In the race for District 1, Rick LoCastro, a retired Air Force colonel, beat out fellow Republicans William Douglass, a former Greater Naples Fire Rescue District lieutenant, and Mark Batchelor, who recently retired from a job as a community association manager. LoCastro, 54, is now set to face Democrat and businessman John Jenkins on Nov. 3. Read story »
Commissioner Bill McDaniel, who won the District 5 seat in 2016, defeated primary challenger Mike Petscher, a community association manager, in the Republican primary. McDaniel, 59, now faces Raymond Christopher, who switched from running as a Republican to no party affiliation, and Democrat David Turrubiartez Jr. in the general election Nov. 3. Read story »
Abe Skinner defeated opponent R.C. "Rick" Lussy in a rematch of their 2016 clash to lead the Collier County Property Appraiser's office. In the night's widest margin in a Collier candidates race, Skinner received 58,488 votes, or 78.7%, compared to Lussy, who received 15,813 votes, or 21.3%. Read story »
Incumbent Crystal Kinzel will continue to head the Collier County Clerk of Court’s office after defeating her former subordinate in Tuesday’s election. Kinzel defeated her office’s former senior legal counsel and fellow Republican Jim Molenaar by a margin of 58.6% to 41.4%, garnering 42,535 votes compared to 30,081 for Molenaar. Read story »
Collier County voters went to the polls Tuesday and decided the school district will have flexibility in its capital and operations funds. About 79.3% of voters, or 57,276 votes, cast their ballots in support of the referendum while 20.7% of voters, or 14,979 votes, filed against it, according to unofficial election results. The majority of Marco Island residents voted yes Tuesday to prohibit the cultivation, manufacturing, warehousing, distribution and sale of recreational marijuana within city limits, referendum results show. The "yes" option received 4,021 votes, or 68.9%, compared to "no" which received 1,814 votes, or 31.1%. Read story »
City of Naples voters cast their ballots in favor of a referendum that will bring new ethics measures to the city. Sixty-two percent of voters, or 4,190 votes, cast their ballots in support of the referendum while 38% of voters, or 2,564 votes, cast their ballot against it, according to unofficial election results.. Cindy Banyai, an FGCU political science instructor won the Democratic primary against financial adviser David Holden with 57.77% of the vote, or 28,731 votes, which was more than any of the Republican candidates received. She will face Byron Donalds in the Nov. 3 general election. Read story »
Despite last-minute fake news dirty trickery, Byron Donalds appears to have won the Republican nomination for the US District 19 Congressional race. In the end, Donalds got 23,480 votes – 22.6%, while Eagle's 22,706 netted him 21.85%. He will face Cindy Banyai in the Nov. 3 general election. Read story »
Republican Adam Botana will face Democrat Anselm Weber in the State House District 76 race in November. Botana received 14,162 votes, or 59.5%, while his opponent, lawyer Jason Maughan, received 9,641 votes, or 40.50%, of the total 23,803 votes cast. Read story »
Republican Mike Giallombardo will face Democrat Joshua Lopez in the state House District 77 race in November. Mike Giallombardo, a chief warrant officer in the National Guard, collected 11,506 votes, or 54.35%, while his opponent, Bryan Blackwell, received 9,664 votes, or 45.65%, of the 21,170 total votes. Jenna Persons won the Republican primary for Florida's District 78 House seat. Persons, 37, received 11,493 votes, or 59% of the 19,449 votes cast. Roger Lolly, a 42-year-old businessman and nonprofit leader, received 5,122 votes, or 26%. Charlie Lynch, a 60-year-old healthcare consultant, received 2,834 votes, or about 15%. Read story »
Naples businesswoman Lauren Melo won the Republican primary against two opponents for state House District 80, which represents eastern Collier County and all of Hendry County. Melo received 10,082 votes, or 58.2% of the ballots cast. Read story »
Democrat Maureen Porras will face off against the Republican David Borrero to fill a seat for House District 105 vacated by Republican Rep. Ana Maria Rodriguez after her push for a Senate run. Read story »
