You know Monte.....YOU are the problem, along with John Arceri and the entire Knights Of Columbus. What is with you people and power? What do you really want? I do truly appreciate the fact that you all believe in hell however.
Hey Ed.........whatever happened to the Marco Mafia's support for Wacky Wayne? Didn't he vote in lock step? Too much of an embarassement? Hell, the other two are bankrupt and in foreclosure as well. Why throw just poor Wayne under the bus? (You really should have bribed the pathetic character to drop out early....like maybe a family crisis or something. Couldn't you guys come up with the six grand?)
Out of curiosity, you only mention three. Who is your forth? Couldn't come up with that one either?
Between you and me Eddie.....don't you find the drunk to be a little unstable? Maybe he doesn't embarrass you as much as Wayne? Kinda of a lousy slate huh?....but then you don't pick 'em Eddie. That's John's job.
PS Do you guys still meet at the "Bing"?
I have a vacant lot not next to me that has been used many times for seawall construction....not always even close to this location. It is an irritant, but only made worse by the workmen themselves. They throw their lunch garbage all over the property and never tidy up the area. One contractor even hooked up to my neighbors electric power without permission in order to pump out his sinking barge (guess which contractor). The neighbor called me wondering why his electric bill was $300 while he was gone in the summer. I had a similar problem last summer while I was gone.
I cannot believe that I find myself in agreement with Klaus, but he is absolutely 100% correct.
John Arceri has destroyed the peace and economic well being of this Island. He is a disgrace in my eyes.
Why did they build the units so close to the water in the first place? Buyer beware!
I sure hope that we do not wind up paying for this stupidity, but I would bet that we will in one way or another.
Agreed on Fiala. She is a major tax and spend Rhino!!
BS
The answer to your question would be John Arceri and Monte Lazarus. Who else would prop up three councilmen who are personally bankrupt yet vote to spent YOUR money?
It is your own fault, however. You keep electing these "syndicate members". They are smart enough to orchestrate bullet balloting to the ignorant who vote single issues. They know that they can promise a few dollars monthly water/sewer bill savings to those who ignore the $400,000,000 of debt that they are now responsible for....more when they push through totally unnecessary "upgrades" to Mackle Park and eventually the CRA....and more yet as they expand Fire and Police and greater pensions.
You need only look to Stockton, CA for the eventual result of all of this spending, but Marco citizens are far too disinterested in their local politics to notice.
Good luck,
John Putnam
"We have lost our focus since then to the simple debt free life that was Marco Island."
Bob.....well said. Thanks for all of your effort.
Wikipedia:
"In Marxist theory, socialism, lower-stage communism or the socialist mode of production, refers to a specific historical phase of economic development and its corresponding set of social relations that eventually supersede capitalism in the schema of historical materialism. Socialism is defined as a mode of production where the criterion for economic production is use-value, and is based on direct production for use coordinated through conscious economic planning, where the law of value no longer directs economic activity, and thus monetary relations in the form of exchange-value, profit, interest and wage labor no longer operate.[1] Income would be distributed according to individual contribution. The social relations of socialism are characterized by the working-class effectively controlling the means of production and the means of their livelihood either through cooperative enterprises or public ownership and self management, so that the social surplus would accrue to the working class or society as a whole."
So....what I am missing here?
I cannot believe that I am reading this correctly, but then I have to assume that the teacher's union finds this to be perfectly sound policy. After all, we have lowered (actually more like removed) the qualifications to remain a teacher. It only makes sense to bring the passing grade level down to their level.....correct?
The Marco Island Academy is the answer for those of you who wish to provide their children with a better education and the potential of going on to better colleges. Now that comment will stir the crazies on this site, but only because it is simply the truth. READ the story above AGAIN. So sad.
We do not need...no, better yet, we cannot afford the Dept. of Education or teacher's unions. Public service should NEVER been allowed to bargain collectively. NEVER. Why not prisoner's unions? How about the military? Even the socialist Roosevelt understood this and did not allow it.
Next month's recall election in Wisconsin will tell us all if there is any hope for freedom in America. I am sure that our founders are watching from above. If Walker loses, we might as well join the EU.
Excellent comment Panola60. All you missed was the liberals hatred of freedom.
The problem is that the single family home owners are apathetic and do not vote or even seem to be aware of the problem. That is how we wind up with councilman (3 on current council and 4 in recent past) who are bankrupt and in foreclosure putting you and me in debt for $400,000,000. But they are quite sure that we don't notice as they are all running for re-election....even the one total buffoon who used to plagiarize in this paper and was once accused of sexual harassment in the City offices.
And that is the best we have....hand picked by John Arceri and Monte Lazarus.
Home owners outnumber condo dwellers by a significant number. Wake up Marco.
Marcofriend and Deltarome have hit the nail on the head!
If the citizens are stupid enough to reelect these councilmen, they deserve everything that they get.
Unfortunately, apathy is a big problem on Marco.
Steve,
Did you check with John Arceri before writing this blasphemy? You could be in real trouble!
Hey.....why not build a five story parking ramp down at the south end? I'll bet Arceri and Monte would invest......or we could sell more bonds...now there is an idea any syndicate member could latch onto, don't ya think?
Hmmmm......and the next ice age is coming when?
As I read the comments above, I notice that the anti-academy writers are not able to communicate a clear, intelligent argument. On the other hand, those supporting the academy write well and make a good case.
I have witnessed the exact same scenario when viewing the union protests in the Wisconsin State Capital and the so-called "Occupy" protests. The under-educated believe that shouting and (often) foul behavior and language make their point. (Actually....it does.)
There is no reason to rant and rave about MIA any longer. It exists and it is growing. If you don't like it, don't send your kids there. They can then grow up just like you.
The academy kids have made a courageous decision to experiment with excellence and I would guess that they will be our future leaders and job creators.
Larry Sacher is EXACTLY the model candidate that can (and will) turn this Island around. There are three others like him that will hopefully announce soon. All, like Larry, attend Council and committee meetings on a regular basis and work hard to steer the City toward a conservative agenda.
I believe that seven or more of our Councilmen have been involved in foreclosure and bankruptcy during their terms. Three are on the current council. Two of those are running for re-election. Now that takes a fair amount of chutzpah! (My guess is that Arceri, Lazarus and the rest of the so-called "syndicate" are concerned about these two eating up their slate, but what can they do? They put them there!) One was even accused of sexual harassment at City Hall. This same one had his MANY pedantic LTEs called out for plagiarism several times. (Thank God for some relief!)
At any rate, are these really the leaders that we need? Do you think that they have run the City just like they have their personal lives and fortunes? I think yes.
There are serious spending issues still on the agenda that FAR outweigh utility rate disagreements, but I assure you that the "syndicate" will concentrate on dividing the Island over those rates alone. The other issues, such as re-building Mackle Park, will be ignored by those voters who will be inundated with threats of raising their utility rates a few dollars a month. In the meantime, the City will obligate those same residents to hundreds of millions of MORE debt. It is a fool's game and they play it well. (Remember how Larry was elected? Shameful, but extremely effective.) This is as sure as Obama playing the race card repeatedly in the coming election....or continuing to blame Bush for all of his failures.
The only hope is to elect a MINIMUM of two new conservative Councilmen, but four would be better. Maybe then we can get our spending under control. We can start with the fire and police and work our way down the list.
I resent the continual representation of the San Marco Catholc Church and the Knights of Columbus in politics on Marco Island. This cult is running the Island into the ground rapidly. Vote them out for good.
Businesses do NOT exist for ANY other reason than to make profit.....period! This is also the simple reasoning behind the statement that "businesses do not pay taxes: people pay taxes".
Any reader who does not understand these two simple statements deserves to live in the socialist hell that they seem to long for.
Incidentally, my bet is that the writer of this ill-informed article shops at Wal-Mart twice a week! I can only hope that he opens a not-for-profit donut and coffee shop on Marco so that we can all enjoy his generosity. He will probably even hire two or three "extra" union employees to serve. To hell with those greedy profits!!!!
He should really head out to NY and join the anti-Wallstreet crowd. Take along a doobie.
(Sometimes I crack myself up!)
In other words, they got a raise.
"You see, counter to the Republican talking point that government does not create jobs, our federal, state, city and county governments are probably responsible for hiring more employees then any private company on the planet."
I am thinking that this man is truly an idiot. A government "job" is exceedingly easy to create, but it does not add to the economy, but rather adds to the debt that the private sector remains responsible for.
It is this type of mindless, deranged thinking that perpetuates the liberal lie.
Someone should tell our council
While I am at at.....where is the outrage over Obama appointing Immelt as "Job Czar"? What a terrible nasty joke on the American public. Where is our unbiased press on this issue?
Immelt and GE are a DISGRACE. Obama's major campaign contributor paid no taxes on 4 billion in earnings and just shipped thousands of jobs to China along with two divisions of GE holdings.
In the meantime, Obama's NLRB is preventing Boeing from building a plant in South Carolina. They would rather it be built overseas one would think....since that is likely the end result.......and you wonder why you are talking to Comcast customer service in India? WAKE UP!
Maybe it has something to do with minimum wage laws? Pensions? Unions? Hey....maybe Obama Care as well? Hmmmm.....just a thought.
in response to NobodysFool57: Gee, what projects were those? The electric municipalization/undergrounding scheme(which would have given us obscene electric rates), the Town Center CRA(could have easily put us well over $300 million in bonded debt), the Smokehouse Bay "designer" bridge, or perhaps the North Water Treatment Plant capacity expansion (MIU can't sell all the water they can produce right now). Poor Rony, he's learning a hard lesson about trying to eke out a livng on "Mark-up Island" without a six-figure salary. Boo Hoo. Three cheers for Dr. Sanchez.

You are indeed "Nobody's Fool".
Thank you for your comment.

You are correct. Yes he did "WIN, WIN". His tenacity with the politically corrupt EPA paid off in a very significant win that did NOT get enough attention from the horribly biased and controlled press.
Thank you for your post and support of a true Marco hero.
I predict that Joel has made a BIG mistake in taking on Dr. Sanchez.
Lely is the problem. Otherwise there would be no need for MIA. Simple enough. Get it?
I repeat my challenge to do a "Man On The Steet" interview of Lely students on campus with VERY basic questions covering math, chemistry, government, and literature.
http://www.marconews.com/news/2011/ju...
The challenge. Takers? Come on. No faith? Why?
Gee....no takes on my challenge. I wonder why. I do. Could it be that none of the Lely defenders have any faith at all in the outcome? Hmmm......and I was SOOOO hoping for a taker.....you know....someone with HONEST convictions. None of you are worth the time of day. You all talk, talk talk, bicker, bicker, bicker. True. And your names?
Hi Blondie,
Got a challege for you:
I volunteer to do a "Man on the Street" interview session on camera at the Lely campus this coming winter. I will select students randomly and ask very simple questions about American History, Chemistry, Mathematics, Literature, etc. My bet is that this will put an end to the discussion of the value of he "diverse" Lely experience.
You see, I am not at all concerned about the "excellent" students at Lely or any other high school in America. I am concerned about the vast majority....those that do not go on to Ivy League (HIGHLY overated) schools.
Cptnjimbo:
Well said sir. Please consider sending to the Sun Times as an LTE. It needs to be heard.
Thank you!
Oh PLEASE!
Such nonsense!
Jane Watt and MIA are attempting to grow young minds. The misguided (as always with the liberal set) continually use a false interest in the environment to push their agenda. First it was the eagles, now the turtles.
Out of curiosity, what was the environmental impact of the Obama bridge on your dear Island? What cost to your grand children?
Face it. You hate the concept of what you see as an "elite academy" on Marco Island. I love it! I want to see more and more of them. I want to see smart young kids getting a great education so that they can help all of us move on from this freedom killing political correctness that a very misguided and vocal minority has propagated upon us for far too long.
The sixties generation (mine) has left a great scar upon this wonderful American experiment. I wish that it would finally come to an end!
"Gibson - Foreclosed uponWaldack - Foreclosed uponRecker - only his business real estate is being foreclosed upon"
You missed Tucker, Minozzi & Popoff
“They’re not paying for anything,” Waldack said. “They’re going to be able to take advantage of it while everyone else is paying.”
Interesting comment from a man who is in bankruptcy and foreclosure, don't you think?
Sayre,
Most impressive. Unfortunately, you are attempting to reason with true morons.
Absolutely excellent LTE. Right on.
Unfortunately, the voters don't appear to give a crap.

And about the plagairism?
I judge the man by his actions. He is not a man that I would want to associate with. Frankly, he is a big embarassment for Marco Island and I don't think that statement will generate a lot of outrage around here!
SOME of you seem to forget that this man has been a major reason (as a puppet of Arceri) for our $260,000,000 dollar debt as well as a vocal proponent in support of the Jackson Labs boondoggle. all this from a man who doesn't even pay taxes due to foreclosures and bankruptcy!
WHAT ARE THE VOTERS THINKING?
Courses in aeronautical engineering (RIGHT! A budding rocket scientist wasting away on our council) from a college that doesn't even offer them and THREE cases of plagairism in only the last few months in this poor excuse for a newspaper....a paper that seems to have no conscience at all. (I note that this paper is the ONLY paper listed as a source of news on the City's website.....which is kind of interesting, now isn't it?)
My disgust for our City government only continues to grow.
I am afraid that it is you who is confused. I assure you that "Cave Dwellers" never referred to condo owners. "Cave Dwellers", after all, were painted to be anti STRP, but your analysis of the bullet vote in support of screwing the SFH owners into paying for a new sewer plant is RIGHT ON THE MARK! (and they know it too....which leads me to wondsering about the integrity of the hotel owners and condo owners......and Magel and Recker....whom I USED TO respect.)
in response to Ocram: Sorry, Not according to the district election statistics. Block voting was the word of the day because ALL of Arceri's boys got voted in.
in response to Ocram:
Sorry,
Not according to the district election statistics. Block voting was the word of the day because ALL of Arceri's boys got voted in.
No....you are misunderstanding. The so called "Cave Dwellers" were opposed to the STRP and certainly did NOT want to see an Arceri puppet elected. Arceri went to the condo dwellers for the bullet vote in order to "assure" them that they would not have to pay their fair share of the project.
In addition, the "bullet vote" was used in the last election to get Magel elected. Waldach was elected in the previous election.
I have to assume that you are very new on the Island.
And how will you all respond when the City (that's you) gets sued for A FEW MILLION DOLLARS? Just curious.
So far, we have been lucky, but now that the problem has been exposed and the perpetrator remains in office and undisciplined, we have set ourselves up for a killing.
The author has written to the Eagle and demanded a retraction and credit for the article. They will have no choice. It will then be interesting to see what comments follow. Waldick will never resign. He has no integrity (let alone brains). The rest of the council will be totally silent as they are equally lacking in integrity and/or the courage to make a statement, with the possible exception of Kiester, who is my hero in this bunch.
in response to 26yearsonmarco: To the Citizens of Marco Island: I was against the formation of this City from the beginning, because I knew from past experiences with people who claim to acting in the best interest of “We the People”, always act in their own self interest first. This is Politics 101, and Marco Island is just a microcosm of what is happening at every level of government from here to Washington. We need to show the rest of Florida and our Country that we can stand on our own feet. If not, stop complaining and go to the nearest “Happy Hour”. This is an excellent idea and the time has come. I would be happy to join with all interested parties to give this a shot. Email me at jwputnam@comcast.net if you want to seriously start an effort to dissolve our city government. We can meet and investigate the process.
The man is a fraud and not worth my time to even write this. What a shame that this is the best that we can do on Marco.....and then add the bartender into the pot. Only on Marco can men who are in foreclosure and bankruptcy be allowed to spend our money for us. Sick!
An EXCELLENT letter Ms. Lamos, I commend you.
For the ignorant socialists:

You are not worth the time for me to write a studied response. You are dillusional and misinformed. As usual, you make false assumptions as well. You live in your false world.
November 3rd cannot come soon enough for me.
This gentleman has clearly been deceived by his party, but he will surely see the truth soon enough.
My wife's premium just increased by 30% and I am about to lose my Medicare Advantage policy.
How can any intelligent citizen believe that we can increase benefits dramatically and insure millions of new citizens (hopefully) and DEMAND that costs not increase? How? How do we cover the cost of allowing 26 year old "children" to be included in their parent's policies? How do we allow citizens to purchase a policy AFTER they become terribly ill? (I would prefer to purchase car insurance AFTER I have an accident. Is that next?) How do insist on NO maximum limits to coverage and not expect a far higher cost? Are we that STUPID?
The liberals ALWAYS are assured that there is NO cost to these programs...to them at least. The "rich" will pay for it. They take NO personal responsibility for ANYTHING!
I weep for THEIR children. Mine are watching out for themselves.
