Academy beats Ahfachkee in 1st round of district tourney
The Marco Island Academy raced to a 23-2 first quarter lead and never looked back, dispatching of Ahfachkee 81-25 in the opening round of the district basketball tournament at the Marco gym Monday night.
The Rays got playing time for their entire roster, including players who were moved up from the junior varsity squad. With only 1:30 gone in the second half the game was played with a running clock by virtue of the academy's 35-point lead over their visitors.
"Obviously that was a team that was overmatched," head coach Roger Raymond said. "We have a big game Wednesday against Seacrest. The gym should be full for that one."
Cole Stretton and Peter Servente led the academy with 20 points each, with 12 of Servente's total coming on three-pointers. In all, 10 Rays got in the scoring column.
In Wednesday's match-up, the Rays host Seacrest for the Class 2A-District 10 championship.
The Rays won the school's first district last season. The game starts at 7 p.m.
