Local teams, runners advance to Class A and 2A cross country state meets

Evangelical Christian’s Ava Povich runs to a third-place finish on Friday morning in the Class 1A, Region 3 girls cross country meet at Holloway Park in Lakeland.

The SFCA boys cross country team qualified for next week's state meet by placing third overall in the Class A-Region 3 meet Friday morning in Lakeland with 86 points, following champ Seffner Christian (23) and second-place Indian Rocks (77).

Andrew Duda (17:29.80) took ninth and Hayden Tank (17:42.88) 10th to pace the King's to advance to next week's state meet. SFCA's top runner Ethan Tank placed 18th overall in 18:03 and Joe Wolters 20th in 18:11.03.

Canterbury's Charles Meagher advanced as an individual to the state meet by placing 12th in 17:45.38.

Donahue Academy, led by Leonardo Borjon (23rd, 18:24.22), took eighth with 202 points and First Baptist ninth with 209. Marco Island Academy was 12th with 272 as Johnathan Watt (18:25.23) and Tony Castillo (18:27.22) placed 24th and 25th, respectively.

Community School of Naples' Chase Lupo placed 27th in 18:32.51 and First Baptist's Calvin O'Dell 30th in 18:45.49.

Canterbury’s Jessica Edwards runs to a second-place finish on Friday morning in the Class 1A, Region 3 girls cross country meet at Holloway Park in Lakeland.

For the girls, three locals packed it up at the top with Canterbury's Jessica Edward placing second overall in 19:49.72, ECS' Ava Povich third in 19:55.48 and First Baptist's Katie Beam fourth in 20:34.17. Also cracking the top 15 were SFCA's Ella Flynn (8th, 21:05.53), Abigail Green (10th, 21:15.55) and Community School's Grace O'Malley (15th, 21:35.93).

As far as the team scores, Canterbury took fourth to advance to state with 118 points as Hayden Brands (21:43.45) and Gabriella Santucci came in 17th and 18th, respectively. SFCA placed sixth with 143 points and CSN and Donahue both finished with 183. 

Naples First Baptist’s Katie Beam finishes fourt on Friday morning in the Class 1A, Region 3 cross country meet at Holloway Park in Lakeland.

Class 2A, Region 3

The Bishop Verot girls advanced to the state meet with a second-place finish at the Region 2A-3 meet on Friday morning at the Boy Scout Reservation in Brooksville. The Vikings recorded 81 points, behind McKeel Academy's 68.

Julia Reitz led the way for the Vikings by taking fifth in 20:41.40. Teammate Kylie Thomas finished 16th in 21:47, Lauren Mills took 20th in 22:06.50 and McKinley Parker 22nd in 22:11.70. Oasis's Jenna Rosado placed 27th in 22:20.40 as the Sharks took 10th as a team.

Bishop Verot runner Cooper Banks placed 10th in the boys race to advance to the state meet with a time of 17:20.90. Vikings teammate John Mertz placed 18th in 17:54.30. The LaBelle boys placed sixth as a team led by Jose Salgado (23rd, 18:13.90) and Brayan Beltran-Reyes (25th, 18:14.40).
