ORLANDO, Florida – Under fire for traveling to Mexico while Texas was under blackouts, Sen. Ted Cruz took time Friday to joke about his troubles at a conference of conservative activists.

“I’ve got to say, Orlando is awesome!" Cruz told delegates before his speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference.

"It''s not as nice as Cancun," he added as the CPAC delegates laughed. "But it's nice."

The Texas Republican has been hearing all about his Mexico jaunt since he had to cut his trip short last week.

NBC News reported that Cruz's Senate colleagues plastered his gym locker with a printed-out picture of the Texas senator walking through the airport on his return trip from Mexico.

“Bienvenido de Nuevo, Ted!” said a message typed on the printout.

Cruz has expressed regret for traveling to Mexico while winter storms triggered blackouts that left some 4 million Texas without electrical power.

"It was obviously a mistake."
