Playwright part of Island Theater Company’s ‘Men Are Dogs’
“Men Are Dogs” is the Island Theater Company’s upcoming comedy written by Joseph Simonella, who will be on Marco Island for the April production; greeting the audience and talking about his play.
Simonella will be at the April 20, 22 shows.
In “Men Are Dogs” Cecelia, played by Diana Back, is a successful psychologist who, among many sessions, runs a support group for single and divorced women. She’s got troubles of her own, but it’s her ensemble of neurotic patients who provide the action when a “volunteer” role-player becomes the hapless victim of their not-inconsiderable ire. Back was recently seen in “Second Time Around” at the Marco Players.
The cast also includes Rose, played by veteran Judy Daye. Rose is Cecelia’s fun loving wisecracking ‘live in’ mom who offers her daughter unsolicited dating advice. Daye just completed a comic routine in the “Singin’ Broadway.”
Ray Kane plays the substitute postal delivery man who strikes up a relationship with Cecelia. Kane was last seen on Marco as the priest in “Queen of Bingo.”
Tony is a divorced, pompous, part time actor who is hired by Cecelia to assist with her ‘role playing’ in group; and will be played by John Moulton. Moulton was last seen as the dastardly Bart Black in last season’s western musical “Saga of Roaring Gulch.”
Abby Yetter plays Allison, a hairdresser and the latest addition to Cecelia’s group. She was recently seen in “Singin’ Broadway” where she wowed the audience performing her two favorite show tunes from “Phantom of the Opera” and “Les Miserables.”
Madeline, played by Carol Clark, is a comically dark, angry woman who has been burned way too many times. Carol was last seen on Marco in ITC’s “A Bad Year for Tomatoes” and more recently in the Studio Players production of “The Lyons.”
Maria Tobin plays Jane, who is a bit of a rather “dim light bulb” and often the meaning of events are lost on her. Tobin returns to the stage after her 20 year hiatus.
Loretta, played by Monica Sooy, is the “wild child” who adds plenty of spark to the group. Sooy is returning to the stage after her 1992 starring role in Neil Simon’s “Rumors.”
“Men Are Dogs” is directed by local actor and director Ann Megna. Megna has been involved in Community Theater for 56 years. She directed “39 Steps” for the Marco Players and was last seen on stage in ITC's production of “Arsenic and Old Lace” as Teddy Roosevelt.
“Men Are Dogs” will be performed at the Rose History Auditorium, 180 S. Heathwood, Marco Island. Dates and times are March 16-20 and April 19-23. Show times are at 7:30 with the matinees on March 19 and April 23 at 2:30.
Tickets are $25 and can be purchased on their website theateronmarco.com, at Centennial Bank, 615 Elkcam Circle; at the Gift Shop at the Historical Museum; 180 S Heathwood, by calling 239-394-0080, or at the door a half hour prior to the show.
