Electrical fire claims yacht at Riverside Marina Thursday morning

A 50-foot yacht was declared a total loss after catching fire early Thursday morning at the Riverside Marina in Marco Island.

An investigation of the fire determined that it originated from the lower cabin of the yacht and the cause was electrical in nature.

Marco Island Fire-Rescue responded to a call at 5:55 a.m. Thursday after reports of a boat fire at 1089 Bald Eagle Drive. Crews from Greater Naples and the city of Naples were also dispatched.

Crews boarded the yacht and encountered heavy smoke after reports that there may have been a person on-board. In searching the boat, no one was found.

The Marco Island Police Department also assisted in moving adjacent boats to prevent the spread of the fire.

Marco Island Fire-Rescue Chief Mike Murphy said in a prepared statement that the work of the all of first responders was able to control and extinguish the fire before it spread to any other vessels.
