Generally speaking, the Marco vessels were of the heavier variety, but the really big cheers went up for the colorful flotilla of smaller boats from the Isles of Capri that for the first time joined forces for this weekend’s Marco boat parade.

The result was probably the most substantial parade of its kind in history.

The Capri boats, although not eligible for judging, might indeed have caused some award upsets with their accentuation of lots and lots of lights – but in the end it was the spectators who scored most with a fine spectacle of around two dozen parade boats.

A light chill - born of a persistent north-easterly breeze of the previous few days - brought out a sweater or two, but there was hardly a chop on the water.

The parade drew plenty of waterside partygoers and viewers, starting from the Marco Island Yacht Club down to the Snook Inn and then along to the Esplanade. You could estimate the progress of the parade from almost anywhere by the honks and hoots along the route.

Judging happened at the closest vantage point, the “crow’s nest” at the Snook Inn, and once volunteers Barb Dasti and Wanda Day had scrutinized the votes, the ensuing Tweets and Facebooking recorded the following:

Best in Parade - Euphoria - Capt. Mike Rushalk

Best Holiday Spirit - Grand Pelican - Capt. Peter Frazier

Most Creative - Michele's Bell - Capt. Blaine Barcic

Most Entertaining - 5 Buoys and a Gill - Capt. Joe Richards
