Considering that tropical birds are one of Marco Island's great wildlife attractions, it's not surprising they are the subject of many an artist.

The Marco Island Center for the Arts and the Marco Island Foundation for the Arts have been working to create a unique event called "Art - Not for the Birds."

It's a one-off opportunity scheduled for Cozumel at Cape Marco on Sunday, March 8 at 5 p.m., at which bird paintings created by 14 local artists will be auctioned off.

The paintings are on view at businesses all over the island prior to the auction - Centennial Bank, the Chamber of Commerce, Coiffures International, Fifth Third Bank, First Florida Integrity Bank, the Hilton, Iberia Bank, Keller Williams Realty and Mutual of Omaha Bank.

Participating artists include Carolyn Burger, Linda Chambers, Judy Chinski, Diane Reed Eiler, Hannah Ineson, Inez Hudson, Bill Moseley, Betty Newman, Tara O'Neill, Jo-ann Sanborn, Joan Scherer, Karen Swanker, Linda Taffe, and Malenda Trick.

An extra is a silent auction of 15 hand-painted decorative mailbox brackets featuring pelicans and egrets. They're good on walls as well as on mailbox posts.

Guests will enjoy the colorful ambience including cocktails, cuisine prepared by Michele Belmonte, caterer, and music by Tom Porter, the Cello Man.

For tickets call 394-4221 or go online at www.marcoislandart.org. Tickets can also be purchased at the Marco Island Center for the Arts, 1010 Winterberry Drive.
