The City of Marco Island Adult Softball league concluded its 2016-17 season Thursday with the tournament championship.

The game featured the regular season champion, Islander Pool & Patio, against the last year’s defending champion Island Pizza.

Island Pizza took the early lead in the first with three quick runs, only to see the Pool Guys come back with eight of their own.

Island Pizza added nine in the second and was able to hold Islander Pool to three after two innings with a score of 12 to 11.

In the third inning, after not being able to add any runs in their at bat, Islander Pool scored 16 runs due to some impressive hitting and six uncharacteristic costly errors by Island Pizza.

After the third, the score was now 27 to 12 with the pool guys firmly in control. Uneventful fourth and fifth innings followed by a seven run sixth left the Island Pizza behind 40 to 14 heading into their last at bat.

The defending champs dint give up and added 10 runs but that would not be enough to catch the Islander Pool and the game ended by a final score of 40 to 24.

Congratulations to Islander Pool & Patio being the first team to beat Island Pizza for both the regular season and tournament championship in the last four years; they completed the season with a record of 15-2.

The City of Marco Island Parks & Recreation Department would like to thank the sponsors of this year adult softball season; Islander Pool & Patio, Island Pizza, Florida Boat Sales, Kretch’s, Nacho Mama’s and Joeys and all the players who participated.

Look for the City Co-Ed league to start up Thursday, April 13, at Winterberry Field.
