Riviere needs to go! He continues to act like a dictator on this island. The city council as has been the case for MANY years allows their city manager to do whatever he wants whenever he wants. Something as important as changing the speed limit island wide should have been presented to and approved by the council. HE NEEDS TO BE FIRED!

Really...a school that "possibly might" have courses. And as far as I can see on the website, the teaching staff consists of PE instructor, soc studies teacher, art instructor and a spanish teacher. I guess it's POSSIBLE they MIGHT get math, english and science teachers.

Truth is with 70 kids between 2 grades....thats approx 35 kids in a GRADE....Do you really think they can offer all of those classes??? There will be 1 class in each area and I hope the ONE SIZE FITS ALL theory works for everyone...1 math one english....will not be cost effective to offer any more....still not too late to go to a REAL school!

Which of the "REAL" middle schools have a football team? Apparently, just La Belle. So "if you have a boy that is serious about football" you can drive him to La Belle every day. Or you can take him to the highest rated school in the county, the CHARTER school on li'l old Marco Island.

No one cares about Middle School football! That too will be a joke! There is no place for football at the Middle School level. If you want to play then join the Optomist or any of the area teams for that age group. Everyone knows this is a facade for the High School program. They are banking on getting the kids to "buy" into the Vandy program in hopes they will go to the bogus high school. Anyone with half a brain will see through this. Lets face it....do you want to play against a bunch of no name loser schools or against Naples,Lely,Barron,Palmetto,Gulf Coast, Immokalee....this school with 50 kids will NEVER play against the local teams...they will always be playing school far away that are equal to "ST MARYS SCHOOL FOR THE BLIND"!

in response to mmpj:

It's called.......CHOICE......Either you choose to send your kid to MICMS/MIAcademy ....or... you don't......why does everyone care what people choose for their own families? The big debate, seems to me, isn't scholastic, it's athletic...MICMS has been very successful in their current, (and past), athletic programs, thus far. Why should they fail now? $150.00 for each kid(?) (which is 60%,) and the rest comes from donations and concession sales?? For participation in organized football? What's the big deal?? Let them have a go at it...Everything has to start somewhere. I know when you go to a high school game or a Pop Warner game in Collier County, there is a spectator charge..It does mention above that admission will be free..Maybe some of us will be able to support our teams without having to travel very far from home.....

If you think you will be able to participate without travelling far you are wrong...this team will travel MUCH further than the Optomist and will play vs much more organized programs with larger numbers...this will result in a negative experience all around. Its OK to not have EVERYTHING on Marco...there are BETTER options for literally ALL sports OFF THE ISLAND!

Written on School gives OK for Charter football:

The middle school dips into reserves to meet its budget....the board approves of a program that will cost in excess of 10K....what is wrong with this picture??? This is clearly an attempt to attract students to the failing charter high school. The principal of the middle school and the board needs to have their heads examined!
30 kids in a school that will only have 40 students sounds like a bad situation. Any child that gets bamboozled into attending this high school and wasting their years playing for a 3rd tier program will need thier heads examined

Written on Tryouts held for Charter School football:

"Initially, 50 boys and 20 girls claimed interest in football. Vanderjagt said some kids were not there because of other school activities"........the final numbers were 30....sounds like not much interest here...40 kids including 20 girls came to their senses and did not attend....This will be a joke if it ever gets off the ground...actually, it wont really be funny when many of our kids are injured as a result of playing both ways and being overmanned....this needs to stop for safety reasons alone! sign your kids up at Optomist and stop this lunacy! This is a ploy to increase support for that other crazy project that will be a joke and fail...THE MARCO ISLAND ACADEMY.

Written on Football a step closer for Charter School?:

My question to the school is WHY????
What are they trying to accomplish? Who is driving this? I just dont see the incentive for the Middle School to do this? This is clearly driven to act as a "feeder" for the Charter High School so that they can "brainwash" the kids into going to the High School and play for Vandy. There is no reason for football to be played through Collier County Schools when there are far superior choices in the private sector such as the Optomist and Naples Football League.
There is a major conflict here and the principal of the Middle School needs to stop this!
20 girls are interested???HAHAH! This is going to be some team!

Written on Is football in Charter School’s near future?:

I still dont understand why the principal of the middle school is so accomodating to the academy...wait until they are both fighting for the same dollars on the island, which is extremely limited. With Both schools needing to fundraise hundreds of thousands of dollars just to break even, it wont be long before Both become CCPS...not Charter....just a matter of time....when that heppens...CCPS will get what it wanted...to shut down the High School!

Written on Is football in Charter School’s near future?:

What is wrong with the currrent program? Why is it that the Marco Eagles travel program through the optomist is suddenly insufficient?
Where does the school think it will get qualified coaches? Is the High School coach that the academy hired going to coach BOTH?
This is an example of trying to fix something that is not broken. The Charter School needs to stick with educating and allow the private organizations to handle sports.
The charter school barely can handle its own operating costs and does not need this to be added. DONT GO TO THE COMMUNITY FOR DONATIONS....WE HAVE GIVEN TOO MUCH~!

Written on Is football in Charter School’s near future?:

How many middle schools offer football?? NONE!
The cost to put out a football team is is a lot more than any other sport. With equipment and insurance this will drain both schools. The Optomist is a great organization and should not have to deal with this loss of players to a school that has no right offering the sport. This is clearly another effort to create a tunnel to the new academy, but they again are missing the point. IF YOU HAVE A CHILD THAT WANTS TO SERIOUSLY PLAY FOOTBALL OR ANY OTHER SPORT AT THAT MATTER YOU DO NOT WANT TO RUIN THEIR HIGH SCHOOL EXPERIENCE BY PLAYING AGAINST A BUNCH OF NOBODY SCHOOLS IN FRONT OF NOBODY!
THE REAL ATHLETES WILL NOT BE GOING TO THIS LAME SCHOOL IN THE FIRST PLACE!

And he is not "just a kicker" - he was a world-class goalie for Canada in soccer and a college quarterback in addition to being a kicker. His addition to the Academy is a great move!

What Academy? With less than 50 kids signed up how can they even open neverless offer football!

Written on Former NFL kicker Mike Vanderjagt to be football coach at Marco school:

This school has not hired one single teacher or administrator that is what I would label as "world class". Their whole idea behind the school was to offer a superior alternative to Lely. Thus far all they have done is raid the middle school of a few "inexperienced" teachers that are simply "popular". The football coach has no experience as a coach. He has never coached on any level. He probably would be more qualified as a soccer coach. Lets face it, I dont recall any former kickers turning into quality coaches. The organizers are hiring people that the kids would like in hopes that they follow them. They have not hire one superior teacher or coach. The AD ran middle school sports. Again, no experience.
This school is a major dissapointment to many as they have been promised world class and are getting mediocre class. There is a word for misrepresentation...Websters calls it "fraud". Im still waiting for Jacques Cousteau's family to show up!
HAHAHAH! This is a JOKE!

Written on Former NFL kicker Mike Vanderjagt to be football coach at Marco school:

This is simply another "desperation" move on the part of the organizers of this school. The enrollment numbers are not where they should be and this is an extremely far stretching move on their part in the eleventh hour. Look at this from a logical standpoint. The school will only initially have 9th and 10th grade students. The school at best will have 50-75 students. Football is an extremely costly sport to participate in and almost every school in the country with an enrollment of under 100 has probably never attempted to do this. What parents need to do just as they evaluate the school from an academic standpoint is determine what value they are getting. Any student that attends this school because they are now offering football will be relegated to the following fate: 1)Participate in a JV level program for several years and for most if not all of the initial students their entire 4 years.
2)Accept the fact that with thir size they will NEVER play against Collier Countie's finest i.e. Naples, Lely, Gulf Coast, Barron or Palmetto. It just will NEVER happen. Just like upstart programs like FBA and CSN...they will play against VERY weak competition and NEVER get the exposure of that of the public schools.
3)They will be undermanned severely even against schools of their own size because no school would even attempt to put a team on the field with a school enrollment of under 100. what this will mean is a weekly "beatdown" almost to the point where the EMS will have to call in backups!
Hopefully the prospective parents of any Marco student looks into this in the big picture sense and sees that this like many other programs on Marco are a JOKE. Everyone knows that if you want your child to excell it is not offered on the island. There are zero quality programs on the island. If you want your child to be taught by a former "kicker" be my guest....Not my idea of quality. If you are lazy and are looking for the easy way out...go ahead with the rest of the "Marco Misfits"

WHAT THE Y NEEDS TO DO IS WORRY ABOUT THEIR OWN BUSINESS AND MAKE IT BETTER. IF THE Y DID WHAT THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO DO THERE WOULDNT BE ANY TALK OF THIS BUT THE TRUTH IS THEY OFFER PATHETIC PROGRAMS AT A PATHETIC FACILITY....THE CITY SHOULD DO WHAT IT WANTS AND DOESNT HAVE TO CLEAR IT WITH THE Y OR ANYONE ELSE!

Written on Y LEADERS WANT REFERENDUM ON NEW COMMUNITY CENTER:

Same old responses from the Y...they are essentially afraid of competition. They have always fought the city parks and it programs because the city has offered superior services to that of the Y. Instead of opposing this the Y should try and improve their own services. The Y is a "private" entity that the city has no obligation to "protect" or give any assurances as to the programming. This is America...competition drives the capitalistic society. The Y needs to stop whinning and finally put their money where there mouth is and build first rate facilities and offer first rate programs. Written on Marco Island city manager: On Mackle Park plans:

Paul Revere calls Dana a "dreamer"....Dana was not a dreamer, he was a VISIONARY! Dana had a vision of what a first class community would need and he attempted to move on that. Paul Revere is just sucking up to the establishment and is making politically correct statements. He acknowledged that the existing facility is useless, he just cant get himself to state the truth which is to upgrade equall to the community. Marco Island is not La Belle! Marco Island has the resources to do this but there are people like Revere that just dont prioritize it. Why hire a director if all you want him to do is supervise the maintenance of fields....a director is responsible for the entire scope of a department and that includes upgrading to meet the needs of the 21st century!

Written on Mackle Park expansion plans topic of Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee meeting:

in response to deltarome:

Why can't the city and the YMCA join up in their building plans? Sounds like a lot of duplication in planned space!
Taking more tax money from residents so the city can make a few dollars renting out a facility doesn't sound like good math to me!

The reason why the city and YMCA cant partner is because the YMCA is inept. The YMCA does not know how to offer any quality programming and has not done anything to upgrade their facilities. We the people of Marco want nothing to do with the YMCA. The fact that we have a quality Parks and Recreation department is because people want quality and the YMCA has NEVER offered anything other than tennis to this island.
The people of this island need to understand that in order to be a first rate community you need to offer first rate facilities and services.
When people look at Marco what do they see???
They see an antiquated Recreational facility and a beat up YMCA....No one wants to spend money, but WHEN is a good time??? There NEVER is a good time...you need to MAKE THE TIME!
The time is NOW! I believe there is room for some compromise here...maybe we scale it down a little but allow room for greater expansion at a later date. To do nothing is ridiculous. There are people on this island that moved here 10-15 years ago with children that still cannot enjoy a quality recreational facility that MOST people in the US enjoy including our friends in Naples.
This is part of the Master Plan...it will not bankrupt the community...stop bragging about how wealthy and upscale Marco is if you cant back it!
This would attract people of ALL ages to the island and would make people want to stay here instead of move to Naples.

This school will not and does not have the means to offer a "world class" education. This school will offer the same if not less than any of the other schools in Collier County. This school is a FRAUD. This school is being presented merely as a convenience to the lazy Marco Islanders that want to shelter their children and not expose them to the real world. Unfortunately the real losers here will be the children. These children who are entering the best and most important years of their lives will spend them in a moldy trailer. These kids will never be able to experience what a real high school has to offer. This school will keep their small brains SMALL!!!!!! ANY PARENT THAT IS SERIOUSLY THINKING ABOUT THIS NEEDS TO BE REPORTED TO THE DIVISION OF YOUTH AND FAMILY SERVICES FOR CHILD ABUSE! When "johnny's " friends are going to football and basketball games to root for their school, "johnny" will be peering into a tortoise hole....ENJOY! DONT SAY I DIDNT WARN YOU!

Written on Marco Academy organizers: Overcoming obstacles and ‘pursuing the dream’:

To even discuss starting a football program obviously shows how desperate the organizers of this school are. Look around at other small schools like CSN and FBA....they didnt offer football for years after they were formed. Football is a very costly endeavor and requires a lot of kids....two things this new school does not and will not have a lot of. How can you expect to offer football with a total enrollment of 50!! If half of the enrollment were boys that would only give you 25 boys to choose from and that is assuming all of them even want to play. Secondly lets assume they sucker in a few more kids on the promise of football....what level would they be playing on? Look, as a parent you need to make a sound decision as to where you child can experience high school. This trailer school will not even come close to what your child can get at any of the public schools in Naples. Again, this is a desperation move to try and increase enrollments...the worst thing that a school can do. They should rely on the educational aspects, but obviously there are too many holes in that argument as well. People of Marco...stop with this two bit school and enroll your kids at Lely High School with the rest of the sane people of Marco!! Generations before you have sent their kids to Lely and have gone on to hundreds of schools of higher learning and have participated in sports against their contemporaries.
If you have a son that wants to play football why in the world would you waste his opportunity to play against the best of Collier County! This school is YEARS away if EVER from participating at that level. Your kid will be a "GUINEA PIG" for the real kids this school is being built for....and everyone knows it! This school if it ever gets going is designed for the organizers kids...NOT YOURS!

Marco Island needs to come into the 21st Century!
The current facility is antiquated and serves little to no purpose. The cost is virtually pennies to each individual homeowner. Homes assessed at $500K will pay $38 in tax! For $38 a year you will have a state of the art facility that you can be proud of. What do we have now but a feww bocce and shuffleboard courts. We can allocate millions for sewers and beautification but nothing for the enhancement of all of our lives. Parks and Recreation bring tremendous value to a community. A community with first rate facilities sell themselves. Marco currently has first rate schools. If this were to pass the quality of life here would increase and make it much more attractive to live here. We shouldnt be so shortminded.

"The district has been fighting Watt every step of the way to protect what she called one of the lowest performing high schools in the U.S., consistently receiving a C or D grade from the state, she said.".....So now Ms Watt is taking the offensive and attacking Lely High School. She is saying Lely is one of the lowest performing schools in the US! Ms Watt the latest FCAT results indicated Lely as a "C" school...the alleged best schools in the County were a "B"...hardly a significant difference and how does this grade make Lely one of the lowest in the US??

“The district has a vested interest in protecting Lely financially since there are open seats as well as personally as many of the district members are closely attached to Lely,” she said. Ms Watt again attacks Lely and the intentions of the school board. And what is wrong with opposing a school that is exactly as she calls it "not financially in the taxpayers of Collier County's interest? Should our elected officials ignore the financial environment in which we are in and support a school that clearly will be no different and probably less comprehensive than the existing school? Why should they not support a school that is in place and capable of providing the best education possible for the children of Marco? This charter high school is clearly being promoted out of convenience to the few young parents that dont want to leave the island. Well I have news for you...YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE TO SUE THE SCHOOL BOARD...AND IF YOU DO...BE PREPARED TO BE EATEN ALIVE AND YOUR SCHOOL WILL NEVER GET OFF THE GROUND!

The truth to the matter is Lely is the equal to any school in the county. The county has existing schools that have room for all the children of Marco. 99% of the people on Marco are SATISFIED with the overall educational experience that Lely offers. The charter high school is a "want" and not a "need" and therefore does not have to be met with open arms by the school board and community. The charter concept is highly exaggerated when it comes to performance...they claim that they will deliver a "world class" education but in reality cannot and will not. The only thing they will deliver is a school that will allow the the Marco children to never leave the island until they attend college. This is a BAD idea...it has very little support from the Marco Island community and is only being pushed by a very small minority of what I call SPOILED BRATS that cant take NO FOR AN ANSWER!
