Duck Donuts is coming to south Fort Myers.

Wallace and Samantha Nelms, the franchisees who opened the area's first Duck Donuts at Coconut Point in Estero in January 2018, are scheduled to open a second at 6900 Daniels Parkway. The new store will be on the north side of Daniels Crossing, the Publix-anchored plaza also home to 3 Pepper Burrito Co. and Pott's Sports Cafe.

"We are in the early stages of development, but anticipate a summer 2019 opening," Duck Donuts representative Kristin Kellum said via email.

The Daniels Parkway store will be just the fourth in the state, joining locations in Boca Raton and Kissimmee, as well as Estero.

Founded in Duck, North Carolina in 2006, the chain has grown to more than 80 locations from Minnesota to California to New York. The concept revolves around fresh doughnuts fried and topped to order. Think of it like a Chipotle or Subway, but for cakey, deep-fried doughnuts instead of burritos or subs.

The Nelms, the area's franchisees, weren't always doughnut lovers, "but after tasting Duck Donuts and enjoying a hot cup of coffee with my wife and stepdaughter, I was amazed by the product and immediately began further investigating the brand,” Wallace Nelms said in a press release last year.

Duck makes its doughnuts from a vanilla-cake base. Coatings include powdered and cinnamon sugars, as well as icings made with chocolate, lemon-blueberry, maple, peanut butter, vanilla or strawberry.

Toppings range from Graham crackers and chopped peanuts to Oreos and crumbled bacon. Finishing drizzles come in hot fudge, marshmallow, salted caramel, raspberry and blackberry flavors.

The south Fort Myers shop will have 1,772 square feet of space and will be next to 3 Pepper in a unit that faces Daniels Parkway. The Estero Duck Donuts is at 23050 Via Villagio, suite 115. Visit duckdonuts.com for more.
