Not all kids in America are this way, but there are way too many. It starts at home with liberal parents that are too busy defending the rights of their kids to do whatever they want whenever they want.

And what have Democrats learned oh Liberal one?

That Obama can't lead? That Obama didn't change anything? I'm not absolving the Republicans of anything, but you can't blame them while Obama spends money like there is no tomorrow. The only way to fix this is to raise taxes (or at least collect all the taxes the rich are supposed to pay, including Mr. Geithner) and lower spending. There are several social programs that are on an unsustainable pace that we keep borrowing to support. You can't keep propping these up and building the debt and expect our children to pay for these.

Take off your liberal glasses and realize that Obama is also part of the problem. This country needs a leader who will stop blaming others and just get things done. The blame game he plays is politics as usual. We need someone who will stand up and say, "The buck stops here." We need a president who will unite the government and stop this partisan bull carp.

GOOD LUCK WITH THAT. I guess since you "know" Mr. Hunter you started drinking early.

It only takes a look at the type of system we have to understand why we don't have as many or want as many taxes as Europe. We are a free market economy, not a socialistic state. Face it. You hate the concept of what you see as an "elite academy" on Marco Island. I love it! I want to see more and more of them. I want to see smart young kids getting a great education so that they can help all of us move on from this freedom killing political correctness that a very misguided and vocal minority has propagated upon us for far too long.

Written on Same school, new spot – Marco Island Academy to open in former Baptist church school location:

in response to SunBum:

Perhaps one would be wise to investigate the facts prior to expressing an opinion. The fact is the AICE curriculum has 19 pages of requirements for science alone. These requirements are on schedule to be met for Biology, Biology Honors and Chemistry classes.

As for other academics . . . It is obvious that those who are decrying the academics have not done their homework. Small class sizes, two math classes (one being Liberal Arts Math), two English classes (the additional being a literature class), and an offering of various Honors classes assure a rigorous academic curriculum with a low teacher/student ratio. The fact is the school on which the Academy is basing its two math and two English classes per student has the highest math and English scores in its District and is among the highest in the state. Colleges will definitely see this academic emphasis as a solid foundation of learning.

Having attended a private school with an average of 13 students per class, I can attest to the incredible education one gets when the class size affords an opportunity for the teacher to go over every single problem done by every single student every single day. Class size is undeniably a determining factor in education.

Perhaps an equally important plus for the Academy's students is the 8:30 start time. Research consistantly validates teens who are allowed to sleep later perform better in school.

And for families . . . The closer the school is to a community, the greater the family's involvement. Parents will be able to attend a teacher conference before school or at lunch time and a soccer game after work when it is 5 minutes away.

If you believe that the AICE curriculum which allows students to earn 45 college credits prior to HS graduation when fully implemented, offering two English and two math classes per student, class sizes of around 15-20 students, an extra two hours of sleep per night and a school within 5 minutes of home/work is not providing a solid foundation for learning then that is your opinion. To say it is a disservice however is a gross overstatement for there are inarguably students who will excel at the MI Academy.

If you have children you have a choice. That is the benefit of the MI Academy. If you do not have children you need to allow those who do an opportunity to make their own decision regarding their own children without misguided and demeaning judgements. We are, afterall, all doing the best we can for our children.

In case you cannot tell, I would never presume to tell you what is best for your child. Consequently, I truly resent being told I am doing my child a disservice when I have done my homework and know better.

Class size is nice, but it depends on who is leading the class. If you have all the opportunity to talk to a teacher who isn't very good, what does it matter?

This is very simple. You were told that if you are late, you won't be let in. They gave you an extra 15 minutes and you couldn't even be there by then. Why should one feel sorry for someone who can't follow the rules?

No, its more like teaching the responsibility and that there are consequences for their actions. If you can't follow the rules, then you must live with the consequences. It is actually pretty easy, millions of people are able to follow the rules every day. Why does society think they can not follow the rules and still get what they want?

I wasn't here at the time, but from what I have been told circumstances were much different. Manatee had a principal that didn't believe in honors classes. There were limitations that the school had, whereas comparing that situation to Lely it would seem that Lely will still offer far better opportunities than Jane's school. Classes like AP, dual enrollment, and honors classes are offered at Lely already. I could understand if they weren't offered, but why waste the money building something you don't need because one woman doesn't want to send her child to an ethnically diverse school? That is what private schools are for, don't use public money for her agenda. Don't forget all the clubs and teams that Lely already has. What exactly is the trailer school offering that is better?
