1. "Betty Ford" by Lisa McCubbin (Gallery Books, nonfiction, on sale Sept. 11)

What it’s about: This biography of the former first lady, who died in 2011 at age 93, covers her advocacy for such issues as women’s rights, breast cancer (she was a survivor) and addiction (she overcame her own addictions to alcohol and pills).

The buzz: “McCubbin writes with great tact and sensitivity in this insightful and beautifully told” biography, says Publishers Weekly.

2. "Shadow Tyrants" by Clive Cussler and Boyd Morrison (Putnam, fiction, on sale Sept. 11)

What it’s about: In the 13th book in the Oregon Files thriller series, the crew of the superweapon-laden ship the Oregon are caught in a dangerous battle between two power-hungry factions.

The buzz: The last book in the series, "Typhoon Fury," hit No. 9 on USA TODAY’s Best-Selling Books list last year.

3. "The Real Lolita" by Sarah Weinman (Ecco, nonfiction, on sale Sept. 11)

What it’s about: Investigates the real-life 1948 kidnapping of a girl named Sally Horner, and how much the case influenced "Lolita," Vladimir Nabokov’s notorious 1955 novel about a man’s obsession with a 12-year-old girl.

The buzz: “A tantalizing, entertaining true-life detective and literary story,” says Kirkus Reviews.

4. "Juror #3" by James Patterson and Nancy Allen (Little, Brown, fiction, on sale Sept. 10)

What it’s about: A young defense attorney named Ruby Bozarth in Mississippi has her first trial, a racially charged murder case.

The buzz: Patterson and series host Meredith Vieira will join USA TODAY for a #BookmarkThis Facebook Live chat about the PBS series “The Great American Read” on Sept. 11 at 1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. ET.

5. "The Winter Soldier" by Daniel Mason (Little, Brown, fiction, on sale Sept. 11)

What it’s about: A medical student who finds himself the sole doctor at a remote field hospital during World War II falls in love with the only nurse left after a typhus outbreak.

The buzz: It’s an Indie Next pick of independent booksellers. “A remarkable read,” says Grace Bogart of Copperfield’s Books in Petaluma, California.
