State Attorney reduces man’s charges
In late August, the Marco Island Police Department made an arrest on San Marco Road that began with a simple speeding ticket and eventually escalated into an arrest for falsifying one’s identity to a law enforcement officer.
As part of that arrest, Marco Police discovered 12 bags of cocaine in the vehicle, and a handgun. The man in question identified himself as Luis Rodriguez, but upon questioning and a check of his fingerprints, he was identified as Mario Munez, a formerly convicted felon.
The man was then charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
The State Attorney’s Office for the 20th Judicial Circuit has subsequently reduced the charges to that of a motor vehicle infraction and the Marco Island Sun Times is doing a follow-up investigation of the issues surrounding the dropping of the more serious charges.
