‘Watts for Dinner’: The great chicken adventure of 2019
So, Popeyes in Golden Gate had been open for nearly a week when I decided it was “safe” to go. It opened Aug. 19 to long lines. Even an article in the Naples Daily News, identifying everyone’s desperation at not being able to find the new chicken sandwich deterred me (not just at the Golden Gate Popeyes, but any Popeyes).
But on this Saturday, there was still a long line of cars. It was that typically safe time between lunch and dinner. But cars were blocking one land of traffic, waiting to enter the parking lot, and there was a visible line at the register in the standing-room-only dining room.
Still in the mood for quality chicken, we decided to go to the Kentucky Fried Chicken instead. Apparently, so did a lot of other people. It was nearly full with only a couple of tables available.
We picked the chicken tenders bucket with mashed potatoes and gravy, cole slaw and biscuits. The tenders are somewhere between the original recipe fried chicken and the extra crispy. But no bones about it, pun intended, it scratched that chicken itch.
The mashed potatoes and gravy were also a decadent delight. The cole slaw is some of the best in the fast-food world and the biscuits were fluffy and amazing.
Someday soon I hope to sample the Disney World of chicken that is Popeye’s – especially that much ballyhooed chicken sandwich. In the meantime, it’s you and me Colonel Sanders.
