It's no secret we love a fall wedding. The slight chill in the air means the guests and the bridal party can get all dolled up without worrying about whether or not the venue is air-conditioned, and the flaming autumnal leaves create a naturally stunning backdrop for photos. Plus, who doesn’t love toasting with a spiked cider or boozy hot cocoa in lieu of rosé or Chardonnay? Not us.

No matter what detail of the celebration you're swooning over, there are plenty of reasons to love planning autumn nuptials. To ensure your fall wedding goes off without a hitch, we're here to help.

Reviewed spoke to wedding and bridal experts to get their insight on what every couple needs to know ahead of time. From bridesmaid's gifts to proper lighting and, yes, even the best kind of bar menu, here are nine things to know about planning a fall wedding.

1. Send your invitations as far in advance as possible

“Fall can be tricky when it comes to dates, as a lot of people are busy, and there are other celebrations and festivities to consider. Giving your guests extra time to book the date off will ensure you have everyone you want there.”

LovelyTemplatesCo's from Etsy is not only an affordable option but one that works for fall weddings. Including four templates, users will have their invitations, RSVPs, gift cards and details handled. Plus, they're ready to send in the fall-approved terracotta hue.

2. Incorporate the season's colors and flavors

Streamline your planning process by leaning into the season's natural colors. Not only will it be easier to find matching autumnal décor, but it’ll also blend into the overall atmosphere much more naturally. According to bestselling author and relationship expert Laura Doyle, "deep oranges, chocolate, and gold are perfect." In addition to complimentary shades like deep plums, crimson and even sage green and blush pink make for a festive mix.

Laura said the dessert table is a perfect spot to spotlight the season. A tablecloth or place card in a bold autumn hue will only amplify the "dessert table and [when you] serve [seasonal favorites like] chocolate cake, pumpkin spice cupcakes or apple pastries."

3. Outdoor space on your venue wishlist? Plan for unpredictable weather

"Fall brings with it volatile weather, so it’s important to have the best of both worlds, to adapt if necessary, and have options to make sure the wedding goes ahead as planned,” explains Kristen McKinley, founder of Weddings & Brides. Depending on where you are in the country, fall can be blazingly hot or deeply cold and having a contingency plan is crucial for either.

While you should plan to host your wedding at a venue with both an indoor and outdoor space, you should also invest in items ahead of time to make even the most unpredictable weather bearable.

A tent or extra awning can make or break your big day—especially if Mother Nature's wrath decides to interfere. This tent will keep guests covered if rain heads their way or from standing directly under the sun. Plus, having a portable air conditioner on hand could never hurt!

4. Choose your dress with care

“Women marrying in the fall usually steer clear of certain delicate dress fabrics, especially when the ceremony is outdoors or in a rustic setting,” says Los Angeles-based bridal stylist Lesley Brickman. In her experience, wrinkle-resistant and cotton fabrics are more highly sought-after. Take Reformation's Hestia Dress as an example. The cotton and polyester blend is excellent for someone who wants something light but durable, while the ribbon tie detailing offers the dainty detailing brides often desire.

5. Serve a slew of seasonal beverages

“Select a signature cocktail that plays upon childhood favorites, like a spiked cider, boozy hot chocolate or alcohol-infused latte—of course, caffeine is suggested if you're having a day wedding.” This Kahlua from Drizly is a top choice as it can pour into any hot drink; plus, you can control how much or how little goes into it.

6. Invest in outdoor items that'll keep guests cozy

It doesn't matter if your wedding is indoor or outdoors, investing in a handful of outdoor heaters is essential. "When the sun goes down, it gets cold. It [helps] that [guests] are dancing or drinking to stay warm, but for those who do not partake in either activity, a heater can be a great hangout spot, says furniture brand Kaiyo's interior designer Grace Baena.

Additionally, you could opt for cozy blankets and throws when hosting an outdoor reception. This fringed throw blanket is not only on trend with the fall season color-wise but sets the mood, too.

7. Consider cozy and practical bridesmaids' gifts

Fall is colder weather than spring or summer. It's crucial that guests and bridal parties are dressed warmly. One way to do that is by dialing in on accessories that you gift them ahead of time. As we already mentioned, blankets are a great idea, as do warm scarfs for the bride and shawls for the bridesmaids.

8 Find the right light for pictures and have a backup plan

Fall is hands-down the best season for beautiful outdoor wedding photos. However, fall can still be rainy, so it's important to have a backup plan—and no,an umbrella won't save your outdoor fall photos. As a result, it's important to have a backup plan—and the best way to do that is by investing in a backdrop like the Funnytree Fall in Love Backdrop version at Amazon.

The stunning, high-resolution print comes in three different sizes and offers two different script designs. Lightweight and easy to assemble, this five-star-rated backdrop has won over reviewers thanks to its durable material and versatility.

9. Invest in ambient lighting

The sun sets much earlier in fall, so for outdoor weddings, you'll need to invest in proper lights. String lights are the perfect solution for outdoor space since they'll instantly brighten the space. However, when it comes to indoor spaces, the same can't be said.

Most indoor venues already have ceiling lights, but we recommend staying clear of using those—and if you do, elevate them. Add fairy or twinkle lights into the set-up; they'll not only add an ambiance to the room but can adjust how bright or how dark the venue is during dances or intimate moments.
