A New Jersey motorcyclist died Sunday when a car hit him along U.S. 41 East in Collier County, the Florida Highway Patrol reported in a news release.
Gina E. Gilberto of Naples was driving her car south on U.S. 41 East, approaching a left turn lane at Entrance Street near Treviso Bay at 8 p.m. Sunday. At the same time, Michael J. Deflippis, age 37 of Hackensack, New Jersey, was driving his motorcycle north on the U.S. 41 East inside lane, approaching Entrance Street.
Gilberto, 56, began to make a U-turn in her 2019 Volkswagen Jetta onto northbound U.S. 41, causing her to drive directly into the path of Deflippis, 37, of Hackensack. The front of his motorcycle collided with the rear of the Jetta, which came to a final rest on the east shoulder of U.S. 41, the FHP reported.
The Yamaha motorcycle came to a final rest on the inside lane of U.S. 41. Deflippis was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The investigation is ongoing, police said.
