Rotary names final Spirit Award recipient

Special to the Sun Times

The Noontime Rotary Club of Marco Island chose Douglas and Grace Herr to receive the club's final 2015 Spirit of Marco Island Award.

The Herrs were completely taken by surprise while having dinner with friends at the Hideaway Beach Club, when Al Diaz led a contingent of noontime Rotary Club members along with friends of the Herr's to make the special announcement in front of more than 100 guests.

Bill Dean, a past recipient of the Spirit of Marco Island Award, nominated the Herrs for their work over the past 18 years with the Guadeloupe Center in Naples. The Herrs have donated thousands of volunteer hours to the center and have also been major financial benefactors.

The Guadeloupe Center's mission is to break the cycle of poverty by providing educational, social and other support programs and resources.

The Center's early childhood education, after-school and tutor programs have grown from 30-40 students and four or five tutors to nearly 300 students and 170 tutors.

These three core programs provide nearly 1,100 children each year with the hope of a prosperous and productive life.

The Herrs along with previously announced winners Carole Roberts, Neil & Rebecca Snyder, Cindy Love, George Abounader and Condee Cooling & Electric will all be formally presented with their 2015 Spirit of Marco Island Award at a Gala Awards Dinner and Silent Auction to be held on Saturday, April 25, 2015 at the Bistro Soleil Restaurant located in Old Marco.

The proceeds from the event and silent auction are used to support local charities and scholarships. For more information and tickets, you may contact Al Diaz at 239-438-5285 or by email at
