» The Marco Island VFW Post is again conducting a collection of items of toiletries for homeless veterans. Items include tooth brushes and paste, body lotions, shampoos and soaps, detergent, bugs sprays, hotel soaps, face cloths, towels, body wipes, rain ponchos and small canvases and other items that make the world more comfortable for these homeless persons. All items are to be new and packages unopened. The stores hosting the collection boxes include Sunshine Ace Hardware, San Marco Drive; Snook Inn, North Bald Eagle Drive; Crazy Flamingo, Town Center Mall; Iberia Bank, Bald Eagle Drive; Mutual of Omaha Bank, San Marco Road. Also, the students of the arts class of the Marco Island Academy are decorating collection boxes with appropriate designs for the purpose. Call 289-5862 for more information.

» Tram tours at Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park on the Ghost Rider Tram, you don’t have to get your feet wet or drive your car down dusty roads to see the wonders of the park. The tram, named in honor of the famous Ghost Orchid found in the park, offers a naturalist-guided tour of the park that is home to more orchid species than any other place in the North America. Tickets for the 2 1/2 hour tour are $25 per person. The tram leaves at 10 a.m. from the ranger station at 137 Coastline Drive, Copeland, off Janes Scenic Drive. » Bob Zottola, the renowned trumpet player who performed to a sellout crowd earlier this year, returns to the Marco Island Center for the Arts on June 15 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15. He has performed with the Maynard Ferguson and Duke Ellington bands and accompanied Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Peggy Lee and Mel Torme. Hyla Crane, the center’s executive director, says Zottola is one of the most exciting entertainers the center has had. Zottola will be performing with his group, Jazz Sympatico.
