Visiting rabbi to lead high holy days services
The Jewish Congregation of Marco Island will welcome Rabbi John H. Spitzer of Canton, Ohio, to lead high holy days services for the year 5776.
High holy days observance schedule: Sept. 4, Shabbat/Selichot services, 8 p.m.; Sept. 13, Erev Rosh Hashanah service, 8 p.m.; Sept. 14, Rosh Hashanah service, 10 a.m.; Sept 18, Shabbat Shuvah service, 8 p.m.; Sept. 22, Yom Kippur — Kol Nidre service, 8 p.m.; Sept. 23, Yom Kippur service, 10 a.m.; afternoon service, Yizkor Ne’Ilah, 3:30 p.m.
Following his ordination from the Hebrew Union College, in 1973, Spitzer served as an associate rabbi for Congregation Shaare Emeth in St. Louis before moving to Temple Israel in Canton in 1981, where he served for 27 years.
Spitzer has been awarded with two honorary doctoratal degrees and earned a doctor of ministry degree from the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. He served as associate professor of Jewish studies at Walsh University. His civic involvements have earned him many honors as well.
Spitzer has made some 20 trips to Israel, leading many interfaith groups and family B'nai Mitzvah trips. He and his wife, Cheri, have two sons and three grandsons.
