Bette Midler thanks those who defended her after Trump called her a 'washed up psycho'

Bette Midler is keeping things light in response to President Donald Trump's latest comments about her.

The president on Tuesday dubbed Midler, 73, a "washed up psycho" and a "sick scammer" after she apologized for sharing a fake quote attributed to Trump in the late 1990s.

Midler, a frequent and outspoken critic of President Trump, thanked those who defended her during her "personal Battle of the Bulge (with) he who must not be named" in a tweet Wednesday morning.

"Your wit and good nature really lifted my spirits; as a newly washed up psycho, I am very grateful for your thoughts and prayers," she added.

On Sunday, Midler tweeted a screenshot of a photo of a young Trump with a quote attributed to him that said: "If I were to run, I’d run as a Republican. They’re the dumbest group of voters in the country. They believe anything on Fox News. I could lie and they’d still eat it up. I bet my numbers would be terrific."

"He certainly knew his crowd," Midler tweeted. She has since deleted the post.

The quote was debunked as fake in 2015. The statement, which was attributed to a 1998 People Magazine interview, was not found in the archives. In addition, when Trump spoke about running for president in 1999, he said he would likely run as independent.

Midler on Monday apologized for sharing the fake quote and shared a link to a story fact-checking the photo.

"I apologize; this quote turns out to be a fake from way back in ‘15-16,' " she tweeted. "Don’t know how I missed it, but it sounds SO much like him that I believed it was true!"

Amid his three-day state visit to the U.K. this week, Trump responded: "Washed up psycho @BetteMidler was forced to apologize for a statement she attributed to me that turned out to be totally fabricated by her in order to make 'your great president' look really bad. She got caught, just like the Fake News Media gets caught. A sick scammer!"
