Social scene: Abe and Mary come alive
Abe and Mary Todd Lincoln were brought to life, for a short time, in the play “Honestly, Abe?” a production of the Marco Island Historical Society’s Re-enactors. Two Island thespians, Craig Greusel and Judy Daye, researched and created the original script for this play, focusing on the day of Lincoln’s assassination and then, 20 years later, when Mary looks back on her life. Few eyes stayed dry as she described that fateful night at the theater and exclaimed in grief, “I was still holding his hand … when the bullet struck the back of his head.” This year’s performance marks the fifth anniversary of the Re-enactors’ annual Presidents Day program. Work has already begun on next year’s production, and rumor has it a version of Hamilton is in the offing.
