Written on Local golf pro Dave Bierbrauer dies at 58:

I will always appreciate Disco for his support of my son not just as his golf instructor but as his friend. He is a better golfer and person for knowing Disco. RIP Dave.

Written on Marco Island Academy makes Raymond first AD:

25 years:

Although our opinions differ about the need for a charter high school, I agree 100% about Roger. There is no one who puts in more time and energy to the youth of Marco than Roger.

Written on Marco YMCA, high school venture to share land:

Ed, you really are an idiot. This is from the story above. '“We discussed the issue with MICA and they have been fully supportive and have confirmed that our land will support an educational facility,” said Love'

Written on Letters to the Editor Ticketing softball fans:

I would be happy to talk, just tell me when.

Written on Letters to the Editor Ticketing softball fans:

Thank you MIPD. I have asked for several years for them to start enforcing the illegal parking around Winterberry Field. It is a safety issue for people walking/running on the sidewalk and bicyclists using the bike lane. If you cannot walk the 50 feet from the legal parking lot you should not be playing softball.

Written on VIDEO&PHOTOS/Marco bridge: Jolley family endorses bridge expansion; asks that name remain:

Fossil: They did not name the council room after Mr. Tucker. They named City Hall after him. Here is the quote of the motion from the city meeting minutes.

“MOTION by Councilor Gibson to recognize the contributions of Mr. E. Glenn Tucker and name City Hall after him in honor of his contributions to the City.”

Written on Charter school officials find themselves on the defensive :

Mr. Putnam:
Your frustration with the amount paid in school taxes is understandable, but I believe misguided. Most of the money collected by Collier County is sent to the State of Florida and redistributed throughout the state. I admit I do not know the exact numbers, but a lot of what we pay does not stay here in Collier. We are paying for school children in the less affluent areas of Florida. The minimum mileage rate is set by the state in order for them to redistribute our wealth.

Written on Weekly rentals: Hotels from hell next door or angel to ailing economy?:

A little defensive aren't we Breeze. My comment had nothing to do with you or your posts. I was referring to those that made posts about post 36 which is obviously a sarcastic post and not truth. Your personal attack using "low life" is not necessary. You are on Marco now, learn to relax.

Written on Weekly rentals: Hotels from hell next door or angel to ailing economy?:

Some people may want to look up sarcasm in the dictionary.

Written on VIDEO/PHOTOS: Marco residents oppose Collier school district’s alternative energy plan for vacant land:

I accept the criticism. I did that one in a hurry and did not spell check. However, those in glass houses should not throw stones. You may want to check your grammar and spell check yourself. Not that it matters, but I do not teach computer lab, I am a Librarian at Lely.

Written on VIDEO/PHOTOS: Marco residents oppose Collier school district’s alternative energy plan for vacant land:

25- Yes I am. Not only am I a teacher at Lely, I am also a Marco resident for 19 years, a father of a Marco teenager and a coach for the MICMS. I am not affraid of my opionions and I am not affraid to hide behind a generic username. May I ask who you are? I honestly believe that the student that wants to get a great education at Lely can and do get one. As stated, I have worked at many of the local high schools in one capacity or another. I know what they all offer. If I did not care about the school and its students I would not be there. I chose to work at Lely from another high school.
Voice, No, I have not talked about this with any student, here or at school. You say you have a tenager so you know they are very opionionated and do not need someone to tell them to speak their mind.
You both may notice, I did not give my opionion about whether there should be a high school on the island. I only gave my opionion that is contrary to some of the things 25 said about the students from East Naples and Lely.
There are many great students and parents on Marco that I work with everyday. But, I stand by my drug remarks. There are some parents that bury there heads in the sand and there is a drug and alchohol problem on this island. It has been there for many years. Be thankfull your child is not involved and has not been around those that are involved, but that does not mean it does not exsist.

Written on VIDEO/PHOTOS: Marco residents oppose Collier school district’s alternative energy plan for vacant land:

Your prejudice is shining through. Just be honest and say you do not want your child to be near the Hispanic and black kids. Your argument for a high school is that your kids are around bad people from East Naples. I know many amazing students and parents that live in the manor. They are not there by choice, but circumstance. I also know a few less than positive role models that live on Marco. There is a drug and alcohol problem with many teenagers on Marco that has nothing to do with the kids from East Naples. They have the funds to get it and many parents that turn a blind eye to what their children are doing with a “Not my child” attitude. There were more fights and drug arrests at Gulf Coast when I was there than there are at Lely and that is a school some Marco kids are going to. There are also many role models at Lely and not all are from Marco.
Lely did not get rid of guidance councilors; Dr. Thompson cut the counselors district wide at all levels. All the high school lost councilors. The ratio of student-councilor is the same at all the high school. Some may have 1 or 2 more at the school only because the student population is larger.
My sons FCAT scores have gone down every year at the charter school even while he is an A student there. Do I think they are failing him? No. Determining the whole education experience on a school grade based on 1 test is short sided at best. I have worked at Naples, Barron, and Gulf Coast and can say that the curriculum, teaching methods and teaching effort is equal at Lely to all those schools.
If you have specific problems with the education your daughter is receiving, if you have not already, go talk to the administration. Yell and scream until the issues are fixed. Go to the SAC meetings and tell them your issues. They are parents like you trying to make Lely a better place. I can see why your kids would hate to go to Lely listening to your bash it all the time. Parents need to be part of the solution not create more problems.

Written on Water: What you pay depends on where you live:

The city purchased the water because we were being ripped off by SSU as the cash cow to cover their less affluent communities. But, we still pay 15-30% more that most of our neighbors. It looks like we are now the cash cow for the City of Marco. Plus they also want to raise taxes according to another article. Those of us still under the hill and working for a living cannot last much longer.

Written on Former Marco Island City Councilman Glenn Tucker applies for city attorney job:

Tucker headed the group that recomended the law firm with the travel expense knowing he only had a few months left, now he comes in with a lower bid when he is off the council and those he backed are on it? Sounds like a set up to me. Do these people think we are all s-----?

Written on New resolution to allow dogs in Marco parks ready to be unleashed:

"dogs will still be prohibited from all city playgrounds... athletic fields."
Winterberry Park is one large athletic field, it is not just the ball field. The entire grass area is used by the YMCA for soccer, flag football, and more, as well as the Baptist Church youth groups on Wednesdays. Kids spend alot of time rolling in this grass. Any area that hosts youth activities should be prohibited.

Written on Marco Island teachers take a stand:

Strike3: The money you give does not go to the Collier School Board. By State statute, money collected by local taxes go to the State and then re-disputed by them to all counties in Florida. Collier County gets very little back compared to other counties in Florida. Wealthy counties like Collier, Dade and Sarasota subsidize the less affluent counties. Even if you started your own school district on the island, you would get no more from your taxes that you get now.

Written on Marco Man moves to City Hall:

I have a better place for it but it would probably not fit.

Written on Work on Thompson’s contract commences:

I wonder why he did not choose Naples High?

Written on Kiester hosts budget forum:

Maybe someone can explain this to me. I recieved my proposed tax bill today for next year and the county tax went down almost 10%. School taxes even went down a couple dollars even though they did not have to under the legislation to lower taxes. But, the City of Marco taxes changed by only $.80. That is less than 1/2%. That is also after a $100,000 loss in value. Something does not add up. Of course that also does not include the sewer installation loan that will be assesed this year and the next 20 years on my tax bill.

Written on Councilors object to special called meeting:

Below is what I wrote in a blog here on June 22nd about an earlier story about the election change to November. Looks like exactly what I said would happen has happened. No matter what side you are on, anyone with any intellegance can not look at this and say it is right.

"capt1black (anonymous) at 12:13 p.m. on 6-22-07"

"The July meeting was cancelled at the last meeting, but they left open the need for a special meeting. I would not be surprised if they try to hold a "special" meeting in July when some of the councilors (those opposed to the November change) are out of town.
One minute Mr. Moss said the date can not be changed to January, even if it saved money, due to the city charter. Then all of a sudden he says it is ok to change it to save money. O wait, I have a new idea. Why don’t we change it to November to save even more money? This was not discussed before today by anyone; it just popped into our heads. Give me a break.
No matter what side of the issues you are on, this just stinks of political back door maneuvering. If they honestly believe that the majority of the Island is behind them, than what are they afraid of? Have the election in January and let the people decide what council they want."

Written on Collier school district looks to help employees further with health insurance:

I have had insurance through 3 different companies over my work life. The insurance with CCPS is the worst I have ever had. Yes, the employee may not pay weekly in premiums, but they pay in the end if they ever need it. I had better coverage making $5/hr for a hotel than I have now.

Written on Full day of fun under way at Marco Island Residents Beach:

Get a refund for the fireworks. I had a great view of the 20 minute show from South Beach. Unfourtunatly, it was the Naples fireworks I saw most. The begining was great, but did someone hit the end show button by accident? 12 minutes was not even worth my time to find a parking spot and walk to the beach. if I missed the rest of the show after waiting for 10 minutes, thinking this can not be all, please correct me. If not, get your refund. only on Marco.

Written on Marco councilwoman claims she was misled:

Written on Cheerleading recognized as a sport, but ...:

As long as I have been involed in high school sports at 2 different high schools in Collier County, I have never heard a rule that prevents students from doing 2 sports at the same time. An athlete is not suppose to begin a new season sport until the old season sport is finished so that a team is not decimated when the next season begins, but I believe athletes are and should be encouraged to do everything they want to do, including 2 sports at the same time.

Written on Reinke provides wisdom to eighth-graders in transition:

It is not the city that does not want them on campus.

Yes, I do have a child at the school and overall am very happy with his education. My coments were based on information directly from people at the school.

Written on Reinke provides wisdom to eighth-graders in transition:

I am surprised they allowed the Cheif on campus. They have prevented the Marco Island Police Youth Relations deputy from coming on campus all year, even though she is paid to help with the youth of this island by our tax dollars. I have been told they do not want to turn the students into “snitches.” I wonder who they are worried about the students snitching on. Every school in Collier County has a YRD that visits the school regularly if not all the time, except MICMS. Does not sound like a care for their safety to me.

Written on Police chase ends in multiple charges:

There is a huge difference between an emergency situation and a trained emergency vehicle driver with lights going slightly over the speed limit to get to an emergency call and a cop pushing a drunk driver over twice the speed limit endangering anyone on or near the road. If that drunk driver ran into and hurt or killed one of your family members while being chased at that speed would you think the same? Think about that.

Written on Police chase ends in multiple charges:

Is anyone else concerned that the police had a vehicle pursiut at up to 75 miles/hr on the island streets? If he could see someone hold something out the window than he was doing the same speed as the drunk speeder. get his tag, put a car at the bridges, and slow down. If you are not chasing he will most likely slow down and go home. Then pick him up there.

Written on City asking for variance on water-usage rules:

Maybe someone should talk to the Marco YMCA. Their sprinklers run every other day at 7:00 p.m. and have for the past 3 months.

Written on Marco Island officials want to extend irrigation schedule:

All I see is the people of Marco doubling the time they run their sprinklers. They already run them everyday on off times, why would they follow it now. We have been in the worste drought in a long time if not ever and all the grass on marco is green.

Written on Letters to the Editor: March 9:

Mr Liebson:

There will never be a completely fair way of paying for this. Yes, you paid already, but so have those on septic. I paid almost $8,000 six years ago for a septic system because that is what I was told I had to do. I was not given a chance then to decide between the two. Today, they are much more. Those people building over the next few years will have to put in a septic at almost $20,000 and then in a year or 4 they will have to have it crushed and pay another $20,000 plus. Some people have replaced their system over the years. Yes, you paid each month to the sewer, but it was for the use of the system. It has already been shown that the money was not spent for maintenance or updates to the plant. If it is believed that sewers are needed for the benefit of the entire Island (and there are those that do not believe that) than the expense should be shared by everyone on the island. Those on septic should not be penalized for playing by the rules at the time they built.

Written on Honesty rewarded:

She returns $2040 without thought and gets a 0.25% reward? Even the managers at the Hilton knew that was an embarresmant.

Written on Marco may form special fire district :

Ed:
The new lights are on from Barfield to the Marco Boat Club and it looks like daylight there. Complete overkill and over spending.

Written on Boater cited for violating waterways ordinance :

Marco Island City Manger Bill Moss said Thursday. “Their policies reflect the expectations of our community. It is unfortunate that one or more people intentionally violate laws because they disagree with the vast majority of Marco Island citizens.”

I am not sure what country Mr. Moss has moved to. Whether you believe in the ordinance or not, the right of a citizen to partake in civil disobedience to fight what they believe to be an unjust law is part of the foundation of this country. For a public official to criticize this fundamental right is unfortunate. If the law is just, than Mr. Moss has nothing to worry about; if it is not, than it will be overturned as necessary.

Written on City takes action to reduce STRP assessments:

I understand that those on sewer do not want to pay part of the new system because they paid already. But 5 years ago, I paid for a septic tank (whether it is right or not) because that is what I was told to do by the city. It was several thousand dollars and even more today to do it for a property that is not on sewer yet. Therefore, I can also say I already paid my due because I did what I was told to do at the time and now they want to make me pay again for a new system.
If you think it is so important to change it, then everyone should be willing to put in a fair share. Everyone with a house here has paid one way or another.

Written on City hopes to land 5 more sewer assessment districts:

I am amazed that many of you are adults. If my 11 year old son acted like you do in public, he would be grounded for a month. Although ILOVEMARCO is at the top of the childish act list, I am appalled by many responses from all sides in these forums. I guess what they say is true. The older you get the more childish you become. This has become a very emotional topic and if you can not give viewpoints without name calling, maybe your parents should take your computers away.
