Annual school salute is a preamble to the Nov. 11 official ceremony

In an annual preamble to Veterans Day, plenty of emotions were evoked Friday morning as the clear voices of young students at Tommie Barfield School rang out in patriotic verse and song.

Parents teared up, teachers teared up, Principal Karey Stewart teared up … and so too did many of the two dozen vets as the young students delivered stirring monologues, performed choral readings and sang songs like Yankee Doodle, The Open Sea and finally, God Bless the USA.

The presentation was by the school’s morning musicians group along with the drum club under the direction of music teacher Lisa Braren, and also featured the Lely (High School) Jr ROTC Color Guard.

See a report and photos of this presentation as well as coverage of the Nov. 11 ceremony at Veterans Community Park in the next issue of the Sun Times, and online at marcoislandflorida.com
