Marco Islanders were prominent as the Lely girls track team dominated the field in the 51st Annual Eagle Invitational at Naples High School.
Islanders Lauren Hanscom, Taylor Fetzer and Christy Thorstensen, the team's co-captains, and sophomore Rosie Poling were all keys to the Trojans incredible 110 point performance.
The second place team, Barron Collier, finished with 66.5 points.
The Eagle Invitation is unique in that most of the events are relays. In one of the individual events, the pole vault, it was Hanscom who came away the winner with a vault of 8 feet.
Hanscom was also the anchor of the Trojans sprint medley-winning team and a member of the runner-up 4 x 400 relay team with Fetzer and Thorstensen.
The Trojan girls have won four of the past five Eagle Invitationals, which showcases 20-25 teams annually. The Lely girls won in 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2015. In 2013 they were runners-up.
Hanscom, Fetzer and Thorstensen have been state finalists all three years of their high school careers and hope to cap their careers with another trip to the state finals this year.
Poling was a state finalist as a freshman last year.
On the boys' side, islanders Gage Wheeler and Dalton Herrity helped the Trojans to a third place finish, just a half point behind second place Fort Myers. Naples won the boys' competition. Wheeler, the district cross country champion, is one of the top distance runners in the area.
