Maybe u should think a little bit about this statement from Romney. Then your discussion about welfare and who get's it and who not is not the biggest problem we have.

in response to Ocram:

I was just looking over the presentation that J. Watt made to City Council this past Monday and noticed that although she had sent out a letter to her proponents to show up in green shirts there were not more than a handfull actually showing up. I also noticed many more red shirts showing their lack of support of a Charter School on Tract K present.

Not only was there very few people showing her alleged support the children that were there were, in fact, younger than 12 years old. There appeared to be no Middle School or High School students present. This signals that not only is there little support as claimed by Ms. Watt and Co. but the students that would be involved were also not showing their support for Ms. Watt's presentation which had her usual inconsistancies and misinformation.

The day after she says that she is aware that Tract K. is filled with neighborhood people not wanting it she goes and files the letter above along with a threatened lawsuit. Kind of talking out of two sides of one's mouth, I would say.

Ok I am ready for the comeback that those students were home studying. Yeah Right more like talking to their friends at Lely I would say, too.

Did you attend that meeting?

Written on Marco Island charter school supporters threaten lawsuit over delays:

in response to Ian_Curtis:

Yes, Lely was a D school 1 year and has been a C school all other years. However, Lely has improved its score for the past 3 years. This year, it was a C school even though it had the points required to be a B school. It was dropped because 50% of the 25% lowest performing students need to make certain gains. If only 49% make gains you lose a letter grade. The difference between a C or B grade can be under 10 students not making enough gains. My child went to TBE and had 5’s for math and reading all years. At MICMS he stayed flat in FCAT math and went down in reading while getting all A’s. After his first year at Lely he went up in both Math and Reading again. To say Lely is one of the “worst performing schools in the US” is not only ignorant but degrading not only to the teachers and parents of the school, but more importantly the students who attend Lely, many of which are Marco Island youth. The proponents claim it had nothing to do with Lely. They wanted a closer school on Marco. Now the truth comes out and they show their true colors.

Dear Ian_Curtis

something is wrong in your argumentation:

Nice try to explain why there are two levels, but i have a hard time to believe it. Maybe the reason for my disbelief is my profession as a construction engineer and i build one or two bridges, when i was working. We will see how this works out.

Written on POLL: Group opposes proposed Marco charter high school during Collier School Board meeting:

in response to lauralbi1:

Let's do some Fifth Grade (or maybe third grade for Tommy Barfield) math. If there are 125 students from Marco Island available for the 9th and 10th grades in a new High School, and the new High School requires 250 children in order to open (can someone confirm this), how many children from off Island (mostly from the Migrant workers on 6L Farms) have to be bussed in to complete the minimum enrollment??
Whether the number is 125, 100 or 75, I guess it is okay to Bus these students in on a 20 minute ride, but not okay for the Marco students to take a 20 minute ride to Lely.
Are these statements and assumptions correct ?? We would like to know. And if not, what are the facts ??
Ed Issler

Mr. Ed Issler,

you want to do 3 grade math so do it:

125 + 125 equals 250.

That was the result i learned in school. Maybe your result is different. And again the Kids from 6 L Farms already attending the schools here. But i think i can tell you this a million times and you don't get it, because it is not in your favor.
And you should know the facts. You have a copy of the application. Start reading.

Written on Letter to the Editor: Love thy neighbor, deny thy high school:

in response to lauralbi1:

Klau.... I guess you haven't heard. There will be 125 kids being bussed in from LL farms off of 41 in Naples to this school in order for the school to make it's minimumm numbers to open. According to all the articles written about LL Farms and the pictures that you can find on the Eagle website, these are not Marco Island kids.
Yes, I WAS (repeat was) very concerned for my Quality Of Life and my neighborhood as a result of 125 kids who will have no physical education and be frustrated by a language barrier and how they might react to those conditions.
Although I am no longer worried about that situation occuring on the Church property, as we are dealing with that situation, I am now concerned for my fellow Marco Island neighbors and where this Temporary School might now be placed.
Ed Issler

Mr Issler,

if you are that concerned about the Kids from LL Farms (which by the way is called 6 L Farms) then you maybe should try to shut down the existing schools on Marco because these kids are already attending the schools here.

Islandeye1 i don't think i know you and i don't think you know me. And just for the record. It is not about if Lely High School is a good or bad High School. It is about giving the kids the possibility to choose if they want to attend LHS (that's fine with me) or if they want to attend a HS on Marco Island. A High School on Marco Island would definitely enrich the current offerings for the Marco community young and old.

Lely ranked as an A school? That's something new. Where did you get this information from??? The results aren't out for this year yet.

I just checked the official school scores 2009 and Lely High School was rated as an C school. The Lely school that was rated as an A school was Lely Elementary School :-)

in response to momof3children:

The overprotective parents that have no life other than their children perplex me. At what age do you cut the strings? We are talking about HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. Lely is ranked as an “A” school. It is up to the individual student/family what academic and social experience they will choose. Life Lesson #1 - What you put into it is what you get out of it. It begins with the core ethics and values that parents/guardians instill in their children.

At what point do we teach our children that life can be struggling even challenging? That there ARE bumps in the road and not everybody plays nicely in the sandbox? If you continue to coddle young adults we are going to continue to have generations of deserving children that expect to get without doing.

Building the school on the island is a convenience it is not a matter of NEED. That is what makes this entire proposal preposterous.

Lely ranked as an A school? That's something new. Where did you get this information from??? The results aren't out for this year yet.

To all of you who think that the high schools here are so "good". This is a paragraph out of an article published in yesterdays Naples News:

"In recent years, more than half of Florida high school graduates who took placement tests at community colleges have needed remediation in at least one of three areas: reading, writing or mathematics."

...Any more questions about the current lacking educational standards in the state of Florida?

And again this is how rumors start...
for clarification:
6L Farms is located East of SR 41 across from Eagle Lakes Golf Club - not in Immokalee and still in the current Marco Island school district!! These kids already go to school here.

Written on Guest Commentary: Are city leaders creating a conflict of interest?:

@Brillo - Sorry you feel directly attacked by my addressing inconsistencies, whether rumor or lie or whatever you want to call it, but no where in any published article have I read anything about busing in 200+ kids from other communities or Immokalee... So that leads me to believe your or your buddies comments to be rumor not fact.

Written on Guest Commentary: Are city leaders creating a conflict of interest?:

In response to 1Paradiselost:
Yes I did read the press releases and it says that the population of the Charter High School should mirror the population of Marco Island Charter Middle School - They aren't busing any students to MICMS from Immokalee are they??? Furthermore, in the press releases it states that the school will support from 400 to a "MAXIMUM" of 600 students.

Written on Guest Commentary: Are city leaders creating a conflict of interest?:

Maybe you guys (Brillo, Laurabi etc) should stop spreading rumors like the one with the 200+ kids they would be bused from Immokalee to Marco to attend the HS. This is absolute nonsense.

And then you wonder why you get these kinds of reponses???

@Brillo, your post from today - A lot of MAYBE's.... So let me start with this word too.

MAYBE it would be better if, instead of you guys putting all your effort into spreading lies and rumors about the high school, MAYBE you all should try to support OUR kids and combine your energy to help find the "right" place for the High School.

Written on Letter to the Editor: Think outside the (school) box:

Ed Issler, please explain something to me - and other fellow readers - a few weeks ago (per your August 4th blog to be exact) you were an avid supporter of the Charter High School initiative. Why the sudden change of Heart??? Isn't this a double standard too.... You supported the Charter School as long as it wasn't in you neighborhood but now it seems to be too close for comfort for you to support the school for the same reasons you did a few days ago! What or who will you turn on next???
