Dr. Josephine Jasper: 'I'm here to help,' as the only endocrinologist on Marco Island
For 25 years Dr. Josephine Jasper worked as an endocrinologist in New Jersey, but she always wanted to live in a warm place, so she recently packed up her bags and moved to Marco Island; however, unlike many people who come to the island to enjoy their retirement, Jasper came here to work, and she has no plans on retiring any time soon.
“I really enjoy my work and I want to continue working for many, many years,” she said, which is a trait that runs in the family; Jasper’s father, also a physician, didn’t retire until he was 83.
Jasper earned her medical degree from University of Bologna Medical School in Bologna, Italy, completed her Internal Medicine residency at the Catholic Medical Center in Jamaica, New York, and earned her Fellowship in Endocrinology and Metabolism from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Newark.
Jasper’s specialty is endocrinology, which is the branch of physiology and medicine concerned with endocrine glands and hormones. She places a particular focus on diabetes, and, according to her, she’s one of the few doctors in the area who does so.
“I’m one of the only diabetic doctors in the area,” she said, “and I’m the only endocrinologist on Marco.”
And there’s a need for one, she said; a lot of people on Marco have hormonal imbalances or other conditions that she can treat, but often times people are reluctant to leave the island to drive to Naples or even Fort Myers to see a specialist, so she’s helping fill the gap.
She also helps promote healthy lifestyles, which is important in an area where many people go to live out their golden years.
“I try to teach my patient how to eat right, maintain healthy diets and pay attention to proportions,” Jasper said. “I’ve had great success helping my patients achieve weight lose because I spend a lot of time with them focusing on lifestyle changes.”
But, as any doctor or fitness instructor will say, a proper diet is just half of the weight lose equation; exercise is equally as important.
“I really believe that once people stop exercising, they grow older,” Jasper said, “and Marco Island is such a beautiful place to walk or bike or do all sorts of exercises.”
Jasper established her own private practice in New Jersey, but when she moved to Southwest Florida she decided to join forces with Millennium Physician Group, and now alternates between its Naples and Marco Island offices.
“After 25 years of private practice, I decided to do a group setting to give me more hands-on time with the patients,” she said.
Because after all, being a doctor is all about the patients.
“I write to the primary doctors to let them know how their patients are doing after our visit (and) am also able to send to the doctors out of state…an update on the seasonal patients so that the patients have continual care and feel secure while out of their home state,” she said. “Most of the patients I take care of have chronic conditions and communicating with their gatekeeper physician keeps them healthier.
“I’m here to help,” Jasper put it simply. “Anybody who has hormonal imbalances or diabetes or just wants to feel better, I’m here.”
Jasper is a professional member of the American Medical Association, American Diabetes Association and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. Jasper was also rated Top New Jersey Doctor 2015, and America’s Best Physicians 2016.
