As schools wrap up this week, senior graduating members of the Marco Island Academy can look back to a good send-off.

As a build-up to the school’s official June 3 graduation, senior events committee parents treated them to a May 24 picnic at Gene Sarazen Park.

“We do a picnic for them each last day of school for seniors,” said parent Jan Lowdermilk. “It’s their last hurrah before graduation.”

Activities included plenty of games such as tug o’ war and corn hole toss, while generous donations from local grocery stores and businesses ensured nobody went hungry.

“We fed ‘em,” said Lowdermilk, adding that once the official festivities were over, the parents headed home and the seniors headed to the beach for an extension to the party.

More than three quarters of the graduating class of 54 turned out for the celebrations, and the sold-out graduation ceremony saw the largest group of seniors taking the next step in life.
