St. Pat’s Day parade set for Sunday
Plenty o’green is the dress code for Sunday’s 1 p.m. St. Patrick’s Day parade down Bald Eagle Drive, while a boisterous before-and-after ‘Hooley’ party will punctuate the proceedings at Veterans Community Park.
Fittingly, Irish-born Kathleen Reynolds has organized the parade and Hooley for the past 8 years, and she says she keeps doing it because: “I’m crazy.”
Take that as “crazy” about all the fun the day brings, from floats, marching bands and organizations participating in the parade, whoops of appreciation from onlookers flanking the road, and also music, food and arts and crafts at the Hooley site.
A Hooley, incidentally, is officially described as “A party; an evening of traditional music and dance; or a “strong wind or gale, as in blowing a Hooley.”
Either way, Reynolds wants to see a good turnout along the parade route, which starts at the Marco Healthcare Center and ends up at the light turning left to the park.
This year, she’s made islander Jack Patterson the parade grand marshal, with State Rep. Kathleen Passidomo joining him for the ride.
Reynolds said she chose Patterson because he is such a prolific island volunteer.
“He was one of my club’s (the Sons and Daughters of Erin) first members,” Reynolds said. “I think he’s a wonderful man and well deserved of the honor.”
At the park, Reynolds said, Irish singers Moose and Mary-Jo O’Regan will headline, while plenty of authentic corned beef sandwiches will be on sale.
“And remember, you don’t have to be Irish … “Reynolds said, praising her band of volunteers from the Knights of Columbus, San Marco Catholic Church Columbiettes and the Sons and Daughters of Erin.
