The Greater Marco YMCA took another toward its long-time dream to build a $1.45 million youth development center on the Y campus on Sand Hill Street. At a fundraiser, attendees pledged an additional $210,000 for the project, bringing it to within $200,000 of the overall goal.

Allyson Richards, the incoming president of the Y, was ecstatic at the outpouring of support.

"I can't tell you how overwhelming it is to see the community come together and get us so close to our goal of providing the children with such a great facility," said Richards.

Plans call for a new 5,750-square-foot building occupying land next to the existing pool. It will be highlighted by two large multi-purpose rooms and a kitchen where children can be taught about healthy eating. The building will also house age-appropriate exercise equipment, which can also be used by the Y's preschool's fitness program.

The project is designed and the plans approved by the city earlier this year while the fundraising continued and topped the $1 million mark.

"We are bursting at the seams in our present building and need to move forward with this portion of our plan to serve the young families here on Marco," said YMCA CEO Cindy Love. "Needless to say we are all excited at the prospect of being better able to service our kids and their parents."

The first portion of the Y's upgrade came with the construction of the multi-use facility known as an airnasium.

The second phase came in the upgrading of utilities serving the campus that would service the eventual expansion. This phase included the addition of fill and utilities to the north end of the campus for the expansion of the fitness center.

The third phase came in the addition of expanded parking at the north end of their campus and the associated lighting.
