Pilot dies after small plane crashed Saturday in Naples

A pilot died after a small twin engine plane crashed Saturday afternoon in Naples, the Collier County Sheriff’s Office said.

No homes were damaged, but the crash happened near a home in the 4900 block of Hawthorn Woods Way. 

The area, located east of Logan Boulevard South and just north of Golden Gate city, is surrounded by trees.  

The plane was severely damaged, said Jamie Mosbach, a spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Office.

“We cannot confirm how many occupants were in the plane,” she said.

The Sheriff’s Office was securing the scene and assisting Saturday night.

Rick Austin, who lives a few houses down and across the street from the crash, was home when the plane hit. 

He said he didn't hear the crash but is used to hearing planes fly by his home.
