JW Marriott takes measures to protect environment
Every day, 500 million plastic straws are used in the United States. When not properly disposed of, many of these straws make their way into our oceans where they can cause harm to marine life. The 'Paradise Coast' in Southwest Florida (consisting of Naples, Marco Island and the Everglades) earns its name from the estuaries, mangroves, cypress swamps, forests and beaches that are home to dolphins, birds, black bears, manatees and other wildlife – which does not include the plastic pests that plague our oceans.
Located in this Paradise on the shores of Marco Island, JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort decided it had the 'final straw' with marine and beach pollution, and sought for a way to be a part of the solution. The resort committed to preserving their paradise by completely eliminating plastic straws throughout the property – replacing them with Ardvark Paper straws.
These straws are American made with 100 percent compostable, marine degradable, and FDA approved materials. Moving forward, they will only be given out with frozen drinks unless requested otherwise, helping to further reduce the resort’s waste. The JW Marriott Marco Island is the first beachfront Marriott to utilize the initiative and is proud to preserve and protect paradise and the beautiful beaches of Marco Island for generations to come.
