Montel, I think he was a bit strong in making his point, but he was short of vile.
Here is what you are leaving out when you quote the FL authorities regarding sewers. In absence of a monitoring programs for septic systems, then sewers are preferred. Key West is a limestone island, no sand. Septic systems are designed to leach through sand to cleanse the waste water. The solid waste stays in the tank and decomposes through a bacterial process and is then pumped out. I am missing something when you and the others prefer sewers. The island has had 2 septic issues in 2 yeas, no pollution in the canals. Each home has a tank that will contain the solid waste on the individual property. That tank should be required to be pumped every 2 years at the minimum. I have mine pumped every year. The tank is made of concrete and is not at risk from tidal flow and high water.
Sewers will transport hundred of millions of gallons annually of solid and liquid waste through 100's of miles of plastic pipes that are sitting in a mix of sand and water pumped by over 100 lift stations that are subject to power failure to a treatment facility. This process is far more risky than self contained tanks on each property.
The only people that were permitted back on Sanibel early after Charlie were the people on septic. What am I missing here folks? This project is unnecessary as far as I can see. So please Montel and all of the others, let’s have the debate based on fact why you prefer sewers. I see no facts from any of you.
27, thanks for the detailed response and I will remember it. I don't agree that FL will mandate sewers. I don't agree that sewers are necessary. I do agree that all politicians lie. However, what I am referring to is the claim that Tucker made about photographic evidence about asbestos being placed on the Glon property.
I don't know if Mr. Neylon was involved in any lawsuits other than he may have believed in the cause. He would be foolish if he was involved and said he had not been. That is easily refutable. It is not about the money for me. I can afford the sewer connection; it is about the quality of sea water around us and the quality of life here. I lived in CT for 20 years with septic systems and well water. We had sixteen miles of coastline on the Long Island Sound, Madison CT. The town had a sewer avoidance policy. It worked and the beaches in the 20 years I lived there were never closed. Down the road in a town called West Haven, look it up if you like, constant beach closures due to sewer over flow.
I believe Butch Neylon when he says sewers are not necessary and dangerous. He is correct. I have had septic systems for the past 20 years on 4 different homes and never had a problem. What is a fact is when and if sewers are installed, we will see an increase in density, a constant state of construction for redevelopment and beach closures due to red tide and bacteria. Remember this blog 27.
By the way, I was referring to Joey and Marcofacts when I used the word vile. People speaking out in protest and in frustration is not vile. It may be emotional and immature at times, but protest is not vile. Ignoring the desires of the people to have a referendum on this issue is vile. The only reason that this and the past council would not let this be decided by referendum is because it would have been voted down.
27_year.../Marcofacts, Joeywalnuts, Why is it that you guys talk about vile behavior and then you display it? Joey, you are a fool to write such insulting things. If any of you were really concerned about the island you would realize that sewers are far more of a threat to this island than septic systems. I don't need anyone to tell me that, I have lived on septic systems in CT for 20 years and well water on the same property. Septic systems work more safely in coastal areas than sewers. That is a fact and it is irrefutable.
The additional reality is that sewers will allow for greater density and larger homes on a standard building lot. I don't why you folks are so wed to the idea of sewers unless you gain financially from sewer installation. Do you hate mongers have investments on the island that will benefit from sewers?
I don't recall any of the pro septic system candidates lying on any issue. What lies did they tell? I can remember a current city council member lying. Can you?
Yes avenger i do think that this is a possibility. I trust my wife, I don't trust the people that run celebrate marco or the current council. They have earned our lack of trust.
Montel and the author of this article have their head's in the toilet. It would not surprise me if the celebrate Marco crowd distributed the questions to their slate of candidates prior to the debate. I hope this did not happen. I don't want to believe they are that dishonest.
Marcofacts, I have been in the search business for a long time and many companies pick the wrong guy. 165 candidates, why not say 300 million since that is the population of the US. Do you really think that this guy did a good job here? I doubt that the search guy had 165 candidates. As to why they picked him, I am surprised. He has been mired in conflict for 2 years, misled the people of this city, been deceitful, he needs a public relations person to spin his message. I am thrilled that Naples saw him as a good candidate. We can debate this on here if you like, but it has all been said. The asbestos debacle, the sewer fees being padded with costs that are not legally allowed to be passed on to the new users, no testing to support the sewer project. The list is long and embarrassing to him and this city. Just because Naples picked him does not make him a good city manager. He was the last man standing when Marco picked him.
We are all sure that your contributions to the city, Marcofacts, are substantial and it is obvious that you have had encounters with Moss. Politicians are engaging people and Moss is a politician. I am sure he smooth and has charisma. I never met the man and have no need to. I can look at his record and decide. He needs to go and we need a change. It is that simple Marcofacts. "It's not personal, it’s only business", to steal a line from my favorite movie.
This council needs a long long long vacation. Please take off through the holidays, all of them, Christmas, Valentines Day, and St. Patrick’s Day. This way we can have intelligent people having intelligent discussions whose integrity and motivation have not been undermined by special interests. Let the new council deal with these issues.
does this guy ever deal in facts? The state has no plans to require that the island have sewers. This would happen if we were having a septic tank issue which we are not. 2 septic tank issues in 2 years. What is the real issue Farmer, do you have a property that would benefit from sewers? If you did any research you would know that sewers pollute, septic systems do not. This is just more manure for the compost pile on Farmer's funny farm. When will NDN fire you?
hysterical, this mediocre city manager spent us to the poor house and these morons can laugh. Good luck Naples, it was a nice place. Little wonder Lisa Douglass was emotional, most qualified executives don't need a public relations manager to say hello for them. Don't worry Lisa, Moss will make Naples a mess and need you too spin his misdeeds for him.
The biggest waste of taxpayers money was Moss's salary.
This is clearly a move to make the cessation of the project more costly. Joel, Moss and now the city attorney care for 2 things, the relationship that they have with this contracting firm and for the financial impact to the contractors if the project is halted. This is disgraceful.
This lift station is to be built with money we don't have earlier than it is needed, (by about 2 years), subject to cancellation terms that Joel and the increasingly more apparently dishonest Moss have accepted into contract language. This is another example of the disregard for the rights of the people in this city. The awarding of any contracts involving the STRP and the funding of capital improvements should wait for the new council. The current council and Moss are dishonest and incompetent.
She is a fine teacher, my daughter was in her class last year, Congrats Mrs. Condee.
The Tierneys
we could have Hugo Chavez and the Castro brothers here and not do much worse than what we have now.
Lets put up a memorial to "Mighty Moss" right in the middle of the Glon Property. I think it should be a giant toilet. You have got to be kidding. Is anyone really going to miss this guy?
Strike 3, your beef is with the immigration laws or lack of in the US. Teachers cannot be expected to know 2 languages fluently. I would love to see the break down of the drop out rate. Can you speak Spanish fluently? I bet not. Teaching a class is not like any other profession where you measure results on accomplishments. Almost every teacher my children have had was a dedicated passionate professional. They have to be, or how could they spend all day, 200 days a year with up to 26 kids in a class room. I would be ready for the window ledge.
Thanks Joey, that is exactly the issue. I appreciate your opinion.
Tom
Joey, do you have grandchildren or do you know children? I have 4, one in radiology school, one a senior in college and twins in Barfield. Children are the most innocent in society. You must have no idea how much goes into being an excellent teacher. They don’t get paid for the summer like most people think, they just spread the salary over 12 months. They are there at 7 am to 3 pm every day and work at home. You would never do what they do for the money they make. I apologize for the insult, but your above blog smacks of ignorance. We are losing the best and the brightest in the profession to early retirement and other careers over a few thousand dollars. We all pay Joey and you do get a benefit from it. The value of the community is increased from great schools and most of all; the end result is an educated society. That is worth paying for.
Can you imagine that Minozzi, the man that thinks coffee is polluting the canals, has gotten this bridge nonsense this far? He and the other incompetents on the city council led by Captain Bill, "Hazelwood" Moss, (Hazelwood was the captain of the Exxon Valdez), have driven this city to the edge of the financial abyss. Now he wants everyone to chip in and build a new bridge that the state is responsible for. Please Monozzi, go away and stay away!
Chicky, you abviouly went to a school that was professional babysitting, you are a fool!
Ignore "Joeywalnuts" he is a moron, he lives to blog and he is mean spirited. He certainly has not attended formal education.
On the issue of teachers, the teachers at Barfield could not be better. I have 2 children in the school and these teachers deserve more. Please send the following email to Donovan and his email address as follows;
donovast@collier.k12.fl.us
Dear Mr. Donovan: It is unacceptable to offer a one percent raise to the teachers of Collier County after two years with no pay increases. These people spend more time with our children than most parents do. They are shaping character as well as educating our children. Do the right thing and compensate them commensurate with the contribution they make to society. Tone down your rhetoric in the media and come to the table with your good faith hat on and make a fair proposal.
Tom Tierneycolumbus way
my apologies to lolala and you are correct RC, I meant Leroy.
Ignore comments from people like Lolala. I am sure he or she is some shill for the poloticians or he or she has a financial interest in seing sewers come to the rest of the island. Mr. Godfries, keep up the good fight, you are winning.
What a dumb thing to say Leroy. I suspect you were too busy with your head in the sand to attend the meeting held last night at Mackle Park reviewing the sewer as opposed to septic system debate. I suppose you are in favor of transporting hundreds of millions of gallons of raw sewage annually through hundreds of miles of plastic pipes floating in an emulsion of sand and seawater sitting under your streets, pumped to a treatment facility by over 100 lift stations, that is a smashing idea. I guess the 2 septic tank problems that Marco has had in the past two years makes this a great idea. People like Godfrey Davies are going to ensure that this island remains Paradise.
Moss, Joel and the city council are being nominated for the Harry Belafonte, Danny Glover and Sean Penn good governing award. These neighbors of ours act like they are running a third world government and they are going to see to it that we are in the same financial condition as a third world nation. Another nice job by, Joel, Moss, city council and city attorney. Enjoy democracy while you have it Naples, the winds of change are blowing in your direction. Please vote these buffoons from office.
could it be that we agree Joey?
Let’s review; the city has a new town hall, a new police station, beautiful lights on Collier Boulevard, video cameras on every stop light, a park property that we use as a dump for hazardous waste. Could it be that we spent too much of our cash reserves on things we did not need and that is why we are going broke? Nonsense, it is more important to have a swanky new office building for our city employees and a state of the art police department to fight all of the crime on the island, cameras to catch these hoodlums in action, we could not have done without street lights on collier boulevard and lord knows we need a 10 million dollar construction dump site for our friendly contractors to crush hazardous material on. All of this is much more important than safe bridges for the people to drive over. Another nice job by the city council, Ronny Joel and Bill Moss. Do you folks have any more great ideas? Please all of you take a long extended vacation.
It is called diversion. That is what is driving the conversation on bridges. The upcoming election will be decided on honesty and integrity based upon the STRP fiasco, the unnecessary spending on projects that did not have to be undertaken, the asbestos mishandling and the dictator style of management that has polluted this island. What the current council wants to do is create an atmosphere that the sky is falling and divert attention from the sewer program and the poor leadership that they are guilty of. The mission is to have the propped up candidates they have asked to run to focus on all the other issues facing the island. I agree Marco has many issues; however, the current council has no credibility or talent or skill to address those issues. They have proven that to all of us.
I agree, take a vacation and show up at your last meeting in March, wave goodbye and leave. Vote for sane responsible people that have worked hard to present the facts. Don't be fooled by the existing council member that talks of "input from the people” and the crew of people that will just continue with the same type of leadership that the Exxon Valdez had. We don't need captain Hazelwood.
Not true "No Nuts", I lived in a town for 17 years in CT with septic systems and well water. Not one beach closure in 17 years. 12 miles down I95 to West haven CT, constant beach closures all summer long do to sewer overflows. Open your mind and read about the sources of pollution to coastal waters. Some of us are actually concerned about the condition of our beaches and water. We do fear that sewers will cause problems. We have not had any issue with septic systems on Marco. Check the facts "No Nuts". You have had way too much Kool Aid served by the city council.
Educator, as you may recall, Bush was defeated by Clinton over that broken promise, "Read my lips, no new taxes". He had destroyed his credibility. Perhaps in your line of work your word means nothing. In my profession my word is better than money in the bank. I did not bring up Popoff, Farmer did. Tell him to give it a rest. I consider it important when an individual is elected on one issue, the halting of the sewer program, and then he states at his very first meeting, "I never said I would stop it" Have you been paying attention to this debate? It is more about honesty and integrity than sewers. I do appreciate your view, but you are understating the importance of honesty and integrity.
"No Nuts" you are the comfortable coward; I am always amazed that people that drink too much just assume that everyone does. You must be one of those people with a substance abuse issue. I don't go to bars. I have a life and a family and no need to be in the bars. I am sure a fool like you cannot relate to my situation.
"No Nuts", give me your email address and I will send the email to you, I still have it. I wrote to him before the election and asked him for his position on the STRP. If you had the capacity to comprehend and if you were open minded and if you were informed you would know that Popoff wrote many emails like the one I have and publicly stated that he was in favor of sewers but he would vote to halt the program to perform testing and find a fair way to pay for it. He has done none of that.
I also spoke with him on the phone after he was elected on his flip flopping. Call him and ask him. Bye the way, who is "Jacks"? When are you going to have the courage to identify who you are "No Nuts"? You seem to be content as a coward. Is that the case?
Farmer, if you want to blog you should blog and not use this forum for your broad siding attacks. Popoff promised to "Halt the STRP". That is a direct quote from an email that he sent to me. I do not read Oracle's comments the way that you do, although I would not have written about his family. Many people are angry with Popoff over him turning his back on his backers.
Further more, you have attacked many people in your worthless column. It is not ok Farmer to call people "malcontents" that have worked hard to voice opinions of opposition to the policies of the city council. By attacking four of the candidates running for office you have besmirched their good name. It is a shade of grey between what you have repeatedly done and what you are critical of. The best advice that you have received is RETIRE
I have to agree with Gator. I don't think anyone is going to drop anchor in a canal when they could do so in one of the many bays or in the Marco river where permitted. We have a noise ordinance and floating police. If a boat gets out of control and is disturbing the peace, I am sure the police will be involved. This seems like a waste of money.
He must have the read the blog on the announcement from yesterday. Is he kidding, "citizen input" have his ears been painted on for the past 2 years with thousands signing petitions of protest requesting that the people be allowed to decide the sewer issue? He cannot be serious. Maybe it is the hydrogen sulfide gas affecting his ability to recall. If I am reading the quotes in this article correctly, (I am doubting myself because I cannot believe what I am reading), is he saying I did not listen to the citizens in the past because they were mean to me and my friends and if you are nice to me if I am reelected I may consider your input? If this were not so serious it would be comedy. Some times I think Larry David is behind all of this.
Joey "No Nuts" I am at my desk every day at 8 am. By reading your last entry I would not accuse anyone of drinking if I were you. Did you read the mindless babble you posted? Still don't have the guts to tell everyone who you are do you "No Nuts"?
another incoherent blog from Joey "No Nuts"
God, I would hate to be that guy. I would say more, but it has all been said. I hope you have other plans for your Monday evenings Mr. Trotter.
I think Marco residents would be willing to kick in the difference
Most on Marco are happy to have you nice neighbors in Naples take him off our hands, if that answers your question.
hey its Joey "No Nuts" again with his lap dog loyalty to the politicians that have run Marco into the ground.
Hey Joey "NO NUTS", with 742 blog entries your mouth is pretty big.
what's the matter Joey, you don't like when people disagree with you? At least I have the guts to put my name on here. Maybe you should be Joey "NO NUTS"
Thanks for serving, But your flip flopping drives most people crazy.
Tom Tierney
Ed Foster nailed it again, Mr. Gibson, since you respond to the blogs with names on them, What MICA poll are you make reference to and can you produce it? I have been a member of MICA since 2001 and I do not remember seeing the poll you speak of.
Tom TierneyMarco Island
we need a new city attorney,he can go work for the contractor
Mr. Gibson, why not let the people decide on the issue of sewers. I never saw the pole from MICA that you refer to that most were in favor of sewers. Can you please produce it?
We should not take any recommendation from Mighty Moss
Here are the reasons why they want Moss painted in a positive light. The fact is that Minozzi, Disciullo, Tucker, Trotter and the buffoons of the past council were led around by the hand by Mighty Moss. They don't want you to know that they were an impotent council not able of original thought. Most of them have no background in city planning and were in very deep water. They let Moss and his staff pay way too much for a worn out public utility and the need to cover it up with the STRP has become an obsession. Many of the coucil have interests in businesses or family does that would benefit from increased density. The reporter on this piece should have done her homework and asked some tough questions. It was a piece to get the council’s opinion on Moss, (I am not sure why anyone cares what they think, we have Disciullo that voted for the sewers before she voted against it and then voted for it again perhaps she is related to John Kerry. Popoff that was elected on a campaign that was based upon him voting to stop the STRP then he turned his back on the people that voted for him and voted for it, Minozzi who thinks caffeine is polluting the canals, Tucker that lied to the residents of the island about asbestos.) Nice job to all of you. Soon we will be rid of you as politicians and hopefully as neighbors. You care nothing for the people that live here. Since a few of these mediocre politicians have accused people on here of being anonymous, I am Tom Tierney.
Hey Farmer, we all know you read the blogs, is this true about the lot? Are you that much of a sham? I hope you lose your shirt on that lot if it true. The money trail always leads to the truth.
