Fashion on the cheap

It's a fashion show with a difference – the shoes, clothes and accessories can often cost under $10. Not each. Total.

The Bargain Basket thrift shop on Marco stages the novelty show yearly at the United Church of Marco Island, and will do so again Feb. 19 at 11:30 a.m. Tickets are $30, after which they become $3 certificates for use in the shop. They also include a luncheon.

Proceeds benefit the missions of the UCMI, which are charities located mostly in the Naples-Marco area

Shop committee member Yvonne Hall writes that The Bargain Basket, a mission of the United Church of Marco Island, has been serving the island for 40 years.

"The Basket is the oldest thrift store on the island, opening for the first time in a former coin laundry on Collier Boulevard in January 1975," Hall says.

Activity at the Bargain Basket has consistently demanded additional floor space over the years. The present building at 750 Bald Eagle Drive provides about 5,000 square feet. Besides big items, there are display areas for clothing (men's, women's, teen's, and children), including a boutique department, plus housewares, accessories, books, audio and video, artwork, decorations and gift ware.

Badly worn or stained clothing items are bundled and shipped overseas. Excess housewares and worn accessory items are picked up for distribution in Immokalee.
