responses of the community it serves. A government that leans more to the needs of our residents and less to those who wish to make money off of them. A government that wants to preserve our beutiful island as a residential community free of outside commercial influences. A government that is representative and excludes no one. Imagine that Soloman, Marco Island being run by it's citizens and not ruled by a small group of big businessman and worman. That would be a good thing for all of us. Vote for Batte, Guidry, Hall and Neylon if you have the same vision I do.
More multi-family units where none existed previously. If you had any doubt as to why the STRP is necessary this article is the harbringer of the the mixed-use wave about to hit our community. Soon there will be an announcement about another one on North Barfield. Without the STRP this would not be possible. Thank you John Arceri for your farsightedness. Our community would have stagnated as a small town residential retirement community without you.
Mr. and Mrs. Povlow are New Jersey real estate agents. They have a very special interest in promoting sewers on Marco Island. Increased density means more condos and larger homes. A gold mine for developers and real estate agents. If they get their way, look forward to more development and more middle class folks leaving Marco Island.
So much to address in this article. First of all, any applicant that applies for this job has to know that four candidates will not consider any of them if the current council setz the tone. Second, Bill Moss's selection by the City of Naples was not the result of a search by the Mercer Group. Bill Moss applied for the job on the last possible day and the Mercer Group had already completed it's search. Moss was a spoiler for all the candidates that sought employment via the Mercer Group. Third, Joel's recommendation for to purchase additional property for the plant is consistant with the way Bill Moss used to lead this Council. Joel is now attempting to lead the Council in spending another 1 million dollars for property he had previously assurred the council would not be needed. Fourth, 1 million dollars for this property is way over it's "reality" value. The only buyer for this property for the next two years will be the City of Marco Island. It is a dump adjoining an industrial complex. Fifth, the purpose of forming the "rental committee" was to appease resedential owners who were complaining about property owners not monitoring their rental contracts with real estate agents. So why are there not more of these property owners represented on the committee? Why are there so many real estate personalities being considered? Why is the Chamber of Commerce getting a seat? What in the world does the restaurant association have to do with a property owner that allows two or three families to live under the roof of one single family home? Last but not least, why is Tarik Ayasun, a retread tire salesman sitting on this committee? It is well known throughout Marco Island that Tarik is a strong supporter of growth, real estate and commercial interests on the island. Can't this Council just look at all the faces sitting out in the audience of the Council Chambers and see that their decisions are being questioned? Vote for Change, vote for Batte, Hall, Guidry and Neylon. Vote for to give our city back to the residents and our community.
sailor, you keep bringing out the same old stuff. This fellow Iglehart is the same fellow that acted so slow in giving the city direction on how to handle asbestos? Isn't he the same fellow that offerred up his assistant to help Moss with his Public Affairs issues? Isn't he the same fellow that told Hall he would never force any community to stop using on-site systems without a proven need? Is he the same fellow that approved some generic permit to dump contaminated ground water into our water ways? Is he the same fellow that the water conservancy folks disobeyed when they issued the stop desist order to our City? Is he the same fellow that the Federal EPA ignored and bypassed when they issued a summons to our City and ordered them to stop the dewatering process? He sounds like a political appointee to me. His interests surely don't sound compatible with good ecology. I know, it's all about progress isn't it? We need sewers to serve higher density and the more people we can attract to SWF the better for the waterways, our fish, our drinking water acquifiers, the sea, the Everglades, the air we breath and the condo builders, the free-way builders, the airports, the real estate community, the hotel owners, the politicians, the growing of local governments and revenues, the Chamber of Commerce, the sewer industry, etc. We are not that stupid Sailor. Get ready for change, we know what's going on and the trend is the same all over SWF. Vote for Batte, Hall, Guidry and Neylon if you love Marco Island and want to keep it's waterways clean.
Semper, you are now speaking to many more than the few Celebrate Marco crowd you run around with. Keep going after the majority like you did in the above post and you will ensure Batte, Hall, Guidry and Neylon win this election. Your own words buttess their positions. The words you use and the points you attempt to make actually work against you. I know it is tough to defend the actions of our prior council, especially since their actions have negatively impacted so many of us. Unless your candidates are willing to put money back in our pockets and roll back utility costs, your defense falls on deaf ears. Sailor, please let us know what office Godfrey Davis is running for? Not that I care, but shouldn't you and the rest of the Celebrate Marco crew be directing your comments to those who you will have to contend with in the very near future?
I'd say after reading her previous posts, that Ms. Beth Povlow has been a long time supporter of John Arceri's effort to sewer the entire island. What I'm puzzeled about his her lack of candor. Is she somehow ashamed to simply say she has always been a sewer supporter? And why the drama about Mr. Neylon's revelations? Is she trying to be deceitful and put herself out there as simply a regular citizen that never had an opinion one way or the other? If that's so, then the links above expose her as being a dishonest writer at the least.
What about the asbestos mishap? What about the release of hydrogen sulfide gas in our residential areas? What about the pumping of ground water directly into our waterways in violation of State and Federal law? I guess stories concerning public health and our enviornment are not considered "top stories" of any interest to Marco Islanders. As for the upcoming election references, please don't insult our intelligence by implying that this heavily contested election is due only to the controversial sewer. There are many other issues being contested in this election that indicate the electorate seeks fundamental change in the way we are being governed.
Marcofacts, what factual basis do you have for making the statment that the State intends to force Marco Island to complete the STRP? Now is your chance to come clean.
And what about the downturn in real estate sales? When did that start and end? Or how about the Miami mortgage violations that may yet implicate some of our most important leaders and volunteers in our community. 15 properties on Marco Island were involved. Not important stories? Or are we somehow trying to avoid embarrassing the commercial side of our community?
Sailingby, if Kiester was a "weak link" what do you call all the folks who voted for him? Unlike Councilman Minozzi, Councilman Kiester actually won a political election he didn't take his seat by default. Calling the enviornmental supporters of CARES and the 2,000 or more citizens that signed recall petitions power hungry would make Thomas Jefferson roll over in his grave. The voters are participating in something called Democracy. I'm honored to know Godfrey Davis, unlike John Arceri and Monte Lazarus he believes in majority rule and that is what he is trying to achieve. If you want to give our hometown back to it's residents vote for Batte, Hall, Guidry and Neylon. If you want to continue with higher taxes, higher utility fees and arrogant rule by folks who believe they know what is good for us and believe the voters are "weak links" vote for all the rest.
So what Councilman Tucker is saying is that; to not take action, may be considered an action in the affirmative? Is that like a hearing impaired suspect's lack of response to a policeman's questions, may be considered a positive response to the commission of a crime? Good grief, lawyers. Also, if this is the way this council chooses to function then why do they keep reviewing and approving new sewer districts? Didn't they give direction to the City Staff two years ago? Shouldn't the City Staff be expected to just run with it, hell with the cost. Why does the Counsel even meet? When is leadership exercised? Mr. Tucker, you clearly are one that avoids individual responsiblity, why do you even bother attending City Council Meetings for that matter?
PetePan, you really sound desperate. No wonder, you ignore the real reasons your friends will never win the election. Here are few of them again in case you missed them the first time:
It doesn't take a genius to realize that the same lies and misinformation come from the same people and the same place.
Remember the "fecal coliform in the canals" Remember "there's no asbestos contamination" Remember "the asbestos shards are being planted"Remember "we have photographic evidence"Remember the "Glon city park" purchaseRemember the "hydrogen sulfide is only an occasional nuisance" Remember the "Jolly Bridge is falling down", Remember " lets extend our terms in office by eight months"
The above lies all cost our city and the county millions of dollars. 27year,I won't give you the satisfaction of commenting on your so called facts. They have all been dealt with here previuosly. You repeating them does not make them any more true.
To the PetePan, Soloman, 27year, Montel and all the rest of John Arceri's propaganda team. You guys just don't get it do you? It's not about the STRP, it's not about the costs imposed upon our citizens, it's not about any of the things you use to try and divert the attention of the voters. What it is about is the three years of arrogant rule, the lies and deciet. The unwillingness to allow our citizens to share in their governance. The making of special assessments without a referendum. The irresponsible utility decsions. The budget shuffels of our revenue. The lack of individual personal accountability, the lack of attention to detail, the inablity to supervise and give direction. The total incompetance of four members of our city Council. Our citizens simply want CHANGE. That's what it is about and that is why we are going to vote for Hall, Batte, Guidry and Neylon. We have had it with your excuses and your special interests and your unbalanced attention to the commercial interests of our community. You can say whatever you like and attack our candidates on a personal level, but you can never defend the four majority members of our council that have brought us to this election. Their actions and behavior is undefensible. So keep slinging your mud, we know what we must do and we will do it.
27 year. The city has little if any credibility remaining. Our citizens have been lied to by our city government so many times that this report simply represents more of the same. Ask an expert anything you want as long as you are paying he will be happy to give you the response you seek. That's what is going on here. Vote for change, stop the spending spree and throw the bums out.
27- The misinformation is contained in the report. You wouldn't have an interest in the company that prepared this report would you? The people of this city are tired of the lies. The City government has been working this scam for too long and it is time for change. Our citizens are about to shut down your cash cow. Chuck Kiester sits on the Council, you do not. His view of what is going on is far more valid then yours. What John Arceri is doing is promoting electioneering communications. As an Officer of Celebrate Marco he should review that organization's by laws before he continues spending CM's funds for this purpose. The fines imposed by the FEC are greater than those that Councilman Kiester will have to pay for deleting emails on his personal computer at home. The violaitons of law are also greater.
Montel, slow down and read the posts that Lolala submitted and you will see that only opinions were related. I believe you were referring to my posts. So I will give you some facts. Facts that you are sure to ignore. Comparing the Keys with Marco Island is comparing apples and oranges. The Federal government, not the State forced the Keys to convert to sewers. Why? Because the on sight waste treatment systems they used were polluting the waterways. Why? Because they were using cesspools that were built without bottems. Yes, the cesspools were built directly on the limestone bedrock because at the time it was believed the limestone could hold the waste until it was time to pump it out. Yes, the thinking was old, old as an outhouse, but so are the Florida Keys. People have been living there continusly for thousands of years. It wasn't until density increased that they had a problem. They discovered that limestone is not a good filter and permits contaminents to flow directly into the aquafier and the sea. Now lets look at Marco Island. Marco Island does not sit on limestone. Marco Island is not part of the Continetal shelf of Florida. Marco Island is a sand bar that was enhanced by a developer. Marco Island has 12 to 18 feet of sand and mangrove decaying material lying under the surface. Marco Island's modern septic tanks are not polluting our waterways. Why? Because a septic tank is designed to hold it's contents in a vault and only releases effluent. Effluent requires only three feet of sand to filter through before it is clean. Now why won't the Feds force us to convert to sewers? Because there is no pollution. Facts actually mean something.
Sounds to me like there are a whole lot more snakes in this bag then the City Attorney thought. But I'll bet he won't give the City a refund.
"...one of the greatest benefits of Thursday’s forum was it gave residents a chance to steer topics toward the issues that matter to them". Excellent observation. Candidate Recter also pointed out the current lack of interest by our present leaders when he stated: "The council now, you can’t have a dialogue." Hopefully the new council will remember the positive sharing of views this forum provided. This event was a celebration of democracy and our community should be proud of the interest we all showed. If only Councilman Tucker, Trotter, Popoff and Minozzi would have had a few open forums with our constitutents prior to taking actions that negatively impacted our quality of life. Then perhaps all the diversity could have been avoided. Talking works. Hopefully Mr. Gibson and Mr. Waldack now understand that there are many people on this island that are not within their circle of friends and that they too have ligitimate concerns. Trotter has now missed two great opportunities to interact with the public, perhaps he has too much to answer for. Thank you MITA for giving us a great opportunity to meet with these candidates.
I just want MICA to be honest about their purpose. If they have decided to be a political agent then they should register as one, for that matter so should Celebrate Marco. I am a full member of MICA. I have never seen the responses to these questions posed by MICA to the candidates. I asked the other candidates and they had not seen them either. The media has not published them. My neighbors who are also full-time voting members of MICA have not seen them. You guys will do anything to win won't you? Cheating, lies and misrepresentations will gain you few votes and change even fewer minds.
What are you saying Montel? That Williams is the lap dog of CM? Are you trying to say that what goes around comes around? If so you are simply validating my analysis of CM' debate and the bias of this paper. Welcome abord.
One area in which this debate did not follow the first. This one lacked the integrity and fairness of the first. The reporter obviously didn't notice Trotter, Gibson and Waldack reading prepared responses to questions asked by the moderator. She also didn't notice that the moderator would not permit more than two members of the anti-sewer group to ask audience questions, yet he permitted five (5) Celebrate Marco members to read 5 prepared questions addressed only to anti-sewer candidates. However, the most newsworthy item was that Celebrate Marco prepared the majority of their questions based on survey responses to questions posed previously to all the candidates by MICA. MICA claims to be an unbiased civic organization that is non-political. None of these questions and responses were provided to Neylon, Hall, Guidry or Batte prior to the debate. Nor were they published in any media or read by the general membership. Why is that? Did MICA intend to give Celebrate Marco an advantage to it's candidates and not to the others? Looks like it to me. I think it's time to take a hard look at MICA's tax status and it's board of governors. This selective and early release of information for political purposes shows their obvious political bias. Or did Bev Trotter, the wife of Candidate Trotter and an employee of MICA give the responses without appropriate authority to Celebrate Marco? It matters not to me. I will reconsider my membership in MICA next year and I as a full member will vote accordingly to replace the current political stewards serving that organization.
Butch your above posting proves you are a very qualified candidate for City Council. A candidate that cares enough about issues to study them and report your findings to the public you wish to serve. If Minozzi had any real excutive experience he would have fired Joel and Moss when he first became the Chairman. Instead he makes statements like "I trust my engineers" even though those very engineers failed to tell him our bridges should have a higher priority then Collier Blvd.
First the Fire Department, then the Recreation Department, followed by the Beutification Department. How much of our budget currently being paid from taxes is going to shift to an assessment? Isn't this the same as simply moving money out from under the CAP so that the City can INCREASE our TAXES simply by calling them assessments? Once they become assessments there is no instrument remaining to hold down spending in these areas. If you believe in the CAP, don't support this effort to undermine it.
Now if we can just get rid of the other big spenders, our City will be able to get back on it's feet. If you are tired of all the construction, great mounds of dirt, dust and dump trucks tearing up our bridges and roads, vote for CHANGE. Vote for four of the following Allen, Batte, Guidry, Hall and Neylon each an advocate of our residents and not the developers and builders.
