A Naples man died Monday night along Vanderbilt Beach Road when his car jumped a concrete median and struck another car, causing a three-vehicle crash, state police say.
Gregory R. Chumbley, 71, was driving west in the left lane of Vanderbilt Beach just east of Livingston Road at about 7:20 p.m. when his vehicle left the road. Florida Highway Patrol reported early Tuesday.
His car went over the median and into the path of an eastbound car Lisa Gast, 61, of Naples was driving in the center lane, striking the front of her car. Gast suffered serious injuries.
Maximillian A. Rochford, 20, of Naples was driving his vehicle east on Vanderbilt Beach in the left lane when he then hit the back of Chumbley's car. Rochford was not injured and all drivers were wearing seat belts.
State police said alcohol was not a factor in the crash, which remains under investigtion.
The pileup temporarily created a roadblock along eastbound Vanderbilt Beach Road near the main entrance to TGM Bermuda Island Apartments, which is on the southeast corner of Vanderbilt Beach and Livingston roads.
