On your marks, get set, go! Marco Island Half Marathon on Sunday
Runners of every level are invited to participate in the Marco Island Half Marathon and 5K Walk/Run on Sunday, March 18.
In its 10th year, the Half Marathon starts at 7:30 a.m. while the 5K Walk/Run, celebrating its sixth year, starts at 7:45 a.m.
The events have grown from Collier and Lee County residents to include participants from all over the United States and Canada last year. A total of 700 runners and walkers comprised last year’s fields.
“We have seen our numbers grow through the years and feel this year’s field will be our finest yet,” ML Meade, organizer and longtime local resident, said. “We have an international feel we believe will grow as those who have competed return and our profile increases.”
The Marco Island Half Marathon, Inc. is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to bettering the community. Marco Island benefactors include the Marco Patriots, Marco Island Police Foundation, Marco Island Fire-Rescue Foundation, City of Marco Island Parks and Recreation Department, Marco Island Charter Middle School, Greater Marco Family YMCA and the Lely Road Runners.
The Marco Island Half Marathon, Inc., has distributed more than $50,000 locally through the years.
“We are proud of the impact our event has had,”Meade said. “Many loyal individuals and businesses engage with us annually. We enjoy those relationships and anticipate adding more because of the affinity our residents have for our area.”
