A Naples man was seriously injured and his dog was killed after they were struck by a vehicle in southern Collier County early Monday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Jeffrey Stone, 62, of Naples, was driving the vehicle when the crash occurred at 5:45 a.m. at Port Au Prince Road and Salinas Drive, according to troopers.

The man, 59, and his leashed dog were walking on the east shoulder of Port Au Prince Road when Stone’s vehicle veered left and began to travel on the wrong side of the road, according to troopers.

The left side of Stone’s sedan collided with the man and his dog. The man was transported to a hospital in serious condition while his dog died at the scene, troopers reported.

While being medically cleared, Stone was admitted to a hospital for an unrelated medical issue, troopers said.

Completion of the criminal charge will be made upon his release from the hospital, troopers reported, including driving under the influence.
