Fun, frivolity and friendship personified as Newcomers celebrate Halloween

Jodi Pree
Special to the Eagle

Five years ago, I was announced as a new member of Newcomers of Marco Island and experienced my very first Newcomers Halloween Luncheon; where I was in awe of the club’s sense of whimsy and camaraderie. On Wednesday, October 10, 2018, I sadly experienced my last one. You see, to be a member of Newcomers of Marco Island, one must be a resident of Marco Island, Isles of Capri, or Goodland, but after five years in Newcomers; you must leave (“spin out”) and become a part of Just Friends.

This Wednesday marked the last time I would see the A&E groups parade in their themed costumes, which they secretly plan throughout the summer and ceremoniously reveal at this annual club tradition. The Hideaway Banquet Room erupted in uproarious laughter as the ladies paraded the room. This year, the ladies’ creativity was astounding, making it difficult for the judges to choose winners. The wide array costumes included: a rollercoaster, beauty contestants, butterflies, sunflowers, a surgical center, and Carmen Miranda lookalikes.

2018 Newcomers Halloween Costume winners included

  • Best A&E Costume: Sea Gals as the Rollercoaster
  • Classiest: Michele Senda as Carmen Miranda
  • Cutest: Caitlyn Robinson as Beauty Contestant “Sex on the Beach”
  • Most Creative: Jan Zilch as Beauty Contestant “Happy Hooker”
  • Honorable Mention: Jaye Spencer as nurse at the Island Girls Surgical Center
Costume winners Jaye Spencer, Michele Senda, Caitlyn Robinson and Jan Zilch.

Life is hard. Life is serious … but, oh, our girlfriends keep us young. They help us find the fun, especially when we have lost it. They remind us to keep smiling, to keep going on, and to get out there…and most importantly, they stay by our side every step of the way. Newcomers is women supporting women through friendship. If you are new to the island or are simply interested in meeting a great group of women to connect with; I strongly encourage you to attend a luncheon and meet the Newcomers.

Guests are welcome to attend the Welcome Back Luncheon and Fashion Show “Take a Walk on the Wild Side” held on November 14 at Hideaway Beach Club featuring the latest fashions from Beach Daisy, Patchington, and Tonga along with a jewelry exhibit by Kathein Jewelers of Marco. Reservations are required to attend.

Honorable mention Jaye Spencer.
