District volleyball roundup: Fort Myers tops Riverdale, FBA beats Seacrest in semifinals
Following last week’s hard-fought four-set win over rival Riverdale, Fort Myers volleyball coach Stephanie Martin admitted her team didn’t play its best match.
The Green Wave got another crack at the Raiders on Tuesday with much more at stake – namely a spot in the regional playoffs.
Fort Myers got off to an outstanding start and never looked back in a 25-8, 25-21, 25-23 victory in the Class 6A-District 12 semifinals. The Green Wave (15-2) host Palmetto Ridge for the title Thursday.
“We played a really good team volleyball game tonight,” Martin said. “Everybody contributed and everyone was on the same page, which was good to see.”
Sophia Tabor did a nice job setting up the offense, dishing out a team-high 25 assists while also contributing six digs and three aces.
Notre Dame commit Paris Thompson delivered 12 kills and four blocks, with Emily Stewart adding 10 kills. Reagan Rebeor tallied a team-high 19 digs for the Green Wave.
“These teams know each other really well and the girls are friends off the court,” Martin said. “But on the court, it’s a fierce rivalry.”
Palmetto Ridge 3, Lehigh 0: The Bears had no problems with the Lightning, dominating from start to finish in a 25-5, 25-8, 25-7 victory. Palmetto Ridge (7-7) faces Fort Myers in the championship match. The teams’ last meeting was in the 2018 regional quarterfinals, with the Green Wave earning a 25-14, 25-0, 25-6 win.
Gulf Coast 3, Lakewood Ranch 0: Lilly Lucas recorded a double-double with 21 kills and 12 digs in the Sharks’ 25-18, 26-24, 25-21 semifinal victory. Izzy Gentile pitched in with a team-high 37 digs, while Maddie Baker notched 10 kills and five blocks.
Gulf Coast travels to Sarasota-Riverview in the championship match Thursday.
Port Charlotte 3, Cypress Lake 0: Bella Sherrod delivered 10 kills, four digs and an ace in a losing cause for the Panthers. Emma Hayman added seven kills and two aces for the Panthers (9-3).

Barron Collier (15-0) hosts Naples for the championship Thursday.

Dylann White led the way with 10 aces and six kills, while Janna Morrissey contributed seven kills and seven digs. Hannah Boone added six kills for the Cowgirls.
LaBelle (10-9) travels to DeSoto County for the championship Thursday. The Cowgirls and Bulldogs met in a tournament last month, with LaBelle earning a 2-1 win in three highly competitive sets.
Canterbury 3, Bishop Verot 0: Addison Piatt slammed home 11 kills and notched nine digs as the Cougars advanced to the finals with a 25-20, 25-23, 25-16 win. Avery Piatt added 13 digs, nine kills and a pair of aces for Canterbury.
Rae-Lee Stefanacci contributed eight kills, five digs and two blocks for the Vikings. Malia Leonard dished out 14 assists and added five digs, while Maddy Logan had 14 assists and four digs.
The match marked the final high school matches for eight Vikings starters – Leonard, Logan, Stefanacci, Josie Bravo, Grace Gerlach, Maggie Harrel, Bella Shahriari and Tori Wentworth-Buchanan.
Canterbury (8-7) takes on Community School on Thursday for the district title.
Community School 3, St. John Neumann 0: The Seahawks punched their ticket to the district championship game with a 25-16, 25-13, 25-9 win over the Celtics. Savannah Baker delivered nine digs, seven kills and six aces for the Seahawks (19-5). Angel Jimenez tallied seven kills and three blocks.
Reese Klaas had nine assists and five service points for the Celtics, while Leah Martin delivered seven kills.
“We played them tough, but they kept the pressure on,” St. John Neumann coach Keith Edwards said. “I’m very glad we kept fighting against tough odds.”
First Baptist 3, Seacrest 0: In what likely would have been the district championship if not for the blind draw, the Lions avenged last year’s regional semifinal loss with a 27-25, 26-24, 25-20 win over the Stingrays.
Seacrest coach Jan Class lamented missed opportunities all night for his team, as the Stingrays were marred by uncharacteristic errors.
“We struggled in all skills tonight,” Class said. “FBA played better than us and worked hard all game.”
Breanah Rives led the Stingrays with 19 kills, with Aisha Keric and Keira Kruk contributing nine and eight kills, respectively.
FBA coach Marci Walker applauded “a total team effort” by the Lions.
First Baptist Academy (11-3) plays Marco Island Academy for the district title Thursday. Seacrest finishes the season at 14-6, a year after advancing to the state semifinals.
